After “Tumbbad” (2018), Indian cine-enthusiasts, especially the genre film fans, have been eagerly awaiting the next offering from the team that gave us the folklore-laced horror gem. While we still await director Rahi Anil Barve’s next, producer and Tumbbad’s lead actor, Sohum Shah, has finally produced his next, where he once again takes the mantle of the lead actor, successfully, if I might add. The oddly named thriller “Crazxy” is the directorial debut for screenwriter Girish Kohli.
Unlike “Tumbbad,” “Crazxy” lacks an innate authenticity. The beat-the-clock thriller is largely Sohum Shah’s Abhimanyu driving around the city as multiple calls derail his life, quite like the Tom Hardy starrer “Locke” (2013). Despite the similarities and the influences, “Crazxy” remains a stylistically shot striking addition to the limited list of fine genre films in India. The film takes certain outrageous leaps and has an exasperatedly cop-out twist, and yet it is undeniably enthralling from start to finish.
Crazxy (2025) Movie Synopsis and Plot Summary:
The film starts with surgeon Abhimanyu Sood (Sohum Shah) taking a leather bag full of cash to his car. As he takes his Range Rover out of the garage, a motorcyclist cuts him. Instead of apologizing, the rider shows the middle finger. Flipped, Abhimanyu chases the man down and returns the favor. It should be noted that just before this, Abhimanyu received a call from his boss, the hospital owner, ordering him to be present in the hospital in half an hour with the money. Under the circumstances, Abhimanyu’s mindless chase of the stranger highlights his egotistical nature.
As Abhimanyu continues his journey through the traffic, he receives a phone call from an unrecognized number. The apparently friendly voice confirms Abhimanyu’s identity first. Once satisfied, the man on the phone declares that he has taken Abhimanyu’s daughter, Vedika. An irritated Abhimanyu brushes the call off. Given that the day is April 1st, it is understandable why Abhimanyu assumes the call to be a prank. Still, he calls his ex-wife (Saved as ‘Ex’ in his phone).
The barbs exchanged between the former couple confirm that Abhimanyu has not had a separation that can be termed as acrimonious. It is revealed that Vedika has Down syndrome, and Abhimanyu has not been too supportive about that. In fact, the last time he was present with his ex-wife, he wished to have a ‘normal’ child. Something Vedika has heard. Abhimanyu’s ex-wife tells him that no kidnapper would have called him as he has never been the father Vedika deserved.
Nevertheless, it does appear that Vedika is kidnapped once her school confirms that she is nowhere to be found. The kidnapper calls Abhimanyu once again. This time, Abhimanyu pays attention. The kidnapper asks five crore rupees as ransom. This is the exact amount of money Abhimanyu has in the bag. The money he is supposed to bring to the hospital. As his ex-wife calls to plead for Vedika’s safety, Abhimanyu is posed with a challenging dilemma.
Crazxy (2025) Movie Ending Explained:
Why Did Abhimanyu Carry Five Crore Rupees in His Car?
To understand Abhimanyu’s dilemma, we need to know why he has the five crore rupees in the first place. It appears that a young patient has died under Abhimanyu’s watch. The surgery was unsuccessful, and the young boy died. His parents have sued the hospital and Abhimanyu for negligence. The money, five crore rupees, is Abhimanyu’s settlement money. This is the money that stops Abhimanyu from going to jail. After the kidnapper and his ex-wife, Abhimanyu’s current girlfriend places a call as well. His girlfriend, whom he calls ‘Jaan’ (‘lover’), thinks that it is the patient’s family that is doing that. So that they get the money and exact vengeance as well.
Who Was the Kidnapper?
Abhimanyu is convinced by Jaan’s reasoning and decides to go to the hospital while ignoring the kidnapper’s instructions. However, when the kidnapper calls him again, he is shown a video where Vedika is lying in her own vomit. Abhimanyu also recognizes the kidnapper’s voice. It is Prasad (Tinnu Anand), one of the older teachers of Vedika. Finally, Abhimanyu becomes scared for his daughter’s life. He turns away from the hospital, jeopardizing his career. He chooses his daughter’s life. Of course, his ex-wife’s pleading also softened his stance.
Prasad has given Abhimanyu time till sunset. Abhimanyu blasts his Range Rover across the Delhi roads to reach the location sent to him. He seems to be making good time, but fate strikes for the worst. A tyre puncture. That is the moment he gets the call from his hospital, where an emergency surgery has to be done. At the exact same time, Prasad also calls him in a panic-stricken voice to let him know that Vedika is having seizures. Just when it seems Abhimanyu will just leave his car, his patient, and his daughter and run away from all these responsibilities, he becomes steadfastly calm.
Abhimanyu changes the tire while instructing his junior over a video call to complete the surgery. All the while, he also calls to give necessary instructions to Prasad so that he can take care of Vedika. Eventually, he manages to change the tire, save his patient, and help Prasad help Vedika. As instructed, Abhimanyu leaves the money-filled bag in a tunnel and tries to leave. But his car breaks down again, this time due to a lack of fuel. Abhimanyu runs to the place Prasad has told him to be Vedika’s location. However, he is hit by a mini-truck.
Why Did Vedika Orchestrate the Kidnapping?
Severely injured and profusely bleeding, Abhimanyu drags him to the location to find a strange scene. The road is adorned with multiple bodybags placed a few feet apart. Fearing the worst, Abhimanyu unwraps the body bags one by one, hoping against hope to not find Vedika’s body. In the final body bag, he is shocked to find his old phone, fake blood bottle, fake vomit bottle, etc. He gets another call from the kidnapper. This time, it is Vedika’s voice.
Vedika tells Abhimanyu that she has orchestrated the entire kidnapping with the help of Prasad, whom she considers more of a father figure than Abhimanyu. He hurt her when he declared her to be not normal. Abhimanyu has told multiple times that he hoped to have a child who will be as clever and smart as him. By fooling Abhimanyu and sending him off on a wild-goose chase, Vedika has proven that she has the mental capacity to outwit her smart father. She wanted to show that she is not only as intelligent as him but better.
What Does the Title ‘CRAZXY’ Mean?
The title “Crazxy” seems quite odd at first. Wild things are happening the entire time in the film. But then, there is the perplexing additional ‘X.’ As Vedika appears in the climactic scene in front of her bruised and beaten father, we gradually understand what the title refers to, after all. Abhimanyu has always called his daughter ‘crazy,’ due to her down syndrome. Not only Abhimanyu, the majority of the world carries the same view about every down syndrome patient.
The film wants to take a vicarious stand through the victories of Vedika here. Down Syndrome does not make anyone ‘crazy.’ It takes tremendous willpower and mental capacity to not have the comfortable premise ‘normal’ people with zero disablity has and beat them in their game. Crazily brave? Yes. But definitely not the derogatory ‘crazy’ as most people think. The X is the cross here, representing no. For example, an X across the letter P means ‘No Parking.’ ‘Crazxy’ is NOT crazy.
