Criminal Record Episode 4 Recap:
Episode 4: Protected
Who killed Isaac Whitlow?
The 4th episode begins with a press conference that puts June (Cush Jumbo) as the central detective figure. It seems intentional, considering their department’s push toward inclusivity. June sits next to the victim’s (Isaac’s) mother and appeals to people to share any information they come across that can help with the investigation. Maureen (Zoe Wanamaker) watches the TV broadcast with Jacob (Jordan A Nash) & Leo (Stephen Campbell Moore). June finds it surprising since Maureen always hated the police for the way they mistreated her father. Maureen couldn’t stand his helplessness. So, she wonders why June still decided to join the police force.
Meanwhile, Daniel Hegarty (Peter Capaldi) starts interrogating the suspect – Jason Reeve (Francis Lovehall) related to Isaac’s shooting. He asks whether someone gave him the firearm that killed the kid. Jason reveals that Isaac wasn’t the target. He became an accidental victim during the gunfire between rival gangs. Nevertheless, he admits to having killed Isaac. Considering Jason’s confession, evidence of the relevant gun, and his criminal history, Hegarty thinks they should convict him. However, he gets June to agree with his choice of punishment – in front of the entire office.
Did Jason really kill Isaac?
A caller informs the police helpline that she witnessed Isaac’s shooting. Unlike Jason’s confession, she mentions that a white guy killed the kid. So, Hegarty needs to restart the investigation. After a series of questions, Jason accepts that the man is Turkish. So, June and Chloe (Dionne Brown) start looking for that shooter. While checking on these officers, Kim Cardwell (Shaun Dooley) worries that June might cause irreparable damage to their careers. Hegarty shuts him up and says that the issue (related to Mathis’s case) has been resolved.
Do June & Sonya find the Hayes Lane caller?
With lawyer Sonya’s (Aysha Kala) help, June manages the search for the Hayes Lane killer. Eventually, a woman notices the flyer and calls to inform about this caller. She reveals that the caller is someone named Carla. Although she doesn’t know where Carla is, she shares a photo to help. While looking for the shooter in Isaac’s case, June meets Hasad (Sia Alipour) – her usual source of information. That’s when she realizes that the cops often mistake Turkish name spellings. It leads her to suspect that the police may have questioned a different person (another man named Mustafa) than the one Errol met.
Patrick & Doris (Cathy Tyson) cross paths at the graveyard. They speak about his mother when Doris rekindles some old memories. She apologizes to him for how things turned out for him. Back at the time of Adelaide’s murder, the media portrayed Errol as a monster. Still, Doris firmly believed that Errol wouldn’t do this. However, now with some more support, she feels hopeful that Errol will be proven innocent. Nonetheless, Patrick cannot get over the picture others created of his father for him. He goes to meet Hegarty at his house and reveals that Doris has an additional lead related to Errol’s case. Hegarty keeps brainwashing Patrick to make him believe that Errol is nothing but an evil criminal.
Does June find Mustafa?
After learning the issue about Turkish names, June searched online for Mustafa, who worked in a barbershop and was from Turkey. She goes through multiple options to find one that matches the description. But unlike what she knew before, he did not move back to Istanbul. After knowing his current place of work, she goes to meet him. Mustafa deflects, worrying that their conversation will cause him more harm than good. But finally, he decides to come clean. Turns out, back when Adelaide was murdered, the police showed him a set of photos of men to choose from. Unfortunately, he couldn’t differentiate between the black faces and made a mistake by saying he met someone else.
After Errol got arrested, Mustafa saw the news and realized that it was his old friend. But it was too late for him to do anything about it. He feared that, even if he tried to change the officer’s mind and disclose that he was wrong, the far-right group officers would put him in trouble. Hearing that makes June emotional. But it also gives her more proof to confirm that Mustafa did meet Errol from a barbershop. Right after, she finds her car on fire. Hegarty tries to pin this attack on Isaac’s shooter and offers security officers outside June’s house. Soon after, she sees a video where a few men claim responsibility for this torching because of their stance against the police.
Criminal Record Episode 4 Ending Explained:
Hegarty meets wounded Jason on a hospital bed. They seemed to have tortured Jason to get the shooter’s name. On the other hand, someone from June’s office filed a complaint against her claiming she bullied them. June suspects that Hegarty is making everything happen – from torching her car, blaming black men for this ‘attack,’ and then a bullying complaint. Roy (Ian Bonar) tries to change her mind from this suspicion. He reveals that Hegarty managed to get a shooter’s name out of Jason. Besides, he warns that she should stop messing with Hegarty considering his close-knit connections in the department.
Meanwhile, Patrick shows up at Hegarty’s house and bumps into his daughter, Lisa. But Patrick and Lisa do not recognise each other in front of Hegarty. On the other hand, Chloe accepts that she filed a complaint against June, but she did not explicitly mention any bullying. She was annoyed how June got to be in the press conference for being light-skinned – thus, letting the department portray themselves as inclusive while choosing a ‘less threatening’ person. While trying to process this information, June learns something even more difficult to digest – a male officer knows that she is looking for Carla.
Who leaked information about June’s search for Carla?
June and Sonya try to figure out who may have leaked the information about their search. They think Latisha from their search group did it. So, June questions Latisha about her deal with Detective Tony Gilfoyle (Charlie Creed-Miles). Latisha admits that Gilfoyle dropped some misdemeanor charges against her and helped with some other things – in exchange for intel for multiple years. She ended up leaking information on Carla to Doris.
All this mess leads June & Hegarty to speak directly about Tony’s connection to Errol’s case. Hegarty apathetically calls the done damage ‘harmless.’ June shares this with Leo, who thinks she needs to keep pushing for truth even if she’s on sort-off house arrest. She agrees and goes to meet Sonya. Before leaving, she admits that she has ruffled some feathers and made Hegarty worried. Eventually, when she meets Sonya, they receive a call from Carla. She warns them to stop their search for her. Besides, she accepts that someone is protecting the mastermind behind the convictions.
