After nabbing the titular superwoman comic character role in the MCU’s Madame Web, Dakota Johnson will now be seen figuring out what she wants from her dating life after admitting sheโs interested in women in her upcoming film, “Am I OK?” The recently released trailer for the movie gives a glimpse of Johnson’s character grappling with her sexual identity.
Directors Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne will helm the film, which will be launched on Max. On Monday, the streaming platform announced that the dramedy feature will launch on June 6 after premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in 2022.
ย What is ‘Am I OK?’ all about?
“Am I OK?” is an upcoming comedy-drama film directed by Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne and written by Lauren Pomerantz.
ย Both Notaro and Allynne are acclaimed comedians and actresses who are also married to each other. During an interview with THR at the time of Am I OK?โs Sundance premiere, Notaro and Allyne emphasized the importance of the pair working on the film together. Moreover, Notaro said at the time, โThereโs no world where I wouldโve gone into a feature without Stephanie.โ
The duo’s upcoming film, “Am I OK?” centers on the life of 32-year-old Lucy (Dakota Johnson), who lives in Los Angeles. The film focuses on her journey of self-discovery as she realizes that all her dates with men are unsuccessful because she is a lesbian. With the help of her lifelong best friend Jane (Sonoya Mizuno), she attempts to navigate coming out and dating women in her 30s.

In the recent trailer for the film, it can be seen that Mizuno’s character says to Johnson, โYou try 20 different flavors of ice cream before you settle on a single scoop.โ To which Johnson replies, โIce cream is different than vagina.โ
Other cast members of the film include Johnson and Mizuno, Jermaine Fowler, Kiersey Clemons, Molly Gordon, June Diane Raphael, Tig Notaro, and Sean Hayes.
The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2022. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 79% of 58 critics’ reviews are positive, with an average rating of 6.9/10. The website’s consensus reads: “Anchored in an authentically relatable approach to its story of self-discovery, Am I OK? is further elevated by strong work from Dakota Johnson and Sonoya Mizuno.”
Meanwhile, in The Hollywood Reporter, critic Angie Han wrote, โIf Am I OK?โs tone occasionally tilts too far toward comedy (including in an oddly staged climactic confrontation), its laughs land far more often than not, and bring us closer to the characters by inviting us to laugh with them.โ
ย Am I OK? will premiere on Max on June 6, 2024.
