Excitement builds as the first poster and new images from David Cronenberg’s “The Shrouds” are unveiled ahead of its Cannes premiere. Fans are in for a treat as David Cronenberg’s latest feature, “The Shrouds,” is all set to mark its premiere this month at the Cannes Film Festival.

The project was first announced in May 2022, with Vincent Cassel attached to play the lead role. In September 2022, Léa Seydoux joined the cast. However, she was later replaced by Diane Kruger in April 2023. After certain amendments in the casting of the film, the final cast of “The Shrouds” includes Kruger, Cassel, Guy Pearce, and Sandrine Holt. While U.S. distribution has yet to be confirmed, French distributor Pyramide Films will release the film on September 25, 2024. on September 25, 2024, have been revealed, igniting the anticipation among fans.

The upcoming 116-minute long film “The Shrouds” is a horror film helmed by the master of the body horror genre, David Cronenberg. The story of the film revolves around 50-year-old Karsh (Vincent Cassel), who is a prominent businessman. Following the death of his wife, Karsh becomes inconsolable and invents GraveTech, a revolutionary and controversial technology that enables the living to monitor their dear departed in their shrouds. One night, multiple graves, including that of Karsh’s wife, are desecrated, leading Karsh to seek out the people responsible.

As mentioned, the film’s runtime is 116 minutes, which is just a hair longer than Cronenberg’s previous longest films, Dead Ringers and Naked Lunch, which both had runtimes of 115 minutes.

The concept of “The Shrouds” was originally set as a Netflix series, with Cronenberg writing two episodes before the streaming giant decided to scrap the plan. If not from the comfort of our homes, “The Shrouds” will be enjoyed in the theater with a crowd. Either way, the difference is just in the experience, but the entertainment is assured with the legendary filmmaker Cronenberg’s impeccable directorial vision at the helm.

Cronenberg has described “The Shrouds” as very “personal” and “autobiographical.” Given his fascination with the horror genre, it’s intriguing to speculate whether the film might be inspired by his own paranormal experiences.

Saïd Ben Saïd and Martin Katz are producing for Prospero Pictures and SBS International, with Steve Solomos as co-producer. The film also marks the reunion between cinematographer Douglas Koch and editor Christopher Donaldson, who shot and edited Crimes of the Future, respectively, and the Canadian director’s longtime composer Howard Shore.

“The Shrouds” is scheduled to be released on 25 September 2024 by Pyramide Distribution.
