The mighty Godzilla, a name synonymous with cinematic destruction and decades of pop culture dominance, has met its match (at least on the streaming charts). “Godzilla Minus One,” the latest entry in the legendary franchise, may have initially stomped its way to the top of the Netflix charts last week, dethroning the previously reigning “Atlas,” but a subterranean new challenger, the enigmatic Netflix film “Under Paris,” has risen to snatch the crown.

“Under Paris,” a captivating (and slightly terrifying) Netflix original film, has taken the coveted number one spot, pushing “Godzilla Minus One” down a notch. While “Under Paris” enjoys a respectable 71% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes (at the time of writing this article), its audience rating sits at a less impressive 38%. However, with only a few hundred user reviews in, both scores are likely to fluctuate. In contrast, the King of the Monsters himself, Godzilla Minus One, holds a near-perfect 98% rating from both critics and audiences for his past films.
Despite the critical disparity, “Under Paris” has the attention of viewers, which would definitely make Netflix happy. With its impressive debut at number one, “Under Paris” has the potential to become the next big shark-based franchise, fueled by Netflix’s global reach. This dethronement may be temporary for Godzilla, but one thing’s for sure: the battle for streaming supremacy continues.
