Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku (Season 1), Episode 12 Recap:

“Umbrella and Ink”

The episode begins with Tensen Mu Dan being impressed with Sagiri’s group as they are the first humans in a thousand years to find that place. Hoko’s head is chopped off. Yuzuriha tries to run away but Mu Dan stops her and tells them that he does not intend to kill her yet. Sagiri asks him who he is, and Hoko responds by saying that he is one of the Tensen. Senta is surprised to see Hoko alive.

Mu Dan says that Hoko will turn into a tree, and Hoko accepts his fate hoping to be invited into Horai in his soul form. Mu Dan breaks Hoko’s bubble by saying that all those beliefs were a lie to maintain order on the island. He also reveals that the island was a place to experiment on humans, and everything else is prototypes of those experiments. He further says that the humans who reach the island are used as research materials.

He says he likes to toy with humans, but high-quality humans are turned into Tan. Upon hearing this, Senta asks about the elixir of life, and Mu Dan says that there is no such thing. He informs them that humans who consume Tan turn into trees, and they achieve eternal life and not eternal youth. Sagiri starts to worry about the consequences Gabimaru faces if there is no elixir of life. Yuzuriha uses this as a chance and attacks Mu Dan. Yuzuriha puts sense into Sagiri and asks them to run to survive.

Mu Dan regenerates himself, shocking the three. He attacks Yuzuriha, but she dodges it. He realizes she can see Tao but has not learned to master it. He tells her he will show her the power of Tao. Senta comes in between them and tells Mu Dan that before he reaches Yuzuriha, he must go through him first. Sagiri wonders if Senta has feelings for Yuzuriha and, at that moment, is attacked by Mu Dan. Sagiri coughs up blood. Mu Dan starts to lecture Yuzuriha on how to use Tao by demonstrating it, but Senta attacks him.

Yuzuriha takes the opportunity and attacks Mu Dan; he commends her for her abilities but says she is yet to learn to manipulate the energy. Senta and Yuzuriha attack Mu Dan together, but it is useless. Mu Dan welcomes Yuzuriha to Horai. Sagiri asks Hoko if Tensen has any weaknesses. He tells her to attack the Tanden as our energy is believed to come from there. Sagiri attacks, but Mu Dan says she does not have a strong Tao to attack him with, and nor did the others.

Sagiri takes a deep breath, and her Tao increases manifold. She cuts his face through the eye. Mu Dan wonders if Sagiri is capable of manifesting Tao. Sagiri tells the group that she sensed an unique aura from Mu Dan, the same she sensed from Gabimaru, and she knew how to cut that Tao. Yuzuriha analyses the situation and realizes Sagiri can increase her Tao with breathing exercises. Mu Dan is excited to see what kind of Tan she will turn into or if she can kill him. They work as a team and attack Mu Dan.

Senta is worried about fighting six more of these Tensen. They decide to rest for a bit.

Senta reveals that as a child, he wanted to be an artist, but he could not as it was their family’s tradition to train under the Yamada clan. As he grew up, he closed his heart off and performed his duties. After meeting Yuzuriha, he falls for her ninjutsu and her free spirit and starts crying. Sagiri and Senta decide to find a way to save everyone on the island.

Gabimaru realizes that he can sense Tao, but he has not mastered the use of it. Fuchi reminds them that if they kill all the Tensen, they will not be able to find out about the elixir of life. Gabimaru asks Mei if she has any requests for him so he can thank her for saving his life twice. Fuchi wonders how his soft side would affect Gabimaru’s job. Gabimaru starts bleeding from his nose, and he falls to the ground.

Yuzuriha notices many flowers on the ground, and one of the buds attacks, and Senta sacrifices himself to save Yuzuriha. He immediately turns into a flower. The episode ends with them seeing a giant flower open up and seeing Mu Dan in Kishikai form. Yuzuriha says they have to fight the monster again.
