Directed by Sebastien Vanicek, the 2023 French thriller “Infested,” aka “Vermines,” is perhaps one of the most fascinating creature-driven stories in recent times. The film features a kind of spider (a certain family of Sicariidae) that outgrows its original size by 10 times when it is threatened by the presence of a predator. The idea of this evolution is so well put in this film by Vanicek that you will be left in awe. It is a highly recommended horror film, though people with arachnophobia should avoid it.

Infested (2023) Plot Summary and Movie Synopsis
The film starts with three men finding something in the desert while one of them removes the stones to see underneath. There comes a time when that man finally removes a stone and finds a hole in the ground. He calls other guys to come. Subsequently, they inject some gas from another side of the hole. A spider comes from the hole and attacks the one who finds the hole first. Later, we see more spiders, and the other two guys collect a couple of them. Then, one of them kills the man who is beaten by the spider with his blade. Soon, we are introduced to Kaleb, who comes to Ali to buy some jewelry.
Kaleb wants the best stuff, so Ali takes him to the back of his store, where he gathers all the unregistered things for sale. Kaleb sees the same spider among the other creatures in there and decides to bring it home along with the jewelry. Ali reminds Kelab that regardless of its size, the spider is poisonous, so he should be very careful about it. Kaleb finds it cute since it is very small. Moreover, he has this attachment to reptiles, arachnids, and all sorts of animals, and he likes to store them in his house to give them warmth and comfort.
How does the Spider go Free?
Kaleb returns to his place and stumbles with the kids of the community who are carrying firecrackers in their bags. Kaleb keeps the bag while rebuking them strictly and helps the cleaning lady with her stuff. Later, we meet with Kaleb’s business partner, Mathys, who is a part-time MMA fighter. He, along with Kaleb, sells Nike sneakers to the local residents. One of these shoe boxes is wet because of some pipe leak. Therefore, Kaleb tells Mathys to buy another box, and until then, he is keeping the shoe to himself so that they do not get all soaked up in water.
Later that night, Kaleb keeps the spider inside the shoe box and leaves for the party that Clauida has arranged. Claudia has taken care of Kaleb and his sister Manon after their mother died, so Kaleb is very grateful for the community. He gifts the jewelry to Claudia and when he returns to his room, he is not able to find the spider inside the shoe box. While Kaleb is away, the spider sneaks through the hole in the box and finds its way around the room.
We see that all the other insects and animals are threatened by the presence of that spider in Kaleb’s room. Humans have long lost their ability to feel the threat because we have developed a home and security systems not to worry about that. But wild creatures feel the threat way more precisely than we humans. The other wild creatures in Kaleb’s room have already understood that Kaleb has brought death and now, with the spider gone from the box, well, we prepare for the body counts.
How Does the Spider Become a Threat?
As soon as Kaleb fails to find the spider inside the shoe box, he fears it may attack anyone at any time. He searches every corner of the room and then leaves the room to sleep on the couch for the night. The following morning, Kaleb sees that his old friend Jordy has come to help Manon with her repair stuff, along with his girlfriend Lila. Mathys is also there to hang out and work with them. Later, Kaleb goes to sell the Nike sneakers to Toumani, who has ordered them before. The transaction is done, and Toumani goes to his room to try on those shoes.
When he wears the shoes, something bites him and that spider comes out from the shoe. Toumani kills the spider with the shoe, and his dog eats the dead spider. But, that’s not it, the spider has already laid millions of eggs inside the shoe and all the tiny spiders come from the shoe. Toumani tries to reach Kaleb via phone, but he does not receive it because he is busy asking Jordy and the rest to leave his room. Kaleb still doesn’t know where the spider is right now, so he asks everyone to leave his room. Later, Manon sees him covering the gap in the door from outside with some clothes.
Anyway, later, the neighbors hear Toumani’s dog barking constantly, and Toumani is not answering the door. They break the door and find Toumani lying dead on the floor. The police take over the scene, assuring everyone not to be frightened, and ask if anyone has a fever or not. They are not sure of the reason for Toumani’s death. But Jordy says that he has seen patients with drug overdoses in the hospital, and this is definitely not the case. Later, the cleaning lady finds that all the tunnels inside the building are covered with spider nests and spiders.
How does Jordy Die?
Up until now, no one is sure what is causing all the trauma and fear, but when Lila enters the bathroom, she sees something. Since the cleaning lady, without knowing how dangerous these spiders are, starts spraying insect killers at them, she is attacked by one of the spiders. However, because of the spray, the spiders start moving here and there, and some of them find their way into Kaleb’s bathroom. Lila sees one of them and screams for help. She is not very fond of spiders; actually, she fears them.
Jordy tries to grab hold of the spider but seeing how big it is, even he, who does not kill animals, decides to kill it. However, when he removes the towel under which he has killed the big one, numerous small spiders appear. They seal the bathroom door, and then Kaleb agrees that it is his fault as he has brought the one little spider. However, he has no idea how they became so big and so many. They decide to leave the building but Kaleb and Mathys go to warn other neighbors to come with them.
One by one, Kaleb and Mathys find Claudia, and others are already either dead or are affected by the spider’s bites. So, finally, when they discover Toumani’s dog (who ate the dead spider) is lying dead on the bathroom floor, and a big spider is coming out of its belly, Jordy, Kaleb, Mathys, Lila, and Manon decide to leave the building regardless of the obstructions. But the main door is covered with giant spiders. Hence, they plan to leave through the parking lot. But the alley before the parking lot is basically where the spiders are living. Fortunately, they somehow make it to the other end of the alley, but the police do not let them through as they hold the door from the other side.
They even smoke-bomb them when Kaleb and others do not comply. So, they are forced to the other side again, and after they close the door, they find that Jordy is not there with them. Kaleb opens the door and finds that Jordy is covered with spiders, and there is no chance of saving him. Jordy screams as they somehow save themselves, hiding inside a room to plan something to get out of the building anyway.

Is Kaleb and Others Able to Get Out of the Building?
After Jordy’s death, the remaining friends decide to go to the roof so that they can find some help from the neighborhood. With the help of firecrackers and light, they are able to stop the spiders for a while and end up reaching almost the top of the building. Later, Kaleb apologizes to Lila, and when she asks why Kaleb would stop talking to Jordy, he says they had a dream of opening their own zoo. But, when Jordy was beaten by an animal, there was a misunderstanding that kept them apart.
Kaleb has always thought Jordy had told the police that he was responsible, but Lila tells her that to keep Kaleb safe, Jordy lied to the police about the wound. Anyway, later, they are confronted by police, and after some fightback, they end up in custody. Kaleb sees that Mathys is already beaten by the spider, and Mathys says that he will make a way out for them as he has no hope of seeing the outside of the building.
Mathys suddenly opens the door from where previously they tried to come to the parking lot. A huge amount of giant spiders come from the door and the police start shooting at them. Lila finds a car and, along with Kaleb and Manon, comes in front of the parking door. They stop because the largest of the spiders stands in front of them. Kaleb comes out of the door, asks Lila to turn off the light of the car, and sees the spider go away without doing any harm.
Kaleb then opens the exit door, and at the end of the film, we see everyone’s picture is there who has passed away because of this traumatic event. The police fail to explain why they could not come earlier to help the tenants. Perhaps they think that all have been affected. Later, we see the whole building is demolished. The structure of the building itself looks like the ocelli of the spider and it is witnessed by another building of the same structure while the destruction takes place.
Is Kaleb Dead or Alive?
We see Kaleb’s picture as well amidst the dead ones. But, at the end of the film, we see him burying a photo of him and Jordy together in a sneaker box in the jungle. A little spider comes from the back of his jacket, and when he shows it the path to go away, the spider seems reluctant and prefers to stay on his palm. But, Kaleb has removed himself from keeping wild animals as he lets the spider go with a gesture like, that’s enough.
Since there has not been much news about this attack, the government perhaps considered that everyone in the building was dead. Even the police were reluctant to save the people of the building. It was because of them that Jordy had to die. If only they had opened the gate, then multiple lives could have been saved. Anyway, perhaps the world does not even know that three people made it out of the building that day – Kaleb, Lila, and Manon.
In a world where people’s lives are counted on the basis of whether they are affected by an unknown virus or not, it is for the best if the three of them remain dead. Because, as far as the community was concerned, no one was there to save them when they were screaming for help. So, what’s the use of it anyway?
