Until now, the second season of Invasion focused on the conflicts after the alien invasion. On her journey with the Movement, Aneesha lost Sarah to the authorities. Eventually, she realized that Sarah was being held captive at a military base. On the other hand, Nikhil’s egomania caused more harm than good. It led to several seismic events across the globe. So, Mitsuki had to mend the pieces and approach the enclosure. Meanwhile, Caspar reached out to other special kids, only to learn something peculiar about himself. Now Invasion (Season 2) Episode 9 follows Aneesha’s search for Sarah. While Caspar continues with his attempts to understand the cause of the chaos, Mitsuki has a breakthrough in her research about connections across dimensions.
Spoilers ahead.
Invasion (Season 2) Episode 9 “Breakthrough” Recap:
The Aftermath of Seismic Events
The 9th episode of Invasion follows the aftermath of the tragic, global seismic events after Nikhil takes a reckless step. President Benya Mabote (Moshidi Motshegwa) needs to look at the damage control. In the midst of the chaos, she refuses to take Maya Castillo’s (Nain González Norvind) calls. During her meeting with WDC members, She learned that the seismic events occurred in what they considered alien-free zones. So, she believes that these are epicenters and proof of the existence of alien entities. The members conclude that these aliens can cloak themselves.
Later on, the president speaks with Maya. She considers Mitsuki (Shioli Kutsuna) responsible for killing their asset – the alien entity in their facility. However, Maya stresses the fact that Mitsuki stopped the earthquakes. Meanwhile, Mitsuki tries to find a pattern in the alien activities. But the president refuses to provide details from other centers. So, Mitsuki gets frustrated. She still keeps sensing something strange and hearing some distorted voices haunt her. In between, she also hears Hinata’s voice calling out for her.
Mitsuki’s Discovery
Mitsuki walks out of the facility toward the woods. She looks at the birds and recalls how they are attuned to the earth’s magnetic field. So, she believes aliens are connected to that field. That also reminds her of what Maya said – everything is interconnected. So, she tries to ground herself and looks around to find some semblance of a clue. She hopes that finding the boy she saw in the other dimension, i.e., Caspar (Billy Barratt), can bring her closer to an answer.
Caspar’s Struggle
After the seismic events, Dr Esmee (Emeline Lambert) and Dr Gabriel (Louis Bernard) try to bring Caspar back to normal. Caspar eventually regains consciousness. He mentions that he saw a light brighter than what he saw ever before. Turns out that WDC is relying on him to learn more about the events. That’s why he plans to go back to that state so that he can find the answers. But Esmee tries to stop him from taking that dangerous step. Meanwhile, he and the other kids start hearing one other voice communicating with the aliens.
Since Caspar insists that he go back under to learn about the aliens, Jamila (India Brown) asks to join him. Monty (Paddy Holland) tries to stop her, worrying about her well-being. He consistently doubts whether the Caspar with them is the Caspar they once knew. As a result, Caspar gets deeply upset. He calls out Monty’s one-sided love for Jamila to be the reason for Monty’s anger toward him. Later, Caspar apologizes for taking out his anger in a mean spirit. Monty accepts that what Caspar said was true. But he does not want Jamila to put her life in danger. So, he asks Caspar to change her mind.
Aneesha’s Search for Sarah
Since Sarah (Tara Moayedi) went missing, Clark (Enver Gjokaj) stood firmly by Aneesha’s (Golshifteh Farahani) side. He even persuades the Movement to not leave her alone in search of her daughter. Now, she feels slightly remorseful for dragging them into it. Now that they know Sarah’s location, she hopes to rescue her. However, she understands the risks involved in the mission. So, she asks him to take care of Luke (Azhy Robertson) in case she cannot get out alive. Clark assures that she need not worry about it. He also shares his admiration for her strong will.
In the base, the scientists keep Sarah under inspection. A doctor keeps asking her for any detail she knows about the alien’s shard. Sarah says that her brother knows how to talk to it or feel things related to it. Eventually, the Movement infiltrates the base with Aneesha and Luke. Even though they manage to get inside wearing uniforms, the army gets an alert about a security breach. Meanwhile, Luke feels the shard is present somewhere nearby. So, they figure if it is there, then she is also there.
Invasion (Season 2) Episode 9 “Breakthrough” Ending Explained:
Does Aneesha and the Movement rescue Sarah?
The Movement manages to reach the place where they believe Sarah is being held captive. They break inside and look around to find some trace of her. Eventually, Aneesha and Clark stumble upon prison cells to meet Trevante (Shamier Anderson) and Rose (Nedra Marie Taylor). They inform her about a brown-haired girl, and Aneesha realizes they are talking about Sarah. Trevante promises to help them find her. So, Aneesha gets both out of the cell to lead them to the lab. Since the soldiers catch them along the way, she gives her gun to Trevante. He creates a distraction for her to go find Sarah.
Eventually, Aneesha notices Sarah being taken out of the facility by the scientists. So, she speaks in Farsi and calls her. Although Aneesha manages to get out with Sarah, the soldiers find her right outside. So, she unfortunately does not manage to rescue Sarah just then. On the other hand, Rose breaks into a room full of patients with heavy equipment. That’s where she sees her estranged partner, Billy.
What breakthrough does Mitsuki have in her research?
While Mitsuki tries to find the answers about the aliens’ communication pattern, Caspar and Jamila grapple with the thoughts of the next step they should take. She mentions how she has been making the same choice over and over – to follow him. Now, she does not want him to disappear again. She does not want to just let him go, either. But he still goes ahead with the process for the greater good. Meanwhile, Maya notices a strange signal pattern in the facility, which is considered to be the ship’s way of communicating with them.
Since Mitsuki is not there, Maya goes out in the woods to find her. By then, Mitsuki tries to understand how everything is connected. She touches a hive and finds a way to be one with them. Upon following the resulting light, she reaches another dimension. She touches on a surface to notice a figure on the other side. The voice calls out to her. It is Caspar’s. She mentions that she saw him through the portal and wonders whether he is real. He mentions he is. During their interaction, they both sense that the portals go to the mother ship. That is Mitsuki’s breakthrough discovery.
