The multi-talented star Jesse Eisenberg is all set with his upcoming project, “A Real Pain” (the trailer is out now!). It is a comedy-drama film written, directed, and produced by Eisenberg. Under the banner of Searching Pictures, the distributor recently released a new trailer for the film, providing a glimpse of what can be expected. Apart from handling the creative controls of the film, Eisenberg will also be seen leading the star cast, which also features Kieran Culkin, Will Sharpe, Jennifer Grey, Kurt Egyiawan, Liza Sadovy, and Daniel Oreskes.
What can be expected from the film?
For every movie junkie and fan of the comedy genre, the upcoming “A Real Pain” is no less than a treat. While the inclusion of Oscar-nominated actor Jesse Eisenberg in the film adds a layer of anticipation to it, the premise of the film serves as a complete package of entertainment. The film follows mismatched cousins, David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin), who reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a turn when the odd couple’s old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history.
The trailer for “A Real Pain” opens with the two cousins hiding in a train after sneaking on without tickets. It then shows their journey, including visiting monuments, having emotional talks, and even slapping each other. It’s uncertain if David and Benji will still get along by the end.
Two-time Oscar-winning actress Emma Stone is also attached to the film, as she serves as a producer under her Fruit Tree banner. Moreover, it marks Eisenberg’s second feature film as a writer and director after 2022’s “When You Finish Saving the World.” The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, 2024. Shortly after, Searchlight Pictures acquired worldwide rights to the film for $10 million in an all-night auction.
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 91% of 53 critics’ reviews are positive, with an average rating of 8/10. The website’s consensus reads: “Led by a scene-stealing turn from Kieran Culkin, A Real Pain is a powerfully funny, emotionally resonant dramedy that finds writer-director-star Jesse Eisenberg playing to his strengths on either side of the camera.”
Damon Wise of Deadline Hollywood praised Kieran Culkin’s performance, calling it a career-high. Culkin, who plays the other cousin in the film, continues to establish himself as a powerhouse in the industry after winning a Primetime Emmy Award for his work in “Succession.”
“A Real Pain” is scheduled to be released in the United States on October 18, 2024.
