Kleo’s Childhood & the Seahorse

While trying to recollect her past, Kleo meets Uwe (Vincent Redetzki), whom she thought she had killed, and Margot (Steffi Kühnert). Uwe and Margot claim they do not know where the red suitcase is. So, Kleo refuses to cooperate with them. Nikolai Zhukov (Andrej Kaminsky) from the KGB refuses to cooperate with Rose on her mission. Sven gets hold of police files on the blast caused by Min Sun. He meets Kleo to understand its specifics. Through the discussion, they realize they must find a Stasi spy on the US mission. She manages to escape the building alive with the documents. Suddenly, Sven shows up there and rescues her. Through the documents, she learns about an officer codenamed ‘Bear’ who is hiding with the red suitcase in the Moni safe house. On the other hand, Nikolai returns to Moscow and kills the chief. That murder is followed by a series of deaths of officers with links to the KGB.

Episode 3: The Bear

Kleo travels to Belgrade to meet Rade (Branko Samarovski) and talk about the Bear. He gives her the address of a safe house. Once she leaves, he informs Nikolai about it. Then, Sven arrives to assist Kleo in her further investigation. In the hotel bar, he meets Kimberley (Mai Duong Kieu) and immediately falls for her. But she leaves him on his own. Back in her room, Kleo recalls that her father didn’t die in an accident by being shot in the head on Christmas. She calls Rade for answers. But he refuses to reveal anything over a phone call. Soon after, Kleo and Sven get attacked by Rade’s daughter, Vesna.

While Kleo shoots Vesna, someone shoots Rade to death. Later, Sven woos Kimberley and sleeps with her. Kleo notices them dancing together and feels lonely. So, she calls Holger to say she wants to get back with him. Kleo rightfully suspects Kimberley is aware of the Reagan-Honecker Pact documents. She confronts Kimberley and gets into a full-blown fight with her. Kimberley claims the Ludsch comrades – who plan to establish the Soviet Republic of Germany – have the documents. They plan to make the Federal Republic and GDR a part of the Soviet Union. But she doesn’t reveal who is behind Ludsch. Moments later, Kimberley loses balance from the roof and dies.

Episode 4: Beer and Schnapps

Thilo considers Ciana his soulmate without knowing she is secretly working for the CIA to keep a watch on Kleo. So, Thilo is just a tool in her operation. Uwe and Margot meet other comrades behind the Ludsch operation to discuss their plan. While that happens, Kleo tries to intercept the details about the pact. She realizes Jutta is connected to the plan. So, she follows her to a bar and confronts her. When Kleo asks for the documents, she gets attacked by other comrades around her. Sven distracts them and helps Kleo defeat them. Then, Jutta reveals that Kleo’s grandpa, whom Kleo killed before, is behind the Ludsch plan.

Kleo returns home to find Holger. Again, she tells him to leave, fearing he will make her vulnerable. Later, she makes Ciana confess to her CIA connection. This makes Thilo feel betrayed in their relationship. Nikolai meets his mother to speak about Kleo. Sven gets thrown out of Freddy’s house. So, he spends the night on Kleo’s sofa. Jutta informs Uwe that Sven is their roadblock, which pushes Uwe to kidnap Sven to entrap Kleo. Kleo meets CIA’s Rose to cut a deal for her help. With Thilo, Kleo shows up at the kidnapping site. She tells Thilo to keep Uwe at his gunpoint. But Uwe tricks Thilo into letting him leave. He uses this time to trap Kleo in her car.

Episode 5: From Russia with Love

Uwe traps Kleo in her car. Sven escapes his trap and tries to save her. Moments later, Rose and her CIA team arrive there and arrest Uwe. However, Kleo refuses to cooperate with Rose and her capitalistic system, even if it is against the people who betrayed her. She understands it is just as evil. Once she returns home, Thilo tries to convince her of the significance of human connection. It leads her to recall a doll house that Nikolai gifted her when she was a kid. She remembers seeing Nikolai kill her father, Fabian (Ronny Miersch).

Kleo realizes her father didn’t die in a car accident but by a gunshot. So, she decides to seek revenge against Nikolai. While that happens, Uwe goes to Margot’s house. Despite his loyalty to their cause, she ridicules him, which makes him impulsively shoot her and her husband dead. Kleo arrives there to find their dead bodies, and Uwe hides. Then, Jutta arrives there and wonders who killed them. Sven confronts Jutta and discovers that Jutta is a double agent working for the CIA and the Ludsch plan. Kleo threatens to disclose her truth. In exchange, Jutta shares where Kleo’s mother, Brigitte, is currently hiding.

Kleo (Season 2) ‘Netflix’ Review:

The first season of “Kleo” was fairly eventful, filled with many political details connected to the history of Germany and Russia. Although a fictional narrative, it revolved around historical events like the destruction of the Berlin Wall. Much of the first season operated like a revenge thriller where Kleo hoped to avenge her wrongful arrest. She received help from Sven, a policeman who noticed her kill an agent in her mission. Jella Haase and Dimitrij Schaad’s impeccable comedic chemistry as Kleo & Sven made its political jargon appear breezy for casual viewers.

The second season also relies on their comedic strengths and aces it on that front. Both Haase and Schaad have great comedic timing. The humorous moments also feel neatly designed and not overt or force-fit in any situation. Besides that, the second season manages to be just as riveting as the first season, with believable twists and turns that keep us invested in Kleo’s investigation. There is rarely a false note in it as an action thriller, as it presents an invigorating blend of suspense and action.

Haase’s persona lends itself to a mix of Kleo’s tough, distant exterior and her charming, love-seeking inner self. Schaad is just as impressive as a goofy companion who tries to figure out the logistics of their relationship.
