Two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali and Academy Award nominee and “Mad Max: Fury Road” star Tom Hardy will soon share the big screen. The acclaimed actors have collaborated on the upcoming thriller “77 Blackout.” Described as a “crime thriller,” the project will be set during the New York City blackout of 1977, with the enormously talented pair finding themselves amid the chaos.

According to Deadline, the synopsis for 77 Blackout reads:

“In 1977, five rogue police officers formulate a plan to rob three criminal strongholds – the Hong Kong Triads, the Italian Mafia, and the Harlem Mob – all in one night. When a blackout sweeps the city the night of the robbery, the crew is forced to navigate a hellish landscape as years of being overworked and underpaid forces each of them to confront their own morality.”

The film is set to be directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, whose notable filmmaking credits include the James Bond outing “No Time to Die,” “Beasts of No Nation,” “Jane Eyre,” “True Detective,” “Maniac,” and “Masters of the Air.” While Fukunaga is undeniably an incredible filmmaker, the news about him helming “77 Blackout” is controversial, as several sources recently accused him of misconduct.

Written by Frank John Hughes,” 77 Blackout” will be introduced by Black Bear at the Cannes market. International distribution rights are up for grabs. Additionally, WME will handle the movie in the United States.

The most exciting element of 77 Blackout is Mahershala Ali and Tom Hardy

Both Mahershala Ali and Tom Hardy are the two names in the Hollywood industry who are masters of their craft. Ali is the recipient of an Oscar Award in the Best Actor category, which he won twice, first for his performance in “Moonlight” and later for “Green Book.” Apart from “77 Blackout,” the actor is also set to star in the MCU as “Blade” in the upcoming reboot. The filming of “Blade” has now been given a filming schedule for Fall 2024, setting it up for a release date of November 7, 2025.

As for Tom Hardy, the actor needs no introduction. He is best known for his performance in movies like Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Mad Max: Fury Road, and of course, how can we not mention the Venom franchise that has made him one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood? Other projects he has been attached to include the Jeff Nichols-directed film The Bikeriders.
