After beautifully bringing the Mattel doll Barbie to life and winning millions of hearts, actress Margot Robbie is ready with her new project. Previously, Robbie starred in and produced Greta Gerwig’s directorial movie Barbie. It was a mega-blockbuster and became the highest-grossing movie of 2023. Now, the multi-hyphenate artist will produce a live-action movie based on the board game Monopoly. Margot Robbie’s company LuckyChap will produce the film for Lionsgate in conjunction with toymaker Hasbro.
What Is Monopoly?
Monopoly is derived from The Landlord’s Game, created in 1903 in the US by Lizzie Magie, as a way to demonstrate that an economy rewarding individuals is better than one where monopolies hold all the wealth. It also served to promote the economic theories of Henry George—in particular, his ideas about taxation.
When Parker Brothers first published Monopoly in 1935, the game became a huge success at the height of the Great Depression. Monopoly players travel in circles around a board patterned after Atlantic City, New Jersey, buying properties, building structures, and charging rent as they try to avoid going to jail or going bankrupt. Parker Brothers was eventually absorbed into Hasbro in 1991. Hasbro has produced several special editions of Monopoly over the years, tying into everything from Looney Tunes to Game of Thrones.
Monopoly will mark Hasbro’s latest venture into film production. In addition to their ongoing Transformers franchise, which will continue with the animated prequel Transformers One later this year, last year also saw the release of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, based on the venerable role-playing game they acquired along with its parent company, Wizards of the Coast, in 1999.
As of its upcoming project, Margot Robbie will produce a live-action Monopoly movie for Lionsgate.
Margot Robbie: A strategic producer
Margot Robbie is a renowned actress. She recently gave an impeccable performance in the 2023 film Barbie. While fans widely recognize Robbie for her films, they are barely aware of her other ventures. Robbie and her husband, filmmaker Tom Ackerley, are the co-founders of the production company LuckyChap. Under their production banner, they have produced several films, including I, Tonya, Promising Young Woman (2020), Barbie, and Saltburn (2023), as well as the Hulu series Dollface (2019–2022) and the Netflix miniseries Maid (2021).
The films made under their production banner have been mostly successful, and now, when Robbie has decided to produce Monopoly, her decision cannot be doubted.
As of now, no release date has been set for Monopoly.
