Meryl Streep is the recipient of top honors like the Oscars and Golden Globe Awards. Now’s the time for Meryl Streep to receive an honorary Palme d’Or at the opening ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival on May 14.
She previously earned the Best Actress award at Cannes in 1989 for her performance in Fred Schepsi’s “Evil Angels.” Now, she will open the 77th Cannes Film Festival at the Grand Theatre Lumiere. Expressing her gratitude, Streep said in a statement, “I am immeasurably honored to receive the news of this prestigious award. To win a prize at Cannes, for the international community of artists, has always represented the highest achievement in the art of filmmaking. To stand in the shadow of those who have previously been honored is humbling and thrilling in equal part. I so look forward to coming to France to thank everyone in person this May!”
Meanwhile, acknowledging Streep’s glory and legacy in Hollywood, Cannes festival heads Iris Knobloch and Thierry Frémaux said in a joint statement: “We all have something in us of Meryl Streep! We all have something in us of Kramer vs. Kramer, Sophie’s Choice, Out of Africa, The Bridges of Madison County, The Devil Wears Prada, and Mamma Mia! Because she has spanned almost 50 years of cinema and embodied countless masterpieces, Meryl Streep is part of our collective imagination, our shared love of cinema.”
A Tribute to Meryl Streep’s Hollywood Journey
Meryl Streep is an acclaimed Hollywood actress, who certainly needs no introduction. It has been over five decades since the actress has entertained the audience with her impeccable performances. She is known for her versatility and accent adaptability, and has been described as “the best actress of her generation”.
Streep made her stage debut in 1975 in Trelawny of the Wells and received a Tony Award nomination the following year for a double-bill production of 27 Wagons Full of Cotton and A Memory of Two Mondays. In 1977, she made her feature film debut in Julia. She won her first Primetime Emmy Award in 1978 for the miniseries Holocaust and received her first Oscar nomination for The Deer Hunter that same year. Meryl Streep won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for playing a troubled wife in Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), followed by the Academy Award for Best Actress for starring as a Holocaust survivor in Sophie’s Choice (1982). She continued to gain awards and critical acclaim for her film work throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
Streep has been the recipient of many honorary awards, including the AFI Life Achievement Award in 2004, a Gala Tribute from the Film Society of Lincoln Center in 2008, and the Kennedy Center Honor in 2011 for her contribution to American culture through performing arts. President Barack Obama awarded her the National Medal of Arts in 2010 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014. She was awarded the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2017. Additionally, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1998.
