To fans’ astonishment, renowned filmmaker Michael Mann will soon be helming the sequel of one of the best films to date, Heat. The acclaimed crime thriller will soon be getting a sequel after almost three decades. Recently during a conversation, Michael Mann revealed that Heat 2 will be his next project, with the project acting as both a prequel and a sequel to the 1995 classic.
All about the upcoming Michael Mann’s next project, Heat 2
During an interview with Radio France, Michael Mann confirmed that the prequel/sequel of Heat is “definitely” his next project. Well, this sounds like a promise. Mann also revealed that he is now in pre-production on the Heat follow-up, which will be based on the 2022 novel Heat 2 penned by Mann and Meg Gardiner.
The official synopsis of the novel reads:
“This new story leads up to the events of the film and then moves beyond it, featuring new characters on both sides of the law, new high-line heists, and breathtakingly cinematic action sequences. Ranging from the streets of L.A. to the inner sancta of rival Taiwanese crime syndicates in Paraguay to a massive drug cartel money-laundering operation just over the border in Mexico, HEAT 2 illuminates the dangerous workings of international crime organizations and the agents who pursue them as it provides a full-blooded portrait of the men and women who inhabit both worlds.”
The OG 1995 crime drama film Heat is today considered one of the exemplary movies of the genre. The film, which features iconic actors like Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, follows the conflict between an LAPD detective (played by Pacino) and a career criminal (played by De Niro) while also depicting its effect on their professional relationships and personal lives.
And now the prequel/sequel, Heat 2, covers the formative years of homicide detective Vincent Hanna and elite criminals Neil McCauley, Chris Shiherlis, and Nate, played in the first movie by Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer, and Jon Voight, respectively.
No details have been disclosed regarding the new cast of Heat 2. However, ongoing rumors suggest that Adam Driver will be in the upcoming film. Mann himself has also addressed this rumor. Previously, the filmmaker confirmed the conversation between him and Driver regarding the role of Neil McCauley, the master thief played by De Niro in the 1995 film.
He said, “Adam and I talked about it extensively from before the strike began when we were still shooting Ferrari.”
Additionally, swirling rumors suggest that the lead character of LAPD cop Vincent Hanna, who was previously played by Al Pacino, could be portrayed by Dune star Timothée Chalamet. Chalamet’s Dune 2 co-star Austin Butler may also be seen joining the speculated team in the role of Chris Shiherlis, played in the first Heat by Val Kilmer.
While we all highly anticipate the upcoming Heat 2, it’s thrilling for all fans to know that the sequel is around the corner.
