Netflix is set to release the sequel to the 2024 anime film Mononoke: The Phantom in the Rain, titled Mononoke the Movie: The Ashes of Rage, later in 2025. This film continues the story of the enigmatic Medicine Seller as he confronts new supernatural challenges within the imperial palace.

A Glimpse into the Sequel

In The Ashes of Rage, the Medicine Seller returns to the inner chambers of Ōoku, where the aftermath of previous events has disrupted the balance of power. The new director, Otomo Botan, enforces a strict regime, leading to tensions with Fuki, a seasoned courtesan. As mysterious incidents of spontaneous human combustion occur, the Medicine Seller suspects the presence of a mononoke—a vengeful spirit born from intense human emotions. His investigation reveals the involvement of the Fire Rat’s children, who are searching for their mother and targeting those who threaten newborns. To exorcise the mononoke, the Medicine Seller must uncover its “Shape,” “Truth,” and “Reason.”
