The spooky season is upon us earlier this year with two clowns dominating the cinema halls for better or worse. While “Joker 2” is being criticized left, right, and center, an Indie slasher like “Terrifier 3″ has been getting love from critics and audiences alike. Besides these English-language film options, there are some other horror flicks that we can also experience this season. My Boo” (อนงค์), the Thai horror romantic comedy film, is a cute, refreshing addition to this list. It follows Joe, a good-for-nothing young man, who falls in love with a ghost girl from a haunted house he inherited from his grandfather.

My Boo (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:
Directed by Komgrit Triwimol, “My Boo” (อนงค์,2024) is a Thai horror film that revolves around a young slacker who inherits an old, haunted house. While there, he meets a dead family that was never reincarnated and falls in love with the daughter.
What happens in the Thai horror romance, ‘My Boo’?
“My Boo” revolves around Joe (Gee Sutthirak Subvijitra), who spends most of his days lazing around at his home, playing video games. One day, he falls asleep while playing a horror video game and experiences a horrifying nightmare. His mother stops him in the middle of his game and asks him to prepare for their family meeting. Shortly before, his grandfather, Amnaj Techamahapaisarnkij, passed away. So, his family meets to learn about Amnaj’s will. Amnaj transfers most of his inheritance to Joe’s relatives. Then, when it comes to Joe, Amnaj accidentally leaves him nothing.
Turns out, right before finishing his will, Amnaj took his last breath. So, he could not share anything with Joe. Regardless, as a consolation, Joe’s cousin offers him a family house. Soon, Joe contacts Mha Jai Dee, a quick loan service. Then, he travels to his old, inherited house, hoping to sell it to a man. This man sees a figure on the farm behind but Joe doesn’t. It spooks him so much that he immediately runs away. Right after, Joe meets this figure, Uncle Pom (Na Phuang Chernyim), and asks him about the house but receives no help.
Who are the ghosts inside Joe’s inherited house?
Joe walks back into the house and witnesses a man and two women being strangled to death. He realizes that the house is haunted and decides to get rid of the ghosts. He seeks help from some monks. Despite their rituals, he finds no peace. One night, he wakes up to some strange movements. So, he prays to God to find peace. Right after, he sees the three people he earlier witnessed getting killed. Unlike him, Uncle Pom does not see them. Later, Joe looks for information about this house. It leads him to realize who these three people are.
Decades ago, a robbery occurred in that very house. It happened when its owners, a married couple, were on a trip. After the robbery incident, their daughter, Anong (Bow Maylada Susri), and their two servants, Thong Yip & Thong Gon went missing without a trace. Joe saw the same three people inside his inherited house. Back then, they were brutally killed. Since no one realized they were dead, they did not go through the post-death rituals. That’s why they have not been able to reincarnate. Joe agrees to help them find their bones. Then, he tells Anong what happened to her parents after her death.
How does Joe pay off his debt?
Joe digs a huge hole next to his inherited house. After a call with his mother, he abruptly leaves to visit a local fair. While there, he crosses paths with a group of friends entering a haunted house. Soda (Aom Punyawee Jungcharoen), a girl from this group, gets scared. While trying to run away, she bumps into Joe and refuses to leave him. So, her friend, Kong (Timethai Dharmthai Plangsilp) gets angry at Joe. As they start fighting, Uncle Pom arrives there and saves Joe. Moments later, the loan shark arrives and forces Joe to pay back his loan.
Right there, Joe cooks up a plan to pay off his debt. He tells the shark to give him some more time to settle it. In exchange, he agrees to pay an additional interest. Later, Joe decides to turn his house into a haunted house experience. He tells Anong, Thong Yip, and Thong Gon to scare the customers with ghostly tricks. Soon, he invites Kong, Soda, and their friends for a tour inside. He manages to spook everyone. Then, through word of mouth, he turns it into a bigger business and keeps earning every night. He earns enough to pay back his debt and fend off the loan shark.
Joe & Anong’s Romance
When Joe is not working on his business, he digs around the house, looking for bones of Anong, Thong Yip, and Thong Gon. He grows fond of Anong and vice versa. While they fall in love with each other, they soon face the truth of their relationship. He is a human while she is a ghost. So, they cannot be together. Besides, he reads spooky stories about humans who previously attempted to be close to ghosts and died in the process. Shortly after, he gets beaten up by two goons at his haunted house.
As Joe faints, Anong possesses his body to fend off the goons. Once he regains his consciousness, he gets scared of his future. What if Anong kills him and uses his body as a vessel to live a human life? Anong restores his faith in her. Then, he makes another plan to go out together as lovers. He invites Kong to his house and drugs him. Anong possesses Kong’s body and joins him on a date in the town. This way, they can touch each other, hold hands, and act like a couple. There’s only one caveat. Unlike him, everyone else sees him hanging out with Kong and thinks he is in love with Kong.
