A remake of the 2021 Norwegian dark-comedy thriller “The Trip,” “Over Your Dead Body” is one mean-spirited joyride when it comes to peppering every attack on your moral fibre with the right kind of dark humor. The outrageous nature of the Jorma Taccone directorial could remind one of the absolute bonkers “Treehouse of Horror” segments from “The Simpsons.” Despite taking some preposterous leaps, the Jason Segel-Samara Weaving starrer simply works. And the idiosyncratic synergy between Segel and Weaving helps, along with a strong supporting cast that consists of Timothy Olyphant, Keith Jardine, and Juliette Lewis.

Over Your Dead Body (2026) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

One look at Dan Burton (Segel) reveals the world-weary disdain on his face. His miserable day begins with shooting inane ad films. The down-on-his-luck director has not had success in a long time, which has left him working for pop-up ad companies and understandably stunted his creative spark. As Dan leaves work, he makes sure most people hear about his plans for a trip to his ancestral lake house with his wife, Lisa (Weaving). He also makes a point of telling everyone that Lisa plans to hike alone in dangerous terrain. Before picking up Lisa, Dan visits his disgruntled father in a care home; his father wishes for a war on him.

As Dan and Lisa travel together, it becomes clear that the couple is deeply unhappy. Dan’s behavior suggests an ulterior motive for the trip: we see him packing duct tape, chloroform, a saw, and other suspicious items. It’s obvious he plans to murder Lisa and make it look like an accident. Lisa, who is also struggling to build a career as a theatre actress, is equally fed up with her husband. In the secluded cabin, Dan cooks what he believes is Lisa’s favorite dish. The dinner-table argument is so spicy it makes you wonder whether the couple will try to kill each other right then and there. The couple goes to bed, with earphones on to listen to their individual calming podcasts.

The next morning, Dan springs into action. He soaks a hand towel with a liberal amount of chloroform and steels himself to put it over Lisa’s face—only to have Lisa flip the script. She pulls a taser, electrocutes Dan, and knocks him out. When he comes to, he’s tied to a chair, and Lisa calmly explains that she plans to kill him. Like Dan, she’d been broadcasting the trip: she told people they were going to the lake house and that Dan would be out hunting. Her plan is to use one of his hunting rifles to make his death look like a hunting accident. As they bicker again, trading insults about whose assassination plan is more ridiculous, Dan’s associate Henry arrives.

Henry, an ex-con and Dan’s friend, is the one Dan recruited to help kill Lisa. Dan promised Henry half the insurance payout in exchange for his help; he needed Henry because he wasn’t keen on dismembering Lisa’s body so it wouldn’t float in the lake. Henry’s arrival shifts the balance back in Dan’s favor: he knocks Lisa out and frees Dan, then ties Lisa to a chair with a gun trained on her. Lisa quickly reveals that the fifty thousand rupees Dan promised Henry is not half of the insurance money—Dan lied about the total. It isn’t a hundred thousand; it’s a million dollars. That revelation changes Henry’s mind. As Dan and Lisa scramble to secure Henry’s loyalty, a chaotic struggle breaks out. While wrestling over the gun, they accidentally fire it, and Henry is killed instantly.

Over Your Dead Body (2026) Movie Ending Explained:

Why Lisa and Dan Wanted to Kill Each Other in the First Place?

Though several grievances motivate the couple’s mutual hatred, the key cause is the gradual evaporation of love. Early on, Dan learns that Lisa had an affair with a classmate from her acting course at a party both attended. That discovery may have been the tipping point, but Dan’s vitriol runs deeper. His repeated failures since his first film, combined with Lisa’s cutting remarks, have amplified his resentment. For Dan, every counterargument Lisa has offered over the past few years has felt like mockery. Similarly, Lisa is fed up with Dan’s inability to deal with his own shit, so to speak.

Lisa had saved a significant amount of money for her career, but Dan spent it on his films, which flopped at the box office. Dan’s ongoing insecurity drained Lisa’s energy, and his constant put-downs of her acting pushed her over the edge. Their insecurities depleted the last reserves of love between them, leaving room for something far more corrosive: a frustration and depression that turned into mutual hatred. As a result, both see the large insurance payout as their escape—and they reach for it at the same time. That is why they tried to kill each other.

Who are Pete, Todd, and Allegra?

After Henry’s death, Dan and Lisa wrap his body and resume their fight upstairs. The gun fires again, striking the attic. To their shock, two men and a woman tumble down: Pete (Olyphant), Todd (Jardine), and Allegra (Lewis). A quick flashback reveals that Pete and Todd are escaped convicts from a nearby high-security prison and known killers. Allegra, a cop, helped them escape; she is unhinged in her devotion to Pete. The three have been hiding in the lake house attic since Dan and Lisa arrived, watching the couple’s futile attempts to kill one another from above.

The fugitives quickly overpower Dan and Lisa and demand money in exchange for their lives. Dan admits they have none. Pete lets Allegra take over the interrogation; she threatens Dan with rape, saying Todd will carry it out. Pete spots one of Dan’s movie posters in the basement and, oddly, declares himself a fan. Even in that moment, Dan is stunned that someone admires his work. Pete still orders Todd to kill him. With no other option, Lisa admits she has about fifty thousand rupees in her bank account and offers to withdraw it at an ATM—on the condition that they spare both of them.

The fugitives accept the deal and leave the couple in the basement. Dan, however, suspects they’ll be killed even if they hand over the money. Using a pool ball, he knocks Todd out and helps Lisa escape, triggering a cat-and-mouse struggle. Dan and Lisa overpower Todd and stab him repeatedly, but he still survives. Lisa fights Allegra while Dan confronts Pete, yet the fugitives regain the upper hand. Pete drags Dan to a lawn mower, planning to shred his face with it.

How Did Dan’s Dad Save the Couple?

At that moment, Dan’s father, Michael, arrives by car and runs Pete over. A flashback shows how it happened: a neighbor of the lake house (which belongs to Michael) calls to say a window was broken. Prompted, Michael makes a daring midnight escape from the care home, steals an orderly’s car, and races to the scene. A war veteran, he grabs Pete and instantly shoots Todd in the head. Allegra stabs Michael, but he manages to shoot her in the foot. Pete recovers, throws Michael into the lawn mower, and kills him—yet Michael’s intervention gives Dan and Lisa the chance to flee.

Pete fires at the car, stopping Dan and Lisa from escaping. With no other option, they decide to fight. Allegra, already bleeding badly from her foot wound, is the first to go when Dan shoots her in the head. Lisa tries to flee by boat, but Pete catches her; Dan jumps in after her. A clumsy struggle rocks the boat in the middle of the lake. In the end, the bag of stones that Dan had prepared to kill Lisa becomes their salvation: they tie the bag around Pete’s neck and drown him.

What Happens to Dan and Lisa?

While Pete drowns, Dan also falls into the lake. Lisa hesitates, then chooses to save him. Bloodied and injured, the couple apologizes for trying to kill each other. Lisa admits she had the affair, hoping Dan would fight for her and for their marriage; Dan apologizes for his insecurity. They agree to give their relationship another try.

When the police arrive, Dan and Lisa tell them the fugitives attacked the couple while they were vacationing. Branded hero-survivors, they capitalize on their notoriety by turning the ordeal into a film. With his restored reputation, Dan directs the movie, casting A-list star Kumail Nanjiani, and Lisa stars as the heroine—an onscreen role drawn from her own experience. Dan and Lisa become a bona fide Hollywood couple.
