“Pachinko” (season 2) episode 5 is now on Apple TV+. The fourth episode of its second season followed Sunja and her family’s life as they settled into their new home. Sunja and Kyunghee began working in a rice paddy. Hansu gave them a pleasant surprise by reuniting Sunja with her mother. Because of this huge favor, Hansu thought Sunja would agree to be with him. But she rejects his proposal.

On the other hand, while Noa becomes friends with his Japanese classmate, Chang-ho and Kyunghee seek solace in each other. Toward the end of the episode, Noa caught a glimpse of Hansu’s violent side. It repelled him from this otherwise charitable man. In 1989, Solomon sabotaged Katsu Abe’s deal to help Tom get hold of Han Geum-ja’s land in Japan. Old Sunja learned about Solomon and Naomi’s love. Later, she called Youn Yuh-Jung, and they ruminated about their lives. The fifth episode follows Yoseb’s return home after a horrifying tragedy. Sunja and her family relocate to find a better life. Noa grows up and prepares for his university admission exams.

Pachinko (Season 2) Episode 5 “Chapter Thirteen” Recap:

The fifth episode of Pachinko’s second season briefly follows Yoseb’s (Han Jun-woo) life while working in Nagasaki. Yoseb is Isak’s older brother and Kyunghee’s (Jung Eun-chae) husband. We meet Yoseb on the first of August 1945, roughly a week before the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He worked tirelessly at a factory with several workers toiling under the command of their Japanese superior. Soon, he is told to guide a new young worker about his duties. After work, the two meet at a bar. The young man asks Yoseb to join him for drinks. Unlike Yoseb, this young man is cynical. He thinks there will be nothing worth fighting for after the war. Yoseb thinks otherwise.

Regardless, the two discuss their pasts and how they got stuck into their current lives. The young factory worker reminds Yoseb of Isak. Yoseb regrets bringing Isak into the conflicts that led to his death. The young worker recalls how a then-uncurable disease killed most people from his village, including his father. These past traumas shape their ways of looking at the world. A few days later, a fight breaks out in the factory between Yoseb and the same young worker over their ideological differences. The guard carries Yoseb outside the building and throws him in a truck. Within moments, the city gets hit with explosives that burn it to the ground. Despite heavy injuries, Yoseb survives and returns home.

Yoseb’s Return

After the tragedies in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan decides to end its efforts in war. Soon after, Yoseb returns home with a severely bruised face. Sunja (Minha Kim) and Kyunghee start taking care of him. Later, Hansu (Lee Min-ho) tells him about the current state. Yoseb realizes the war has finally ended and thinks of returning to Korea. Hansu advises against it. Soon, Yoseb realizes Hansu hopes to be in Noa’s (Kim Kang-hoon) life upon Isak’s death. So, he protests against it. But in his current state, Yoseb can do only so much. During this conversation, Hansu shows his dark, possessive side and asserts his dominance. Regardless, Noa, who recently saw Hansu’s violent side, remains distant from Hansu.

Since Yoseb cannot get angry at Hansu, he takes out his frustration on Kyunghee, who toils for him as an ideal wife. Chang-ho (Kim Sungkyu) helplessly sees Kyunghee’s turmoil but doesn’t act upon his desires. Soon, the family moves out of the farmhouse back to the city. They return to their old Osaka home, burned to ashes. There, Kyunghee desperately looks for a box she hid in the ground. As Chang-ho helps her find it, Yoseb looks at them from afar. He realizes that they adore each other. The American soldiers, still in Japan, intimidate young Mozasu (Carter Jeong) with his condescending attitude. They throw a pair of shades at him and consider it an act of charity.

By 1950, Sunja and Kyunghee settle in their new home in Osaka. With Yangjin, they start preparing and selling traditional dishes to the locals. Simultaneously, he works part-time at the telegraph office to help the family with their finances. Sunja hopes Noa gets good grades and seeks a better, more dignified life. With that, he starts feeling the pressure of succeeding no matter what. Around this time, Sunja starts looking for a place to start a restaurant for herself. A family friend agrees to help her with it.

Solomon’s Ambitious Proposal

In 1989, Solomon (Jin Ha) noticed a new golf-enthusiast trend rising in Japan. So, during a meeting with Mamoru Yoshii (Louis Ozawa), Solomon suggests opening an elite, members-only golf club and shares his plan. Yoshii isn’t optimistic about this deal since it seems too good to be true. Solomon tries to convince him of its potential. Meanwhile, Naomi (Anna Sawai) joins Tom (Jimmi Simpson) for a meeting with a business associate at the Shiffley’s.

While Tom tries to sabotage Katsu Abe’s (Yoshio Maki) plan to build a hotel on Geum-ja’s land, Naomi proposes to help Abe with his financial difficulties. Soon, Tom joins Yoshii and Solomon, revealing that Naomi appeals in Abe’s favor. Yoshii knows that Solomon is dating Naomi. So, he asks Solomon to convince her to take steps in their favor. Only then does Tom learn about Solomon and Naomi’s relationship and gets surprised.

Pachinko (Season 2) Episode 5 “Chapter Thirteen” Ending Explained:

What happens during Noa’s university admission exams?

Even back in Osaka, Chang-ho needs to work under Hansu’s orders. Hansu uses Chang-ho to get information about Noa and Sunja’s lives since Noa refuses to see him. Chang-ho is tired of acting like a spy and seeks a way out. Hansu agrees to let him go only after Noa’s university admission. Later, Hansu joins a meeting with his father-in-law and his working associates. The old man introduces Kurogane-kun as the new hope for their party. Kurogane-kun hopes to restore Japan’s pride and glory in its trying times. Hansu thinks they should instead focus on a transition plan after the Americans depart.

Kurogane-kun concludes that Hansu harbors sympathies toward the Americans due to his working history with them. Then, Kurogane-kun shares his anti-Korean rhetoric and argues the importance of Americans only for rooting out the communists. While that happens, Sunja feels bad for Noa, who needs to work despite his studies. He says he would rather stand on his feet than take the easy way out and use Hansu’s money. Sunja feels proud of Noa, his dedication, and his hard work. Eventually, Noa leaves home for the exam. On his way to the center, he meets the local tofu maker he often visits.

Noa fears that he might fail the exams, but she boosts his confidence and says he won’t fail. Soon, Noa reaches his exam center and notices his old friend at a distance. But this friend wilfully ignores him. During this time, internal tensions between Korea rose as two military forces with different ideological beliefs fought against each other. This resulted in a bloody conflict between the North and the South of Korea.
