Palm Royale Episode 4 “Maxine Rolls the Dice” Recap:
A flashback of a ‘better’ Norma opens Episode 4 before her coma days, hosting one of those ball nights when suddenly a gunshot from one of her villa rooms shocks everyone. Coming back to the present time with the new ‘squatters’ of the Delacorte villa – Maxine and Douglas are enjoying their time by the pool. Maxine imagines coming clean to her husband but is afraid to do so. On top of it, Douglas announces that he will be quitting the airline service now that Big Fortune is on the couple’s way.
On the other end, while trying to find the key to Norma’s Rolodex, Evelyn learns that her friend can respond to her questions by blinking her eyes. Back at the bookstore, Maxine comes rushing to Linda, asking how to keep it together with all the secrets and lies. Linda, who grew up in this town, knows the tactics quite well and suggests a frantic Maxine to keep it cool and pretend she has done nothing. However, as good a friend as one can be, she also reminds Maxine that she should come clean to her husband.
After being summoned by the court, Maxine learns that Robert may be the heir to Norma’s trusts and assets. Robert, on the other hand, is inclined to learn how Maxine goes forward after realizing it was Linda who stole the Rolodex (episode 3). While seeing Norma at the hospice, Robert meets Linda’s father, Skeet (Bruce Dern), a veteran in his time who earned a fortune by committing to war. Both Linda and Robert come to common ground when it comes to the Rolodex being with Linda, where she plans to destroy it than let it be with Maxine.
While getting ready for Raquel’s Havana party, Douglas yet again announces to his wife that he has, in fact, quit his job. At the party, both Robert and Maxine notice Raquel wearing Norma’s Ruby necklace, and the two try to get their hands on it immediately. Meanwhile, Evelyn shares with Maxine that it is important for her to co-host the Gala Night because she is fading from the hierarchy. She once again reminds Maxine to keep looking for the key.
On the other hand, Dinah informs Maxine that her lover is plotting to kill her husband out of pure jealousy. Later, we see Robert finally getting his hand on the Ruby necklace by flirting his way with Raquel and, in a subtle manner, also threatening her that if she doesn’t oblige by returning the jewelry, he might suggest to the police that her husband is behind acquiring it. Maxine’s worry also includes Douglas getting carried away at the casino when she learns he might become Perry’s (Dinah’s husband) business partner.
Palm Royale Episode 4 “Maxine Rolls the Dice” Ending Explained:
Does Maxine find the key to Norma’s Rolodex?
The following day, Maxine is granted Norma’s Conservatorship when Robert is accused of stealing the Ruby necklace, which Maxine had previously informed the police about. This leads her to gain assets only by becoming a full-time caretaker of Norma in her own house. While Douglas becomes really excited about the new things unfolding, Maxine finally decides to spill the truth about how the estate actually will go to a Cat sanctuary. But this also means that they are authorized to pay themselves a monthly allowance since they will be taking care of Norma.
Basically, the couple will have to avoid Norma dying under any circumstance so that they can regularly get a salary. While turning Norma on her regular bed rotation, Maxine finds out that the key she was looking for everywhere was on Norma’s neck all this while.
On the other hand, after being released from jail, Robert heads to Linda’s place and subtly reveals his identity to her when he explains why he’s so attached to Norma. Linda is extremely kind towards him and even points out sections of books in the library where he might find connections to people from his community.
What does Maxine find out about Douglas?
Evelyn and Maxine quickly take the key to the bank to get their hands on the Rolodex. However, they find nothing. Evelyn is quick to dismiss Maxine for her uselessness, but when she leaves, Maxine stumbles on a safety box that contains her worst nightmare – a miniature pistol and an invitation card by Norma mentioning Penelope’s wedding set with Douglas.
The ending of Episode 4 of Palm Royale shows Maxine completely losing her mind. She arrives at the Dellacourt Villa, screaming Douglas’ name. She finds him nowhere but hears Norma mumbling random words that make no sense to Maxine. The final sequence shows a revolver missing from Norma’s antique collection.
While we know why Linda had been hiding her past identity, seeing her real name on the ‘wedding card’ makes sense as to why she wants no one to know about her. What led Douglas to marry Maxine and why his wedding with Penelope (Linda) did not happen makes things interesting for the next episode.
Will Maxine continue abiding by her husband’s desire to be a rich man after learning this truth about him? Who took the revolver, and will Maxine adorn Norma’s Gala-Tiara are a few questions that we need to find answers to.
