This certainly isn’t the first time when a musical biopic is being made. But yes, this one has the potential to be called the greatest of all time, just like the band itself. Since the project is massive, the responsibility of directing it is also given to one of the best filmmakers in the industry, Sam Mendes. As there will be four biopics, there are possibilities that the movies will co-exist or intersect in theaters. However, a precise release plan is yet to be announced, but the production house, Sony is targeting 2027 for their release.
For the first time ever, the Beatles, who have been known for being very cautious about granting rights, are allowing a movie project full access to their life story and music rights. McCartney, Starr, and the families of Lennon and Harrison have all given permission through the band’s Apple Corps. Ltd. Sony Music Publishing controls the rights to the majority of Beatles songs.
The excitement for the forthcoming film can be sensed in the air. Mendes said in a statement. “I’m honored to be telling the story of the greatest rock band of all time and excited to challenge the notion of what constitutes a trip to the movies.” Meanwhile, producer Pippa Harris shared her excitement by stating, “We intend this to be a uniquely thrilling and epic cinematic experience: four films, told from four different perspectives, which tell a single story about the most celebrated band of all time. To have The Beatles’ and Apple Corps’ blessing to do this is an immense privilege.”
The chair and chief executive of Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group, Tom Rothman, asserted, “Theatrical movie events today must be culturally seismic. Sam’s daring, large-scale idea is that and then some. The combination of Mendes’ team with the music and the stories of four young men who changed the world will rock audiences all over the globe. We are deeply grateful to all parties and look forward ourselves to breaking some rules with Sam’s uniquely artistic vision.”
The Beatles’ best-known hits include Yesterday, Hey Jude, A Hard Day’s Night, Eight Days A Week, Let It Be, Come Together, Here Comes The Sun, Twist, and Shout, Love Me Do, and Help!
