The Crow Remake First Look Unveiled: Popularly known for his role as Pennywise in “IT,” actor Bill Skarsgård will soon be seen in the adaptation of the supernatural superhero comic book “The Crow.” Skarsgård will be seen performing the titular antihero character Eric Draven, aka The Crow. The film is directed by Rupert Sanders, and Zach Baylin and Will Schneider are behind the screenplay. The first look of the film has been recently revealed, and indeed, the lead character’s look has evolved a lot since its inception.
What can be expected from Bill Skarsgård starring in The Crow?
Vanity Fair has shared a collection of first-look images from the upcoming “The Crow” reboot, which showcases actors Bill Skarsgård and FKA Twigs. Based on the comic book series of the same name, the premise of the film revolves around a young man named Eric, who is forced to watch his fiancée, Shelly (portrayed by FKA Twigs), murdered by a gang of street thugs after their car breaks down.
Eric is then shot and later dies in hospital. But he is soon resurrected by a mysterious crow and seeks vengeance on the murderers, stalking and killing them while dealing with the loss of Shelly. This isn’t the first the comic book has been adapted into a film, but it will be interesting to see it through Rupert Sanders’ vision. During an interview, the filmmaker offered some insight into his approach to the comic book adaptation, calling it “a dark romance.”
“What drew me to this was the opportunity to make a dark romance, something that dealt with loss, grief, and the ethereal veil between life and death and reaching through that. Look, I grew up listening to Joy Division and the Cure, and this movie is a bit like a Cure song—the beauty of melancholy.”
Among the adaptations of “The Crow,” the original 1994 adaptation starring Brandon Lee is the most celebrated one. Though the film was a huge success, it ended up taking Lee’s life. While shooting for the film, Lee was accidentally shot to death while filming a scene. In an interview with Vanity Fair, director Sanders says the reboot will be something of a tribute to the late Brandon Lee.
He said,
“Obviously, it was a terrible tragedy, and it’s definitely something that we’ve always had in mind through the making of the film. Brandon was an original voice and I think he will always be synonymous with “The Crow” and I hope he’s proud of what we’ve done and how we’ve brought the story back again. His soul is very much alive in this film. There’s a real fragility and beauty to his version of the Crow, and I think Bill feels like he is a successor to that.”
Over the years, there have been several Crow adaptations, and every Crow movie has largely stayed true to the original design for the character from the 1989 James O’Barr comic. Skarsgård’s Crow also serves justice to the character. However, his looks in the film are considerably modernized with a gothic Avenger look.
The Crow franchise includes sequels, “The Crow: City of Angels,” starring Vincent Pérez, and “The Crow: Wicked Prayer” with Edward Furlong.
“The Crow” is set to be released on June 7, 2024, by Lionsgate Films.
