Shaw of “The Silent Hour” is a textbook honest detective, juggling his time between the job and being a dad. Even though he’s divorced, he makes sure to be there for his daughter, Sam, so the kid doesn’t grow up feeling fatherless. Shaw’s been paired up with Slater, who’s got a bit of a love-hate view of his partner. He thinks Shaw’s a top-notch detective but way too reckless for his own good. Slater’s convinced that one day Shaw’s bold actions will land them in a sticky situation. Slater can’t afford that kind of mess, especially with a big loan hanging over his head from buying his new boat.

Things take a sharp turn for Shaw when, during a chase at the port, he gets into a serious accident and is knocked unconscious. Though his injuries aren’t life-threatening, they leave a lasting impact. Shaw suffers permanent hearing loss and now has to rely on hearing aids for the rest of his life. This sudden change doesn’t just hit him physically, it disarrays his mind, too. Shaw starts doubting himself, feeling less capable than before. He even refuses to attend his daughter’s recital, telling her he won’t be able to appreciate her singing anymore because he “can’t hear right.”

In the weeks that follow, the bad news keeps coming in for Shaw. The doctors break it to him that due to the severity of his injury, cochlear implants are off the table. He’s told to brace for the worst that soon, even hearing aids won’t help him hear a thing. To make matters worse, they also advise him to avoid loud noises at all costs and recommend he start learning sign language to communicate effectively moving forward. This hits Shaw like a freight train since he is the man who once thrived in the hustle and noise of detective work. But he is now facing a future where silence might be his new normal.

Who is Eva Fremont?

Shaw gets called to a homicide scene where two men are found dead. The place is teeming with cops. All the sirens blaring and helicopters buzzing overhead make Shaw uncomfortable. The doctor’s warnings about avoiding loud noises suddenly feel real. For the first time, Shaw starts to seriously consider whether he’s still cut out for police work. Later, Slater finds him nursing a drink at the bar and tells him they’ve got a witness, but she’s deaf, and the official interpreter won’t be available until next week. They need someone to talk to her now. Shaw is the only one who knows sign language.

The witness is Eva Fremont. She was in the alley the night of the murder and saw everything that took place. But for some reason, she waited three days before calling 911 to inform the cops. When Shaw meets her, she quickly clocks that his sign language skills are decent at best, but still, out of respect for his condition, Eva agrees to work with him.

In her statement, Eva shares that on Wednesday night, she was out taking photos when she saw a group of men having a heated discussion. Soon, things escalated. One of the men pulled a gun, killing two people right in front of her. Eva also reveals that she has captured everything on her phone. Later, Slater takes the phone for analysis and examination. Eva is also terrified that if the people responsible find out that she has talked to the cops, she’ll be killed. However, Shaw assures her that he won’t let anything happen to her.  As soon as the cops leave, two men break into Eva’s apartment to kill her. Luckily, Shaw arrives and saves her.

How do the Criminals Trap Eva and Shaw?

The criminals lock down the entire apartment, calling for reinforcements. This leaves Shaw and Eva no choice but to hide somewhere in the building. As they piece things together, they realize the attackers must have a mole in the police force or how else would they know who Eva is and how to track her down? Eva and Shaw hunt for a phone to call the cops. But the criminals are one step ahead. They hijack the cell tower and reroute every 911 call made via intercoms back to them. These crooks are in cahoots with corrupt cops. They also bring in a few of their friends in the force to cover all exits, including the lobby, fire exits, and elevators, to make sure no one makes it out alive.

Luckily, Shaw manages to steal a phone and calls Slater. He tells him what’s going on in the building. Shaw fills him in on the number of armed thugs patrolling the place and how they’ve got every exit covered. But just as Shaw makes the call, the criminals catch a ping on their radar and trace the signal right back to one of the rooms on the tenth floor.

Why is Slater Working with Mason?

Slater arrives at the building solo, and Shaw quickly tries to warn him that he’s walking straight into a trap, but Slater is captured. Then comes the shocking twist that Slater isn’t the good guy Shaw and Eva thought he was. Turns out, he’s a dirty cop, working with the criminals from the start. He’s the one who tipped them off about Eva and her location. The real reason Slater showed up was to lure Shaw and Eva out, using their trust to his advantage. Slater’s been drowning in money troubles for years, with his son’s tuition and boat payments piling up. Living on a cop’s salary just wasn’t cutting it anymore, so he joined forces with drug dealers like Mason to make more money.

What Happens to Shaw & Eva?

Once Eva and Shaw are captured, the criminals try to take Eva out, drugging her, aiming to make it look like an overdose. Meanwhile, Slater offers Shaw a hefty sum of cash to keep his mouth shut. But the first chance he gets, Shaw breaks free and races to save Eva before it’s too late. Slater, realizing Shaw’s way too honest to be bribed, agrees to Mason’s original plan to “kill them both.” Shaw saves Eva with an adrenaline shot just in time, and together, they set the building on fire to draw a crowd. As the flames rage, the cops and firefighters show up, but not before a tense gunfight erupts. In the end, Eva and Shaw manage to escape the building. The film concludes with Shaw and Eva sitting together at Sam’s recital.
