You are here because you got hooked on to the MGM+ Show FROM. Chances are that it happened very recently, thanks to the ongoing second season of the show having received a surge in popularity. I, myself, was not even aware of the existence of it until recently when I stumbled upon it and decided to give it a go. And given I still obsess over ‘Lost’ even after all these years, ‘FROM’ worked out as a great fix. I can take an educated guess that most of you who got into it are also Losties as well. But while ‘Lost’ has more than a hundred episodes to rewatch and keep pondering over, ‘FROM’ is only one and half seasons old. The second season will soon be over, and you will again go back into the familiar pit of nothingness. So you might need something as intriguing as ‘FROM’ to fill the void in the interim. With a hefty amount of research along with a lot of marination of thoughts, we have come up with a list of TV shows that are like ‘FROM’ and will do the trick for you. Because of the obviousness, ‘Lost’ is not on the list, but in case you have not managed to see it yet, you should leave everything and watch it.
Anyway, here you go.
6. Fear The Walking Dead
Surely you all are familiar with the OG Zombie show, i.e., ‘The Walking Dead’, but you have probably never given the sister show a try. ‘Fear The Walking Dead’ originally started as a prequel to ‘The Walking Dead’ and focused on the fateful zombie apocalypse from the early days, much before the legendary Rick Grimes woke up in the hospital.
While it had a mixed family as its primary human focal point with Alycia Debnam-Carey’s Alicia Clarke as the main character, in the later seasons, Morgan Jones – a famous character from the mother show takes over, although Debnam-Carey stays on till season 7; not to mention that the show catches up with the timeline of ‘The Walking Dead’ and is now jumping seven years ahead for the final season to further adjust to it.
Although a spin-off, ‘Fear the Walking Dead’ is a lot more different tonally. With the show set around Texas and Mexico, you get to see a lot of barren landscapes, contrary to ‘The Walking Dead’. The two reasons the show is here on this list are quite plain and simple – firstly, the monsters, aka The Walkers as we call them in this world. And given it already has seven seasons, with the eighth and final one coming this year; it will fill your void for quite a while.
5. Yellowjackets
Showtime’s Yellowjackets is probably the least obvious choice on this list. However, considering that in it, a group of young girls from a soccer team gets stranded on an island for a considerable amount of time – putting the show on this list makes all the sense in the world. Add to that the fact that ‘Yellowjackets’ keeps throwing mysteries at you one after another while keeping you on the edge of your seat for the whole duration.
Even though there are only two seasons of it so far, the show has already earned a cult status, and fans hail it as the true ‘Lost’ successor. Considering the structural similarities, that is not exactly far-reaching either. But ‘Yellowjackets’ is way more than that, considering the show has successfully managed to create its own lore – which has eventually made way for many Reddit groups solely focused on discussing ‘Yellowjackets’ theories. Naturally, after finishing ‘FROM’, joining the ‘Yellowjackets’ cult should be a good idea for you; if you have not done that yet.
4. Fringe
Despite the name ‘Fringe’ is usually talked about in the same breath as ‘Lost’ – thanks to this one also being a brainchild of ‘Lost’ co-creator J. J. Abrams along with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci; the show never reached the height of ‘Lost’ in terms of popularity though. This is sad, given the show is not only fantastic, it even surpasses ‘Lost’ in the later seasons. And this is coming from an obsessive ‘Lost’ fan, in case you are wondering.
The kind of things ‘Fringe’ managed to do despite being shackled to Network TV is unimaginable. From parallel worlds to different timelines to shape-shifting to chaos theory – the show had it all. But just like ‘Lost’, what matters the most are its three central characters – FBI agent Olivia, mad scientist Walter and his son, Peter. Not to mention, the recently deceased Lance Reddick was also an integral part of the show as Olivia’s boss, Charles Broyle. Fringe’ even had legendary names like Leonard Nimoy, Christopher Lloyd, and even the late Chadwick Boseman, playing very important parts.
But if you are looking for one reason to give this show a watch, then it has to be the stories you get to experience here. You get the same thrilling vibe of ‘From’ (and ‘Lost’), which at times go beyond one’s expectations. The case-per-week structure might irk you a little, but once you are settled in, you will not be able to leave until it ends.
3. Wayward Pines
In Fox’s ‘Wayward Pines’, secret service agent Ethan investigates the mysterious disappearance of two fellow agents. After a car accident, Ethan finds himself in this strange town called Wayward Pines. Why is it strange? Because no matter what happens, once you are here, you can never get out of it, thanks to being surrounded by an electrical fence. The town people are led by a draconian Sheriff, Arnold Pope.Â
Considering the eerie similarities between the plots, ‘Wayward Pines’ was an automatic choice for this list. However, while you would probably experience the same kind of thrill while watching it, the vibe of ‘Wayward Pines’ is completely different. There is a very in-your-face kind of science-fiction angle in the show. Whether the show is going to work for you or not actually depends on how you come to terms with the sudden, abrupt genre shift of it.Â
There is also a very noticeable ‘Twin Peaks’ hangover here, with Ethan’s character coming off as something very similar to a certain Special Agent named Dale Cooper. But that actually does the show more good than harming it, as it adds an interesting flair to the overall plot. Whether or not you have seen ‘Twin Peaks’, you should try this show if you are looking for something to watch now that you have finished ‘FROM’.
2. Glitch
In an Australian small town, some people literally rise up from their graves in perfectly good health condition. The local sheriff, James, is called for the investigation. James now has the challenge of keeping things hidden from both his family and colleagues while he looks into the matter. What makes things far more twisted is the people who have returned do not remember anything. Then there is a personal angle, as one of the returned happens to be James’s own wife. With him now being in a relationship with another woman, you will get your fill of drama and complications.
The central plot of ‘Glitch’ bears striking resembles the cult French show, ‘The Returned’ (and its lackluster American remake of the same name), which is also about a small town and dead people returning to life; but the treatment of ‘Glitch’ is quite different. And despite its supernatural premise, ‘Glitch’ takes a very grounded approach in its storytelling which actually makes it a really compelling watch. The writing is fantastic, the acting is good, and with every episode ending with a potential cliffhanger, it has this unputdownable quality. With three seasons and as many as eighteen episodes to watch, ‘Glitch’ is one of the best TV shows that you can watch if you like ‘FROM’.
1. Under The Dome
The major difference between ‘FROM’ and ‘Under The Dome’ is that in the former, once people get stuck inside the mysterious town, there is no proper contact with the outside world; while in the latter, there is clear contact with the outside and people inside the dome can even see people from outside.Â
As you can probably figure out from the title itself, this is a show about a small town suddenly getting disconnected from the world by a huge transparent dome around them. The dome cannot be destroyed by any means, which traps the townspeople inside. Naturally, ‘Under The Dome‘ should be an entry in a list where you are looking for shows like ‘FROM’. The show tends to take a bit of time to cook up the mystery around the dome until it finally provides you with the answer during the third and final season. Based on horror legend Stephen King’s popular novel of the same name, the CBS show is intriguing enough to chew on, with its fascinating plot and exciting mystery. All you probably need is a bit of patience, which should not be an issue.
