Under the Bridge Episode 6 Recap and Ending Explained: “Under the Bridge” is an eight-part Hulu limited series created by Quinn Shepherd, based on Rebecca Godfrey’s 2004 true crime book of the same name. In the previous episode, “When the Heat Comes Down,” Kelly Ellard (Izzy G) openly bragged about killing Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta) to Dusty (Aiyana Goodfellow) and Josephine (Chloe Guidry). Meanwhile, police officer Cam Bentland (Lily Gladstone) and author Rebecca (Riley Keough) work together to find out the secrets the girls are harboring. However, Rebecca’s quest gets sidetracked when she meets Warren G (Javon ‘Wanna’ Walton), the boy who reminds her of her deceased brother.
In “Under the Bridge” episode 6, “In Water They Sink As the Same,” the dark truth about Warren’s involvement in Reena’s murder is revealed. Nevertheless, Rebecca’s attachment to Warren and her instinct to protect him causes a bit of trouble in the investigation. Considering how violent and vile Kelly can be, she might retaliate against Dusty for threatening to turn against her. The episode also touches upon the profound sadness and anger Suman Virk (Archie Panjabi) feels for losing her beloved daughter, Reena Virk.
Now, let’s take a detailed look at what unfolds in “Under the Bridge” episode 6, “In Water They Sink As the Same.” Spoilers Ahead.
Under the Bridge Episode 6 “In Water, They Sink As the Same” Recap:
What happened to Gabe?
“Under the Bridge” episode 6, “In Water They Sink As the Same,” opens in 1982, portraying the insurmountable tragedy that happened in younger Rebecca’s (Georgia Acken) life. Rebecca’s elder brother, Gabe Godfrey (Teagan Stark), returns home with his friend, Cam (Isabel Deroy-Olson), and has a broken nose. Gabe is disheartened after the bullying episode and doesn’t feel like attending the dance later at night. Cam tries to cheer him up. It’s obvious that teenager Rebecca has a crush on Cam. Rebecca takes Cam away from Gabe to show her a dress she can wear for the dance.
Subsequently, Gabe tries the suit and seeks Cam’s help with the tie. Furious that Gabe is intruding upon their space, Rebecca is rude to Gabe (“Go away, you freak”) and shuts the door on him. Cam is stunned to see Rebecca putting down her brother with harsh words. A little later, Rebecca and Cam see a helicopter flying over the river. The doorbell rings, and a couple of small boys deliver the terrible news about Gabe.
Cam looks for Warren G
In the present (1997), Cam and her brother/colleague Scott (Daniel Diemer) inquire about Warren at an indigenous people housing society. While the whereabouts of Warren’s parents are not known, his grandmother was an indigenous woman who passed away some time back. Cam asks if Warren has come there recently. The woman in charge hasn’t seen Warren there, but she is curious about Cam’s roots. Cam doesn’t know much about her real family, apart from what her adoptive father, Roy, has told, i.e., she was rescued from an abusive household.
In the last episode, Rebecca is forced to drop acid by the boy gang to prove she isn’t a cop. Later, she hung out with Warren near the shipyard, listening to him speak about the night of Reena’s murder. Now, Rebecca wakes up to find that it’s late in the morning. She was supposed to be on the ferry to go and celebrate her dad’s birthday. Rebecca takes Warren home and sees that her parents have left. She makes him breakfast, and Warren talks about taking his girlfriend, Samara (Isabella Leon), to dance later in the evening.
Why is Rebecca sympathetic towards Warren?
Rebecca asks Warren if he had told anyone else about what he saw on the night of Reena’s murder under the bridge. Warren says he told Samara. But Warren was afraid to talk to the cops when Cam told the media that they would go after everyone who beat up Reena before her murder. Though Warren deeply feels guilty for what he did to Reena, he is only telling half-truths so far. When Rebecca says Warren shouldn’t worry about the cops since he only saw Kelly killing Reena, he reluctantly says he did kick Reena during her first assault.
Nevertheless, Rebecca is sympathetic to Warren because she sees Warren’s unforeseeable rage towards Reena as something akin to her rude behavior towards Gabe, which she believes led to his death. “Sometimes we take rage out on people who don’t deserve it,” Rebecca says to Warren. Then, Rebecca offers Warren her brother’s suit to wear to the dance and helps him with the tie. Rebecca also reveals that the cop Cam is her old friend, and she can take him to her to tell the truth. Warren seems to be on the verge of an anxiety attack when he hears this.
Why Reena was thrown out of Seven Oaks?
The narrative then jumps a month earlier to the final days of Reena Virk. The supervisor at Seven Oaks is shocked to hear Reena’s lies about her father, Manjit (Ezra Faroque Khan). The woman severely reprimands Reena for what she did without thinking about the consequences (If Manjit got convicted, he’d have to carry the label of registered sex offender for the rest of his life). Subsequently, Reena is thrown out of Seven Oaks and temporarily placed under the care of her uncle, Raj (Anoop Desai).
Cam and Rebecca meet over a drink to talk about the previous day. Rebecca reveals that Kelly is the sole perpetrator of the second attack on Reena, and she has a witness (Warren) who saw everything. Cam says there is already a warrant for Warren’s arrest since Warren is deemed the culprit in the anonymous phone call. Obviously, Rebecca thinks the girls – Josephine and Kelly – are trying to pin the blame on Warren since he was the witness. Cam isn’t deeply attached to Warren like Rebecca, so she questions the veracity of his account.
Suman Virk’s encounter with Kelly Ellard
Nevertheless, Cam asks Rebecca to bring Warren in for questioning. Unfortunately, Rebecca’s instinct to protect Warren kicks in, and her interest in nabbing the culprit in Reena’s murder becomes secondary. She argues since Warren is a boy, he’d easily be accused of Reena’s murder, and Kelly would go scot-free, considering the fact that she comes from a rich family. When Cam says she will do it the right way, Rebecca firmly states that Sheriff Roy will go for an easy target like Warren.
Kelly, Josephine, and Dusty are browsing the supermarket aisle, buying stuff for their upcoming Mexico trip. Soon, Suman Virk accidentally comes across Kelly. The malevolent girl insincerely offers condolences for Reena’s passing, which makes Suman feel that Kelly is gloating about what she really did. Suman speaks about her encounter with Kelly to Manjit and her brother, Raj. While Manjit asks them to be patient, Suman and Raj leave to confront the girls.
Why Reena visited Seven Oaks on November 14th?
Meanwhile, Kelly happily poses for pictures as she gets ready to go to the dance with Josephine and Dusty. While driving to Kelly’s home, Raj stops at a place where he dropped Reena off after picking her up from school on November 14, 1997. Then, Raj recalls the day he went to Seven Oaks to take Reena to his home. The uncle has a heartfelt conversation with his remorseful niece. He says she will have her cherished freedom once she goes past the middle school and high school phases. As an adult leading a good life, Reena might not even remember the bad times in her adolescence. When Raj says this, Reena breaks down. She confesses that now she hates Josephine for nudging her to tell a horrific lie. Their conversation ends with Raj assuring that Josephine will one day get her comeuppance.
But Reena herself wanted to take revenge on Josephine. Raj now understands it’s why Reena deliberately went to Seven Oaks on November 14th. Learning from Dusty about Josephine’s notebook, Reena stole it and made prank calls to everyone in Josephine’s contact. Raj feels guilty for letting Reena get her payback, which somehow sealed her fate. It also makes Suman and Raj refrain from embarking on another journey towards payback. Raj points out that the problem was that Suman never listened to Reena about her feelings. Suman breaks down upon hearing this. In the last episode, Suman mentioned that she never understood Reena. The brother and sister drive back home and let the police do their job.
Roy and Cam Bentland question Samara
At Rebecca’s home, Warren calls his girlfriend Samara to tell her he won’t come to the dance. Samara is frustrated since Warren wouldn’t explain his absence to her. She believes Warren might be with Kelly and hangs up the phone. Sheriff Roy (Matt Craven) and Cam wait outside the school for Warren’s arrival at the dance. When the boy doesn’t show up, they go inside to question Samara. Feeling uneasy after Samara’s call, Warren tells Rebecca that he wants to go to the dance. Rebecca seems to be deliberately hiding Warren from the police, fearing that he will be arrested and charged with Reena’s murder.
Soon, Rebecca’s parents arrive and are disappointed to see what their daughter is doing to protect a boy who is a suspect in a murder case (who is also wearing their deceased son’s suit). Warren overhears the conversation between Rebecca and her parents and silently leaves the place. Meanwhile, Roy and Cam ask Samara about Warren’s whereabouts. Samara reveals what Warren told her about the night of Reena’s murder: that he saw Kelly following Reena to attack her the second time. When they press Samara for further details, she says Kelly made Reena take off her shoes before going to the water.
Under the Bridge Episode 6 “In Water They Sink As the Same” Ending Explained:
What does Samara reveal about Warren’s involvement in Reena’s murder?
Reena’s missing shoes are with Kelly, which is crucial information. But what Samara says after it proves to be even more significant. She lets it slip that “they dragged her into the water…” and Warren had said something about “Reena’s hairy back.” When Cam questions what she means by ‘they dragged her,’ Samara starts crying. It becomes clear that Warren helped Kelly to drown Reena in the water. Subsequently, police officer Scott searches Kelly’s room to find Reena’s muddy shoes. Upon seeing that Warren has left her home, a visibly distressed Rebecca calls Cam to ask if he is there at the dance.
Rebecca also says that Warren was at her home. It really enrages Cam as Rebecca knowingly safeguarded a murder suspect. When Rebecca says she will fix it, Cam hangs up the phone. Meanwhile, Kelly and Josephine go ahead with their plan to kill Dusty before taking off to Mexico. They take a drunk Dusty to a railway track to set it up as an accident or suicide. Dusty has nowhere to go, and upon learning that the girls whom she considered her friends want her dead, Dusty voluntarily steps onto the track. But Josephine has a change of heart at the last moment and saves Dusty.
Did Reena’s murderers and attackers get arrested?
It’s interesting how the person least guilty in Reena’s murder is asked to kill herself to save the murderer. Dusty carries the guilt for not doing anything to save Reena from the initial beating under the bridge. Moreover, she feels like an unwanted child after her encounter with her biological mother in the last episode. Warren eventually comes to the dance. He says goodbye to Samara before Cam arrests him. As Cam takes Warren in cuffs to the police car, Rebecca confronts her. Cam angrily says that the boy played her and fed her a bullshit story. Rebecca’s bias towards Warren reaches new heights when she says, “Even if he did it, it’s a mistake.”
Rebecca’s obsession with finding her ‘Perry Smith,’ her guilt for losing Gabe, and her quest to save a vulnerable boy like her brother make Rebecca do the opposite of what she initially promised Reena Virk’s parents. “Under the Bridge,” episode 6, “In Water They Sink As the Same,” ends with Kelly and Josephine getting arrested. The police also pick up Dusty. The following (penultimate) episode, “Three and Seven,” will most probably follow the trial of the Reena Virk murder case.
