Marriage and relationships hit rough patches, it’s just part of the ride. Some couples find a way to reignite the spark, while others, unfortunately, end up in divorce or breakups, often wondering what went wrong and what they could’ve done differently. If given a second chance, would they make it work? Well, that’s exactly what Roberto Girault’s latest film titled “With You in the Future” (Contigo en el futuro, 2025) explores, but with a time travel element. The story follows a couple on the brink of divorce who suddenly get the rare opportunity, thanks to a bearded stranger to rewind the clock and navigate the highs and lows of their marriage all over again.
With You in the Future (Contigo en el futuro,2025) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:
Who are Carlos & Elena & Why They Travel to the Past?
Carlos and Elena have been inseparable since the day they met. But after years of marriage, they’ve grown worlds apart. Now, they’re at that dreaded stage, dividing up their lives, preparing to sign the divorce papers. Even at home, when they’re not caught up in work, it’s like they can’t stand to be around each other. Elena loves listening to music to relax and work. But Carlos always tells her to turn it off because he prefers silence. In a similar vein, she hates the way when her husband chews on ice while sipping his whiskey.
These little annoyances have piled up over time, turning into walls between them. But when the final moment arrives, and Elena sees the divorce papers in front of her, that state she’ll get the house—she hesitates. Instead of signing, she takes a chance and asks Carlos to sit down and talk things through because she is hoping maybe, just maybe, they can fix what’s broken. Carlos, however, isn’t convinced. He believes the love is long gone, that they’ll just end up fighting again, drifting even further apart. For him, there’s no point in looking back.
With nothing left to do, Elena gets ready to sign the divorce papers. However, as she’s about to put pen to paper, the stereo turns on, filling the room with loud music. Next, a man in a crisp white suit appears out of nowhere and apologizes for the unannounced visit. He quickly assures them he’s no burglar but a Cupid, who has been around for thousands of years and is in their house for a reason.
Can Carlos and Elena Erase Their Love Story?
According to him, Carlos and Elena’s love story was never a mistake. They were meant to be together. But if Carlos and Elena think otherwise, cupid is here to give them a chance to rewrite their fate. In the next moment, we see Carlos and Elena in the passenger seat of a red car, with Cupid behind the wheel to travel to the year 1984, the year Carlos and Elena first met.
Carlos and Elena are now in the past not to rekindle their love, but to prove Cupid wrong. They’re convinced they were never meant to be. With only a limited window of time, they have to stop their younger selves from ever falling in love. If they can prevent young Carlos—back then called Charlie—from sharing that first kiss with young Elena at a Mana concert, they can rewrite their history and erase their love story forever. The only issue is that Charlie is head over heels for this concert because he paid three times the ticket price just to be there, and there’s no way he’s missing it.
Rewriting Destiny
Carlos tries setting Charlie up with Cristi, a rich and spoiled girl, convincing him that she’s his future but Charlie doesn’t seem that interested. Even when Carlos and Elena go to extreme lengths like disrupting young Elena’s concert, they still can’t stop fate from playing out. In the end, Charlie meets young Elena anyway. He hands her an extra concert ticket, where they’ll share their first kiss. When their first plan fails, future Carlos and Elena try to rob Charlie at gunpoint for his concert ticket. However, Charlie refuses to hand them his tickets.
It’s only when future Elena tells him about the struggles, the fights, the slow drift apart after marriage, and their son’s death that Charlie agrees to hand over the ticket. Once Elena and Carlos get the tickets, past shifts, leading Elena’s wedding ring to disappear. Since Charlie never made it to the concert, he and young Elena never had their kiss. They never met again and because of that their love story never even began.
