John Barr’s “Dangerous Waters” shows his capability to construct a linear story and give it multiple angles in big-budget films. During filming, Ray Liotta, one of the most recognized actors in Hollywood, sadly passed away. This led to last-minute changes in the movie, but Liotta’s short appearance in a negative role was outstanding in so many ways. Liotta’s brief 7-8 minutes on screen prove his amazing acting skills let alone his presence on screen.

Dangerous Waters (2023) Plot Summary and Movie Synopsis:
The film starts with Rose and her mother, Alma planning a trip with Alma’s recent boyfriend, Derek. Rose does not want to be a third wheel in the trip but since Alma is too eager to make her meet Derek, she can not deny the proposal. When they first meet, Rose gets an impression of a man who is trying too hard, and her mother is already too wasted on him. Derek has planned a great few days ahead of them, spending in the middle of the sea without being disturbed at all. However, Rose does not feel safe at all with this plan as she is too afraid to be in the water in the first place.
Anyway, the trip starts and after a couple of mishappenings, they start to bond with each other. Rose gets to know that Derek used to be a police officer, and now he works as a security consultant. She finds an AR15 rifle along with pistols hidden inside the cabin of the boat. She tries to learn how to shoot an AR-15. One night, when Rose is asleep, she hears a noise on the deck. When she looks outside, she sees a couple of men arguing with Derek, which results in Alma’s death and Derek being shot at. The strangers try to burn the boat. However, after they are gone, Rose somehow manages to put out the fire and hang in there.
How does Rose react to the Situation?
In the boat, there is nothing working properly as the fire almost damages everything. Rose finds some clothes in the boat and covers Alma’s body as she wants to give her a proper funeral when and if she is able to return to her home. She tries to gather everything that may help her survive the troubles that lie ahead. The jib is completely burnt, so she is basically floating in the middle of nowhere. Suddenly, she finds Derek seeking help as after he was shot in his left hand, he fell into the water.
Rose pulls Derek up on the deck and asks his advice on how to survive the situation. Derek asks Rose to put the spare jib up on the mast. Rose does that and as time progresses, they are going with the wind and the current. Rose finds images of the men who attacked that night inside the cabin. In the image, she sees Derek hanging out with those men. She becomes suspicious of him. Nevertheless, Derek is her only hope to survive this desperate situation.
How does Rose manage to save herself from Derek?
After a while, Rose finds an island in the middle of the ocean, and they decide to venture into the island to look for help. However, as it turns out, the island is deserted already, and there is no hope for them staying on the island. So, Derek wants to keep on sailing, but since it is already very late, he decides to spend the night on the island. At night, Derek tells Rose how he got into the business with the guys that attacked them that night. He tells her about the Captain who fascinates himself surrounded by young women.
However, since Rose knows so much about his dirty business, Derek can not take the chance to keep her alive. So, he tries to kill Rose, but she somehow survives the night, hiding inside the jungle on the island. The following morning, Derek sees Rose running toward the boat, and he shoots at her. Derek slips from a cliff and falls on the sand, severely injuring himself.
Derek seeks help from Rose as he thought overnight that he will hand over Rose to the Captain and since he has a weakness for young girls, he may spare his life. However, Rose throws a stone at him and leaves the island without keeping the EPIRB to herself. Derek tells her that the EPIRB does not work, but he is clearly lying about that. Anyway, Rose manages to get into the boat and escape from Derek, knowing that she will not face him in the future anymore.
How does Rose end up with the Captain?
While Rose has literally no clue how to survive, she decides to float around and just stay alive as long as possible. There comes a time when the boat is leaking water from everywhere, so she leaves the boat and moves herself into the lifeboat. However, during this process, Rose tries to put Alma’s body inside the lifeboat. But it gets lost under the sea. Rose cries helplessly and keeps herself inside the lifeboat.
One fine morning, she sees a ship not very far from her location. So she fires a flashlight. However, because of the sun, the ship must have missed that, and the little chance that Rose has, seems to be lost. But that night, a speed boat comes toward her and brings her into a ship. It’s probably the same ship from the morning. Rose thinks that she has been rescued. However, it takes a little while for her to understand that she is now a couple of feet away from meeting the person who killed her mother, the Captain.

How does Rose save all the Young Girls in the Ship?
Knowing that her fate will be the same as the other girl, Rose decides to work out a plan. She knows that the Captain will want to talk to her alone, so she turns herself in to his surprise. She then talks him into her trap, and when he is distracted, she hits him on the head from the back. The Captain is now dead, and his men are searching for Rose. As we’ve seen before, Rose is a skilled shooter, and her combined survival instincts have allowed her to kill every man on the ship.
However, at last, she meets with her doom, i.e., Derek. He has activated the EPIRB, and that is the reason why the Captain came looking for him with his ship. He has sorted things out with the Captain, so he did not kill him. However, with sheer determination to be alive, Rose manages to kill Derek once and for all. When all this is done, the girls inside the ship come on the deck, and show Rose that they are near the town. Rose is being questioned by Agent Richard Friedman, who knowing all the story, shows nothing but respect toward her. Rose may have lost her remaining family out there on the sea. But she has managed to rescue so many young girls who are going back to their families.
