The 2024 Tribeca Film Festival is almost upon us! Taking place between June 5th and June 16th, an additional diverse slate of eleven feature films has been added, hoping to fulfill Jane Rosenthal’s belief that the festival promotes “art that inspires change.”
Perhaps the most surprising of these additions is the world premiere of “A Quiet Place: Day One”, the prequel to the huge hit that was 2018’s “A Quiet Place”. The film will be shown in IMAX on June 26th, followed by its wide release on June 28th. Another mainstream addition to the lineup is Despicable Me 4, directed by Chris Renaud and written by White Lotus’s Mike White. This will be presented at an exclusive membership.
A slew of world premieres will take place. Asif Kapadia’s latest documentary, with high expectations following the success of Senna, Amy, and Maradona, “Twelve Final Days,” centering around tennis-legend Roder Federer, is co-directed by Joe Sabia – and another sports documentary, “Power of the Dream” from Dawn Porter will also be hoping to impress audiences with a story about the fight for equality in the WNBA. “Missing from the Fire Trail Road”, a true-crime documentary about the unsolved crimes committed against indigenous women from Sabrina Van Tassel, and “Dust to Dust”, a documentary about the Japanese fashion designer Yuima Nakazator from Kosai Sekine, will also receive world premieres.
To round off the additions to the Spotlight Documentary lineup, Ryan Smith’s Soldiers of Song explores the lives of Ukrainian musicians dealing with the Russian invasion. Finally, HBO’s Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes, from Nanette Burstein, will receive its North American premiere.
These documentaries will also be accompanied by five narrative features. Mexican director Alonso Ruizpalacios’s La Cocina, centering around an undocumented chef and starring Rooney Mara, will receive its North American premiere in the International Narrative competition, alongside the world premiere of “The Freshly Cut Grass” produced by Martin Scorsese and directed by Argentinian filmmaker Celina Murga, about two married university professors engaging in affairs with younger students.
“Come Closer” by Israeli director Tom Nesher will receive its world premiere in the “Viewpoints” section of the festival, and “Nuked” by Deena Kaspher, in her feature debut, will also receive its world premiere in the Spotlight Narrative lineup. This will center around a drug-infused Birthday party that goes awry when it is discovered a nuclear missile is headed their way.
Finally, Hacks star and Emmy-nominee Hannah Einbinder will premiere her debut stand-up special, “Everything Must Go,” for MAX. The variety found in this lineup should mean everyone has something to look forward to, and anyone lucky enough to attend Tribeca should be in for a very good time!
