Kate Winslet is all set to reunite with filmmaker Todd Haynes in an upcoming HBO project, “Trust.” Haynes has been set as the writer and director of “Trust,” a limited series. Jon Raymond will co-write the project and also serve as an executive producer. Both Winslet and Haynes have previously worked on HBO’s “Mildred Pierce,” the memorable 2011 miniseries based on James M. Cain’s 1941 novel.
What can be expected from Todd Haynes’ ‘Trust’?
With acclaimed names like Haynes and Winslet attached to the project, “Trust” promises something very special.
The story of the series unfolds using four different voices in four genres. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Trust” follows a wealthy financier who reads a book based on his life and becomes upset about the way he and his wife are portrayed in the novel. In an effort to set the record straight, he hires a secretary to ghostwrite a memoir about his life to represent their story in the way he knows it to be. The secretary, however, becomes aware that he’s trying to rewrite history and his wife’s place in it.
The official logline reads,
“In a story told from multiple, competing perspectives, a 1920s Wall Street tycoon amasses a sudden fortune but loses a beloved wife. Decades later, his attempts to control the narrative of his life are undone by a biographer who uncovers the ultimate secrets of the legendary marriage.”
The series is based on Hernan Diaz’s novel of the same name, which won a Pulitzer Prize in 2023. Diaz also serves as an executive producer alongside Haynes and Winslet. Other executive producers include Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler for Killer Films and Diaz.
The man behind the lens, Haynes, is primarily known for directing acclaimed dramas. He has gained recognition for his innovative storytelling and exploration of social issues in films such as “Far from Heaven,” “Carol,” and “Wonderstruck.” His other directorial credits include “Safe” and “Velvet Goldmine.” Most recently, he wrote and directed “May December” (2023).
He is also supposed to shoot a film noir starring Joaquin Phoenix in late July. The project will mark his reunion with Raymond, as he co-wrote the script for that still-untitled film, which is set in 1930s L.A. and Mexico. Haynes has described the project as a “button pusher” that could warrant an NC-17 rating.
“Trust” will also reunite Haynes with his longtime collaborator, cinematographer Edward Lachman. Meanwhile, the series marks Winslet’s third time as an executive producing an HBO project, following “Mare of Easttown” in 2021 and “The Regime,” which aired earlier this year.
