MUBI has just released a new trailer for their upcoming body horror drama, “The Substance,” set to debut in US theaters this September. The film, which had its world premiere earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival and won the Best Screenplay award, is written and directed by Coralie Fargeat and features an impressive cast, including Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, and Dennis Quaid. What is the movie ‘The Substance’ about?
“The Substance” follows Elisabeth Sparkle, a star of an aerobics show, who is fired on her 50th birthday due to her age. At her lowest point, Elisabeth receives an unexpected proposal from a mysterious laboratory offering a miraculous “substance” that promises to make her “the best version” of herself—”younger, more beautiful, more perfect.”

Where was ‘The Substance’ filmed?
According to Wikipedia, Filming for “The Substance” was initially slated to begin in Paris in May 2022. By August 2022, Deadline Hollywood confirmed that the film was actively in production. Later that month, Margaret Qualley mentioned in an interview with W that she was working on the film. Production officially wrapped up in October 2022, marking the end of the filming phase for this highly anticipated body horror drama.
The Substance Release Date:
The Substance will debut in US theatres on September 20th, 2024.
Where to Watch ‘The Substance’?
As with all the other MUBI releases, the film will eventually be available to stream on MUBI, the curated streaming platform for world cinema. However, that will be long after the film’s theatrical release, followed by a VOD release. So, you can expect to watch ‘The Substance’ not before February 2025 on MUBI.
