Baatar Batsukh’s “Aberrance” is a psychological thriller that consistently sacrifices characterization to favor twists and revelations. Even then, its commitment to surprising or befuddling audiences strikes hollow notes because not only is the narrative replete with a clutch of tired, overdone tricks, but it’s also incredibly tough to invest in any of the action. It is an obstinately lurid drama, with visuals as banal as a spectacularly dull narrative.

Attempts are made at unreliable narration and dislodging mental certainties of how a particular situation is in reality. So, of course, hallucinations and trippy experiences are woven into what the character undergoes. We do get hints that we shouldn’t take them at face value. At least a viewer well-acquainted with the trappings of the genre would recognize something is afoot that’s not wholly tied to questions of genuine psychological turbulence.

Aberrance (2023) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

“Aberrance” hints very early on that other kinds of manipulations and orchestrations could be happening, hinged on elaborate deceptions to achieve profiteering ends. Strange dreams that a character has punctuate the film, inevitably materializing into the tangible in the latter stretches. Things, however, frequently spin out of control.

The film opens with a couple moving into a new house fairly isolated behind the cover of enormous woods. The setting is Mongolia. It snows heavily throughout the film. The sense of being cut off physically and emotionally and marooned in a debilitating state is continually accentuated through the projection of Selenge (Selenge Chadraabal). When she moves into the new house with her husband, Erkhme (Erkhembayar Ganbat), she is instantly struck by how it exceeds exponentially what she had imagined it to be in terms of sheer expanse. Her husband encourages her to set up an art studio where she can paint away to her heart’s content.

But he doesn’t turn out to be very kind. It seems he has abusive impulses. He keeps her locked up and coerces her to take a gamut of medicines to calm herself down. Is he really diabolical and super-controlling and monstrous? Their sole neighbor in the area (Yalalt Namsrai) gauges something is horribly wrong in the house. Often, he hears screams emanating from their house and notices that his wife is never let out. The husband keeps her in captivity while he sets out for his work and other pursuits.

The isolation clearly seems to be pushing Selenge off the rails. Or could it be the other way around? What’s exactly happening here? The film doesn’t prefer to establish in concrete terms the exact contours of the circumstances until a later point when the curtains are pulled back. Selenge rejects the medicines her husband forces on her. Moreover, the house is steeped in a lot of emotional violence that drains Selenge. But she cannot quite protest and assert herself and defy her husband. He gets his stranglehold on her pretty tightly.

A still from “Aberrance” (2023)

One day, the neighbor notices the couple is visited by their friends from Luxembourg. Two women are dropping by their house. The neighbor suspects that the husband is cheating on Selenge with one of the women. Refusing to stay silent any longer, he turns up at their doorstep, demanding entry. The husband doesn’t realize what the neighbor has in mind until the latter gets all incensed with the women flinging on Selenge all their gifts while reminding her how nice and wonderful her husband is. He needs to lash out at the fibs and rails at Selenge’s friends for not helping and understanding her. He doesn’t spare the husband, accusing him of cheating on Selenge, and is instantly thrown out by Erkhme.

A few days later, a visiting doctor tells Selenge that she is about to be a mother. Whether that is true or not is not fully authenticated, as she assures Erkhme that being a mother might aid Selenge in turning over the leaf, starting afresh, and having some relief from what she calls a mental illness that Selenge is suffering from. It is the illness where Selenge is not able to distinguish between reality and the fantastical.

It is at this point the cycle of horrors is unleashed. The neighbor turns out to be on some killing spree. First, he kills one of the friends of the couple by ramming a car into hers and axing her. When the other friend comes looking for the couple, the neighbor invites her to his place for a cup of tea. She unsuspectingly follows him and has her first pang of doubt the minute she notices her friend’s belongings on his table. She gets no chance to escape; he kills her immediately.

The neighbor invades the couple’s house and attacks them. Selenge tries to escape and flees, running through the woods with him chasing her. The husband attempts to fight the neighbor but gets killed. Finally, exhausted from running on the cruelly snowing night, she seeks shelter at a house where the neighbor yet again opens the door. But she seems not to recognize him, her mental foothold slipping. It doesn’t require elaborate underlining to reveal that Selenge is also murdered by the neighbor.

Aberrance (2023) Movie Ending Explained:

Whose plot was it?

The next morning, the doctor turns up at the couple’s house. She is admitted entry by the neighbor. It is revealed that the doctor and the neighbor were in cahoots all along. They bring out the mutilated, chopped-up corpses stacked into boxes and put them into the trunk of the car. On the way, she passes him an envelope containing cash. He asks her if Selenge is really mentally ill. She laughs at him, suggesting that she might have just pushed the woman to go off the rails. All it takes is a neat bit of manipulation in the right direction. It is not such hard work if some smarts are employed as the doctor has.

There are insinuations that she peddles in organ sales after trapping people. Even the neighbor gets killed in the car, on her orders. She retains absolute control over her elaborate schemes, in which the neighbor is all but a pawn. The film ends with yet another couple moving into the house. Another man takes the place of the dead neighbor, firmly planted to engineer a path to ruin.
