Bad Monkey Episode 3 Recap:
Yancy and Rosa take the first lead
Episode 3 picks up right after Yancy and Rosa meet at Neville’s sister’s restaurant. Rosa thinks Yancy is making flirtatious moves on her while working on this unapproved case of the arm. Yancy, on the other hand, is simply happy to have someone like Rosa listen to him yap about his intelligent theories regarding everything happening around him. The two of them decide to pursue the case by following their first lead, Madeleine (the girl whose boyfriend was shot in the previous episode). But before that, Yancy and Neville, who have been pitched as two narrative threads of Bad Monkey, meet for the first time.
Yancy and Rosa reach Madeleine’s workplace (Chest Candy—a low-key thrift shop famous for its pornography-inspired t-shirts). After questioning her for a while, they learn that Phinney (Madeleine’s boyfriend) did, in fact, use the arm he received as bait for tourists trying to fish. Since he was the one reeling the ropes on the boat that day, he received the arm from a doctor, which directly came from Nick’s (the dead guy) company, Midwest Mobile Medical.
Meanwhile, Neville somewhat makes peace with his sister, takes his part of the money, and heads back home. We also see Dragon Queen’s YaYa establishing that people have been disrespectful towards her and that she should not let things slide so easily. Neville also ends up disrespecting her when he is threatened by Christopher, who shoots at him while he’s trying to find his boat on the docks. However, he ends up giving more money to the Dragon Queen, whom he considers to be the only one who can fix his problem. But the Queen, unhappy with the disrespect thrown her way, also asks Neville to leave his monkey with her. She believes that a sacrifice on his part will help speed things up for him.
What dark secrets do Rosa and Yancy find at Nick’s office?
Rosa and Yancy then head to Nick’s office, trying to find the next clue that might help them in their unofficial investigation. We learn a few things there: first, Nick’s company was knee-deep in insurance fraud, and a doctor named Israel O’Peele was somehow connected to it. Before they could find anything else, a couple of detectives Yancy saw in Episode 1 try to intervene, leading them to run away, with Yancy getting bit by a dog on his ass. We also learn that a cop named Johnny Mandez was responsible for Yancy’s suspension.
Next, the duo arrives at Dr. O’Peele’s (Zach Braff in a guest appearance) place. He’s a drugged-out, down-on-his-luck guy with substance issues. However, he manages to tell them about Midwest Mobile Medical’s insurance scam, which was designed to cheat vulnerable patients by laundering their money for personal gain. Yancy also grabs a resort pamphlet from O’Peele’s refrigerator before telling him about Phinney’s murder and possible foul play in Nick’s death. He leaves his card with O’Peele in case he has more to share.
After they leave, a distressed O’Peele calls Eve and inquires about her involvement in Phinney’s murder. Eve tries to calm him down and offers to fly him out to the resort. However, when O’Peele realizes that Yancy is aware of his involvement with Christopher’s business, he hangs up.
Yancy and Rosa’s Investigation Takes a Dark Turn
Yancy and Rosa start to feel like a team trying to solve a case. Rosa tells him that the DNA test from the bone shards they found in Eve’s bathroom matches Nick. This prompts Yancy to request that she run a background check on Christopher to proceed with their investigation. We also see a sort of romantic entanglement developing between the two, with Rosa becoming equally smitten by Yancy’s quirky personality.
The next day, Yancy gets a call from a distressed Madeleine, who thinks she’s being followed. While that call doesn’t lead to anything dangerous, he also receives a text message from a troubled O’Peele, who arranges a meeting with him. Meanwhile, Rosa cannot find anything on Christopher in police records, and when she asks around about Yancy from a fellow cop, we see Johnny Mandez overhearing her.
Later, when Yancy is assigned a new car for his new job as a food inspector, he learns that Nick’s daughter, Caitlin, has withdrawn her complaints of possible foul play in her father’s death. Upset by this roadblock in his private investigation, Yancy heads to Caitlin’s place to confront her about his suspicion that Eve is responsible for her father’s death, and her withdrawing the complaint in exchange for insurance money feels wrong to him. He tells her about the bone shards in Eve’s bathtub and then leaves for O’Peele’s place for their meeting. However, before he can reach O’Peele’s place, he hears a gunshot and finds O’Peele’s dead body on his doorstep with no trace of the attacker.
Bad Monkey Episode 3 Ending Explained:
Who is Christopher?
Yancy then visits Rosa to tell her about O’Peele’s murder as she concludes that the dead doctor must have been the one to cut off the arm from Nick’s body, making him connected to Nick’s death and Eve’s supposed plan. Realizing that another murder could happen soon, Yancy becomes worried about Madeleine’s whereabouts and calls his ex-partner Rogelio for help.
Meanwhile, Neville realizes that if he digs deeper into Christopher’s office, he might find some dirt on him. So, he takes a pistol from his friend’s place and sneaks into Christopher’s office, only to find a pen drive that seems out of place. He also has a standoff with Christopher’s henchman, Egg, before he can leave with the evidence.
A worried Yancy and Rosa rush to Chest Candy, only to find Madeleine safe, with Rogelio also showing up for Yancy’s hunch. The ending of Bad Monkey Episode 3 finds Caitlin at Eve’s Miami house for a confrontation about Eve’s involvement in her father’s death. While Eve is still dismissive of her queries, Caitlin points a gun at her, and the episode’s twist is revealed: Christopher shows up behind Caitlin, and when she turns around, she recognizes him as her dad. We can clearly see that Christopher doesn’t have his left arm, which means Christopher and Nick are the same person.
Now, the question arises as to how Christopher and Nick can be the same person. The simple answer would be that Nick got himself into trouble due to his involvement in the insurance fraud. So, in order to use their ill-gotten money to better their situation, Eve and Nick likely concocted an elaborate plan to erase Nick’s identity completely and build a fresh empire somewhere else.
