2024 has been a fantastic year for Horror films. Be it “Late Night with the Devil” and “In A Violent Nature” to “Longlegs” and “I Saw The TV Glow,” the genre experienced a refreshing revival in the mainstream industry. Regardless of varied opinions, such films proved that there is an audience for the genre. Damien Mc Carthy’s “Oddity” (2024) is another excellent addition to this year’s horror genre exercises. Streaming on Shudder, it follows a clairvoyant who tries to uncover the truth behind her sister’s murder. The film is set in Ireland and stars Carolyn Bracken, Gwilym Lee, Caroline Menton, and Steve Wall in the central roles.

Oddity (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:
Written & directed by Damian Mc Carthy, “Oddity” follows a clairvoyant trying to understand the truth behind her twin sister’s murder under mysterious circumstances and find the culprit.
What happens in ‘Oddity’ on Shudder?
“Oddity” begins with Dani Timmis (Carolyn Bracken) renovating the country house she recently moved into with her husband, psychiatrist Ted (Gwilym Lee). Over a call, Ted reveals he will return home late. Dani asks if she should call her twin sister, Darcy, for dinner the next evening. She is concerned about Darcy’s health. However, Darcy doesn’t pick up her call. Later at night, Dani walks out to her car, looking for her phone. When she returns, one of Ted’s patients, Olin Boole (Tadhg Murphy), knocks on her door. He claims someone walked inside her house when she just stepped out. Olin requests Dani let him in so he can help her.
A while later, we see Olin dead in his room with his head brutally smashed to pieces. It is revealed that Dani died the same night Olin visited her. Olin was considered the culprit behind Dani’s murder. After Olin’s death, Ted shows up at the oddity shop of Darcy, who is a blind clairvoyant. He tells her about Declan Barrett’s death from a heart attack after finding Olin dead. Then, he hands over one of Olin’s glass eyes as Darcy requested. She claims she needs it to understand what was going on in Olin’s mind when he killed her sister. Before Ted leaves, she also talks about a bell ring in her possession. It belonged to a bellboy who haunted others whenever someone tapped the ring.
Darcy’s Surprise Visit
During his visit to Darcy’s shop, Ted tells her to visit his home sometime. He also reveals that he has gotten into a relationship with a pharmaceutical representative, Yana (Caroline Menton). Darcy is surprised to see Ted moving on from Dani’s loss so soon. Soon, Darcy shows up at Ted’s house. Although Ted and Yana have other appointments, Darcy refuses to leave. Before Darcy arrived, Yana showed Ted the photos she clicked in the house. She believes one of the photos shows Dani’s spirit wandering the corridors in the dark. Yana also claims she once saw Dani inside the house. Ted, a man of science, doesn’t believe in it at all. Eventually, upon Darcy’s visit, he agrees to let her stay, although they both have to go away.
Yana isn’t happy about Ted’s decision. She also gets annoyed by the strange and grotesque mannequin that arrives in a wooden box meant for Darcy. Regardless, Yana eventually decides to head to the town. On her way out, she notices the mannequin out of the box, sitting on a chair. Still, she walks out to her car. Suddenly, she couldn’t find her car keys. So, Yana decides to spend the night at the isolated house. While talking with Darcy, Yana shares details about her work and learns about the history of her antique store. Eventually, their discussion leads to the night of Dani’s murder. Darcy doesn’t think her sister is foolish enough to let a stranger enter the house in the middle of the night. She refutes the claim that Olin killed Dani.

Does Yana find her car keys?
Darcy reveals details of a private conversation between Olin and Ted’s colleague, Ivan (Steve Wall). She claims that Ivan killed Dani based on the insights she receives through the link of Olin’s glass eye. Unlike her, Yana believes Olin killed Dani because of his violent history. Unlike her, Darcy feels sympathy for Olin, whose mother maltreated him. Yana gets terrified by Darcy’s strange behavior and calls Ted for emotional support. Ted tells Yana not to worry about Darcy and claims she is harmless. But as a cynic about Darcy’s supernatural abilities, Ted wonders how Darcy knows Ivan.
After her call with Ted, Yana walks out and notices a movement in the mannequin, which creeps her out. So, she accidentally drops her phone on the floor. She sees Darcy doze off on the table. So, she walks up to the figure and finds some strange things inside the holes in its lobe. She discovers a strand of hair, two photos from Dani & Darcy’s past, a tooth, and a vial of blood. As she observes the vial, Darcy suddenly stands up and orders her to put the objects back inside.
Spooked by Darcy’s odd behavior, Yana goes to bed. There, she sees videos from Dani’s camera. She notices a ghastly figure in the footage. Moments later, she notices Dani’s apparition in the dark. Scared out of her mind, Yana runs out to the main hall to find Darcy resting her head on the table. Yana walks up to the wooden box and finds her car keys inside. She decides to leave the house and drives away immediately.
Who killed Olin Boole? Who is responsible for Dani’s death?
After Yana flees, Ted returns home to find Darcy alone in the dark. He asks her about her claim that Oli didn’t kill Dani. Darcy reveals that she killed Olin to seek revenge for her sister’s death. However, after receiving Olin’s eye, she realizes Olin hasn’t killed Dani. She claims Ivan killed Dani as per Ted’s orders. Through her supernatural abilities, she recounts a conversation Ted had with Ivan. She knew Ted had feelings for Yana since before Dani’s death. So, he ordered Ivan to kill Dani. Olin overheard their conversation. That’s why he rushed to warn Dani about Ivan. Ted refutes Darcy’s claims and tells her that she is mentally unstable.
Ted tells Darcy that he will get his attorney to speak with her over the phone and share details about the evidence. Before leaving, he tells her to walk up to the phone on the table to speak with his attorney. Then, he removes the trap door cover that’s before her. Unaware of it, Darcy walks towards it after hearing the phone ring and falls into the basement. Then, Ted sends Ivan to check if Darcy is dead. Although brutally wounded, Darcy realizes Ivan’s presence. So, she sends the mannequin to follow Ivan around and hurt him. Soon after, Ivan finds himself tied to a bed in a psychiatric hospital, according to Ted’s orders.
Ted leaves Ivan with a cannibal (a patient in the asylum) to die so that Ivan will never reveal his involvement in Dani and Darcy’s murders. At the end of “Oddity,” Ted returns home and finds a parcel outside the door. He opens it to see the concierge bell that Darcy showed him at her shop. Since Yana left him for good, Ted is all alone in the house. Despite Darcy’s warning, he cannot resist the urge to ring the bell. However, unlike what she claimed, he sees no bellboy around. So, he becomes satisfied, thinking he is safe – unaware that the dead bellboy is standing beside him. The ending of “Oddity” signifies that Ted’s nonchalance about the twin sisters’ deaths will seal his grim fate.
