Gunner (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:
What Will Lee Gunner’s Return Reveal?
“Gunner” opens with a biker gang discreetly handling the disposal of a dead body. Shortly after, Dobbs Ryker visits his father, Kendrick Ryker, in prison, where Kendrick inquires about the progress of his court case. He is eager to know when his lawyer will secure his release. However, it becomes evident that Dobbs is deliberately stalling the process. If Kendrick were freed, Dobbs would lose his sole control over the family business. Kendrick has built an extensive drug empire across the country, which Dobbs now manages in his absence. Dobbs aims to finalize a major deal while Kendrick remains incarcerated, hoping to prove his value to his father.
Meanwhile, our protagonist, war veteran Lee Gunner, returns home to assist with the family business, seeking a chance to reconcile with his estranged wife and sons. Lee’s eldest son, David, died in the war. David idolized his father and followed in his footsteps by joining the military, only to tragically lose his life early in his career. Lee was absent during this heartbreaking event. Having retired from the army, he is back home, caring for his two surviving sons and planning a camping trip to spend quality time with them.
How does Lee Lose his Sons to Dobbs?
In these high-stakes crime thrillers, characters often find themselves making life-or-death decisions. Lee decides to go camping in the woods with his sons and an old army buddy called Jon. Little do they know that these particular woods are home to a hidden drug lab run by Ryker, a notorious criminal. As they make their way through the forest, Jon accidentally stumbles into Ryker’s lab. It causes an explosion that kills him instantly and leaves Lee fighting for survival against Dobbs’ men, who want him dead at any cost. The act sparks off vengeance from Dobbs immediately.
Consequently, angry at losing his men’s lives, Dobbs holds Lee’s children captive as bait for him to stop seeking revenge against the operations run by Dobbs. Afterward when DEA turns up before leaving together with the boys thus driving them deeper into hiding this complicates things further. Dobbs’ sole purpose is to survive and protect his children, even if it means playing a dangerous game of hide-and-seek. A desperate drug dealer convinced that Lee Gunner is responsible for the loss of his drugs, issues a chilling ultimatum: either retrieve the drugs from the FBI or lose his children forever. The situation throws Lee into a tough battle against unyielding forces that take away everything he has cherished.
How does Lee Escape the Jail with Kendrick?
Lee doesn’t know that the FBI, led by Agent Ron Kaylor, had been monitoring Dobbs for a while. Kaylor had planted a mole, Kang, within Dobbs’ operation. Kang’s careless actions, including a suspicious order of Hawaiian pizza, led to his exposure as a traitor. This internal betrayal within Dobbs’ gang accelerated the chain of events, culminating in the tragic kidnapping of Lee’s sons. Lee finds himself in an impossible situation. Stealing from the FBI is a crime that even Lee knows he cannot escape, no matter how powerful he is or how much he has done for his country. The narrative takes a daring turn as Lee makes a bold decision to break into Jackson State Prison and kidnap Kendrick.
Now, Lee’s goal is to exchange Kendrick for the safe return of his youngest son. His decision to break into prison is not made out of recklessness but necessity. Since he has somehow managed to secure Travis from Dobbs’ hands, he can now carefully plan how to secure his youngest son. Lee asks Travis to meet with an old friend named Sean and asks him to meet him at a particular place. Breaking into Jackson State Prison is no small feat, even for someone with Lee’s abilities. However, Lee secures his landing from the sky by throwing lots of smoke bombs. Once inside, Lee finds and kidnaps Kendrick, knowing that Dobbs values his father more than anything.
What does Travis Learn about Lee?
Dobbs does indeed love his father. But he is reluctant to have him released from jail. He is determined to prove his capability to run the business just as Kendrick did. However, Kendrick does not trust Dobbs, as fathers often find it difficult to entrust significant responsibilities to their children, regardless of the circumstances. Meanwhile, Lee meets with Sean. Together, they drive Kendrick to a separate location, where Lee will take him to Dobbs for the exchange. During this time, Travis learns something profound about his father from Sean.
Sean reveals to Travis that they all owe Lee a great debt. During a mission, Lee single-handedly took down an entire Al-Qaeda group to help the rest of his squad escape. Unfortunately, Lee was captured and tortured for nearly a year. Travis realizes they had unfairly blamed Lee for his absence from the family, not knowing the actual reason. Lee had never explained what happened because he believed seeking sympathy would not justify his absence. The guilt of not being there when David died has haunted Lee ever since.
Gunner (2024) Movie Ending Explained:
Does Lee’s Chaotic Final Showdown Secure His Redemption?
Gunner’s ending is as chaotic as it is gripping, leaving viewers questioning the fate of its characters. In the film’s climax, Lee arrives at an abandoned furnace for a tense exchange with Kendrick, the gang leader’s father, Dobbs. As a precaution, Lee tapes a shotgun to Kendrick’s chest, ensuring that the old man wouldn’t dare try anything reckless. However, Kendrick, ever the wild card, manages to steal a screwdriver from Sean’s car and stabs Lee in the thigh during the exchange. Panicking, Kendrick tries to flee toward his son’s gang. But, he tragically trips, causing the shotgun to shoot itself and end his life.
Following Kendrick’s death, Dobbs blames Lee for his father’s death since he is the one who tapped the gun along with Kendrick and orders his men to kill him. The tension escalates as Lee faces seemingly insurmountable odds. However, before Dobbs’ goons can execute him, the FBI arrives, forcing Dobbs and his right-hand man, Chao, to flee the scene in a helicopter. It’s revealed that while Dobbs is the face of the operation, Chao is the true mastermind behind the drug empire. In a daring move that defies logic but satisfies the action-packed narrative, Lee somehow manages to board the helicopter.
The film’s climax unfolds in the helicopter, where Lee brutally fights Dobbs and Chao. In a dramatic moment, Lee kicks Dobbs out of the chopper, ending the gang leader’s reign of terror. With the helicopter on the brink of crashing, Lee seizes a parachute and jumps out, taking his son with him. This final act of heroism ensures that Lee and his son survive, bringing the chaotic and adrenaline-fueled story to a close. Later, all charges against Lee are dropped, and he is finally a free man. His old friend Bob, a local sheriff’s office member, extends an invitation for Lee to join the force, a proposition Lee agrees to consider later.
For now, Lee’s heart leads him to David’s grave. He stands there in silent reflection, placing his Medal of Honor on the gravestone, tears streaming down his face as memories of his eldest son flood back. David had always looked up to his father, idolizing him to the point of following in his footsteps by joining the force. Tragically, David’s first tour ended in disaster. He was caught in an explosion and later spiraled into drug addiction, which ultimately claimed his life. Lee vowed that his remaining family would never endure such pain again. From that moment on, his focus shifted entirely to protecting them.
