Body Parts (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:
“Body Parts” opens with a pseudo-religious cult-like group preparing for a ritual. In the background, we hear these members appealing to someone as Father, asking this Father to grant wishes. Among them is Si-Kyung, a journalist on an undercover mission to gather information about this group’s practices. The problem is that Si-Kyung thinks this is a good story, while her boss, Mr. Hwang, thinks this pseudo-religion is old-fashioned.
Each member brings an offering for the Father, and Si-Kyung also gets a message, which is a clue to what the offering should be. Si-Kyung’s message says, “The one who hears the wish will give his heart and take the father’s hand.” So, Si-Kyung is sure the offer is not money. However, Mr. Hwang asks Si-Kyung to get in and start the recording. As the first person gives his offering, we are cut to a scene where a woman is chopping her ear off. The woman can hear voices asking her to cut off her ears if she cannot obey the orders. Before the woman dies, she looks at a perfume bottle, cursing it for causing problems.
The Reek/ Stench
As a group of friends eats, one of them asks Da-Hee if she is doing okay as someone in her neighborhood has killed herself. However, Da-Hee is not fazed by it. Instead, she is distracted as she looks at a dresser for her house. Min-joon helps Da-Hee carry the dresser to her house. This dresser belongs to the woman who had killed herself, and the cursed perfume bottle is still in the dresser.
Not knowing about the curse, Da-Hee uses the perfume and likes the smell. Soon, Da-Hee falls asleep, and we see a purple circle form, which turns into a smoky face that enters Da-Hee. The next day, Da-Hee asks Min-joon to take her on a drive. Suddenly, when Da-Hee is in the car, she complains about a foul smell, so Da-Hee asks Min-joon to wash his car. Later, Da-Hee meets her friends, and foul odors are everywhere, even though nobody else can smell them. Once inside her house, Da-Hee sprays the perfume and feels better.
The next few days, Da-Hee spent sleeping and using the perfume. When Da-Hee does not attend classes or answer calls, Min-joon arrives at Da-Hee’s house. When Min-Joon arrives, the door is unlocked, so he enters. As Min-joon navigates inside the house, he hurts his leg with a broken glass. Suddenly, Min-Joon places his hand on what seems to be a broken human nose. Out of nowhere, Da-Hee appears, and a voice asks Da-Hee to sacrifice Min-joon for her own life to be spared.
Briefly, Min-Joon escapes from Da-Hee and calls the cops. Before Min-joon could give an address, Da-Hee kills Min-joon. We are cut to the pseudo-religious meeting, where Si-Kyung steps out for a moment to talk to Mr. Hwang. Now, Mr. Hwang wants some shots of the ritual and an interview with anyone quickly so they can finish and leave. However, another participant calls Si-Kyung inside and locks the door.
The Boy Who Sees Ghosts
The story begins with Do-jin, Yu-mi, Gyeong-rok, and Sang-jung bullying Joon-ho for claiming to see ghosts. Do-jin wants Joon-ho to show him ghosts as well. So Joon-ho asks to do a ritual, and after that, if Do-jin cannot see ghosts, then Joon-ho is ready to die. This sounds like an excellent deal for Do-jin, so he asks Gyeong-rok and Sang-Jung to take Joon-ho home to bring items required for rituals.
At the house, the bullies see Joon-ho carrying ginseng alcohol. Back at the building, Joon-ho does the ritual while the others drink. After a while, Joon-ho brings the ginseng liquor for them to drink. Everyone drinks it except Yu-mi. Something strange happens as soon as the others drink, and they faint.
After some time, Do-Jin runs around the building, looking for Joon-ho. As requested, now all three of them can see ghosts. The first to be attacked by the ghost is Sang-jung, as a ghost hanging by a noose attacks Sang-jung with the rope. After seeing so many ghosts chase him, Do-Jin begs Joon-ho to stop as he believes in Joon-ho’s ability to see ghosts. By then, three ghosts come close to Do-jin and kill him.
At the ritual, Mr. Hwang yells at Si-Kyung to interview the man next to her and get out. So Si-Kyung tries to make small talk, asking about his offering. So the man asks to see Si-Kyung’s message and gets momentarily scared. Now, Mr. Hwang loses connection from the camera inside Si-Kyung’s bag.
Exorcism Dot Net
This story shows two high school girls documenting their friend in a room. They believe Hwa-young is possessed, but nobody believes their story. So Eun-ki and Joo-in set up cameras in Hwa-young’s room and the room they are monitoring Hwa-young from to show what exactly happens to Hwa-young. The whole thing is live and posted on the internet. In the beginning, Hwa-young is just an ordinary girl. However, changes start to occur after Hwa-young’s father and sister died. While monitoring Hwa-young, both Eun-ki, and Joo-in have memorized the bible. One year later, Joo-in recites a Bible verse when she sees Hwa-young’s possession live.
Eun-ki is not interested, so she leaves to return home. Unfortunately, Joo-in continues to monitor Hwa-young, but through the screen, Joo-in is attacked. At the same time, Eun-ki video calls Joo-in to say someone is following her. So both Eun-Ki and Joo-in start reciting the verses from the bible. As they do this, we see the devil inside Hwa-young struggling. After a while, the exorcism seems completed, and Hwa-young is free.
That is not the case, as a woman in black enters Hwa-young’s room and attacks her. Next, the woman looks into the camera and says they will never know her name. Back to the pseudo-religious group, Mr. Hwang asks Si-Kyung to turn the camera on and off. At this time, the others notice Si-Kyung not praying, so they get away from her. Immediately, the mother asks the next person to make an offering.
A former resident
In this story, Ji-soo leases an apartment and gets used to her new house. After a night out, Ji-soo arrives home and hears thuds and doors banging. Before Ji-soo can investigate the matter, there’s a knock on her front door. The woman outside is the house’s former resident, who warns Ji-soo not to remove the amulets. Unable to understand what the woman is saying, Ji-soo opens the door and sees an old lady peeping from the next door.
That night, Ji-soo hears a lot of thumps, so she confronts her neighbor to keep the volume down as he moves around. The man is a little aggressive, so Ji-soo leaves. On the stairs, Ji-soo sees the same old lady again. The noises continue for the next few days. When Ji-soo shares this with her colleague/friend, she recommends a ritual.
Ji-soo does the ritual as she was told, but the previous residence is back. This time, she barges inside Ji-soo’s house and explains that there was a murder in this house years ago. All the body parts were found except for the head. So Ji-soo should not remove the amulets. As the woman tells this story, loud bangs come from the wall. Ji-soo runs out and bumps into the old lady who asks Ji-soo to destroy the amulets.
At home, Ji-soo takes down the wall and burns the amulets. As soon as Ji-soo does this, a ghost appears and chokes Ji-soo. In the last scene, we see Ji-soo’s head is cut off, and the body is missing. Back to the rituals, Mr. Hwang sneaks into the building and peeps from the window. However, one of the members spots the man, and Mr. Hwang runs back to his car. From there, Mr. Hwang calls another colleague to arrive with a camera. The next person presents their offering.
Body Parts (2024) Movie Ending Explained:
String
In this story, Jae-seok wakes up with a noose on his neck. This noose is connected to Min-ji on the other side of the wall. When either of them goes too far, the wire presses against their neck, choking them. As Jae-seok and Min-ji try to understand what is happening, a timer comes up on both their computers. So Jae-seok asks Min-ji to find anything sharp to cut the rope. However, Min-Ji cannot find anything. Now Jae-seok has an idea, and he pulls himself close to his phone on the kitchen slab. As Jae-seok tries to get his phone using his leg, the phone falls, and the timer goes back to zero.
Suddenly, Jae-seok sees blood coming from the hole, so he reaches the tube light, which falls and breaks. However, a glass piece gets stuck on Jae-seok’s arm, so he gets it out to use on the noose. The time has been reset, and Min-Ji sees blood and assumes her dog is dead. In anger, Min-Ji pulls on the noose, hurting Jae-seok. However, Jae-seok pulls back, and Min-Ji’s torso and limbs are under the bed. Jae-seok pulls Min-Ji’s head, makes a curve above the bed, and she is dead. Before the timer hits zero, Jae-seok cuts his noose.
The struggle is not over for Jae-seok because the time has been reset, and many wires have popped out of his room. Si-Kyung is ready to leave in the ritual room, but Mr. Hwang asks Si-Kyung to stay back for a little while. Si-Kyung’s turn is to make an offering, and she brings the money. So, the Mother urges Si-Kyung to trust the Father. Furthermore, the Mother says an offering should come from desperation or suffering.
On cue, the other members hold Si-Kyung still as the Mother takes a knife and hurts Si-Kyung. We now see facial organs placed in a crib-like box. Now, the Mother asks everyone to ask for a wish. Everyone asks for someone they hate to be killed. Now, Mr. Hwang arrives, but there isn’t anyone except Si-Kyung, who is covered in blood. As soon as Mr. Hwang starts his annoying talks, Si-Kyung asks the Father to kill Mr. Hwang. Immediately, Mr. Hwang falls to the ground, and a skeletal, bloody hand pops up out of the crib-like box, and Si-Kyung holds the Father’s hand.
Despite being an anthology, the film has managed to find a theme and piece the loose ends of all the stories together in the end. Each offering has a story behind it, and these are presented as short stories. In the end, when each member asks the father to kill someone, we realize the relationship between that person and the people who died in each of the stories.
Through stories, we also realize that each member is offering a different body part to make the Father whole and bring him back to life. While the rest are there willingly, Si-Kyung’s place is finally revealed. She is going to become a believer in this cult/pseudo-religion as she gets her wish and kills Mr. Hwang. The message Si-Kyung reads in the car at the film’s beginning comes full circle as Si-Kyung holds the Father’s hand. Throughout the film, the eeriness is maintained.
