Pachinko (Season 2) Episode 6 “Chapter Fourteen” Recap:
The sixth episode of Pachinko’s second season begins with a conversation in 1989 between Sunja (Youn Yuj-jung) and Kato-san (Jun Kunimura). After their phone conversation, he invites her to a Mexican restaurant. She tries a burrito and finds it pretty hot. While they have a good time, that dining experience reminds Sunja of her past and how things have changed. On the other hand, Sugihara, one of Mamoru Yoshii’s men, arrives at Solomon’s doorstep to convey Yoshii’s message. Sugihara apologizes to Solomon on Yoshii’s behalf and shares a photo of Naomi (Anna Sawai) with Kunizane Tsuyoshi from a few days before.
The Kunizane family may cause issues in Solomon’s plans for his future. That’s why Sugihara wants Solomon to speak with Naomi about the truth of their relationship. Before leaving, Sugihara reveals that his family is also Zainichi (Koreans residing in Japan around the 1940s settlement). So, out of concern, he warns Solomon about the implications of betraying Yoshii’s trust. Once Sugihara leaves, Solomon calls Naomi to make a dinner plan. She says she is swamped with work, but Solomon realizes she is lying. So, he decides to get to the bottom of the truth.
Sunja’s Worries
In 1950, Sunja (Minja Kim) continued working at their food stall with her mother, Yangjin (Jeong In-ji), and Kyunghee (Jung Eun-chae). As the date of Noa’s (Tae Jung Kang) exam result comes closer, they all get anxious. Yangjin is confident Noa will be admitted to Waseda University, whereas Sunja distracts herself from her anxiety. Eventually, on the critical day, Noa returns with a positive result. His entire family is over the moon about it. However, as Noa reads through his course details, they must face the reality of its financial burden. It turns out that they need to pay a significantly bigger fee than their expectations, which Sunja’s present business cannot afford.
Yangjin wonders whether Hansu (Lee Min-ho) can help in this situation. Noa is opposed to taking any help from Hansu. Kyunghee tries to convince Noa that they can pay Hansu back later. However, Noa refuses to take Hansu’s money. Instead, he is ready to keep working part-time as he was doing before. Sunja doesn’t want Noa to keep toiling. So, she agrees to let go of her dreams of opening a restaurant and use those savings for Noa’s education. She also decides to open another stall and sell some other items to make up the difference.
Regardless, Noa does not want Sunja to sacrifice for her joy. So, he decides to abandon his university education to support the family. He plans to stay back in Osaka and keep helping Sunja with the finances and any available job. Sunja realizes that Noa is making a grave mistake but cannot convince him against it at the time.
Chang-ho’s Crisis
Kim Chang-ho (Kim Sungkyu) attends a local leader’s speech. The speaker talks about their future against the American capitalistic forces that caused the recent massacre. He appeals to the crowd to fight back, but Chang-ho doesn’t join them. Chang-ho continues working for Hansu, laboring through petty gigs to intimidate those against Hansu. Gradually, Chang-ho begins questioning the point of his life and wonders about the point of fighting for a future in their country. While he is distraught, Kyunghee takes care of him in one way or another. Still suffering from his bomb injuries, Yoseb senses Kyunghee yearning for Chang-ho.
