The COVID-19 pandemic was a dark chapter in all our lives. Every nation felt the impact regardless of where we were—India, America, China, or anywhere else. Shops were closed, cities were locked down, and the world came to a standstill. Quarantine centers capable of housing thousands of infected patients were built, while those fortunate enough to avoid the virus were asked to isolate themselves at home.  For some, this period offered a rare chance to reconnect with family and spend quality time together. Still, for many others, it was anything but easy, as isolation took a heavy toll.  John Hyams’ 2022 film “Sick,” made on a modest $6 million budget, uses the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic to tell a gripping story. It follows two people whose decision to quarantine at a remote lake house takes a violent and unexpected turn.

The film kicks off at the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. We meet Tyler, a teenager, as he shops for essentials like toilet paper and snacks. While browsing the aisles, he receives a text from an unknown number asking if he’s “ready to play a game,” but only if he’s tested positive for the virus. Along with the message, the sender includes a photo of Tyler taken from behind, revealing that they’re in the same mall. Tyler ignores the message, thinking it’s from a delusional stalker seeking attention, and bluntly tells them to leave him alone. However, things take a horrifying turn when someone breaks into Tyler’s home later that night and attacks him with a knife. Despite fighting back with everything he has, Tyler is tragically killed.

Sick (2022) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

Why Did Parker and Miri Head to the Lake House?

Parker and Miri have been inseparable for as long as they can remember and rarely do anything without each other. So, when they decide to head to Parker’s family lake house for a little getaway, it seems like the perfect plan. They plan to have a swim in the lake, enjoy some drinks, and maybe even invite a few guys over for fun. However, things take an unsettling turn shortly after they arrive. Parker begins receiving strange and creepy text messages from an unknown number, eerily similar to the ones Tyler received earlier in the film. The messages start vague, asking if she’s “having fun at the lake house,” but with each passing hour, they become increasingly disturbing—making it clear that someone is watching what she’s doing.

When Parker talks to Miri about the creepy texts, Miri suggests it might just be DJ, Parker’s fling, trying to get her attention by using a friend’s phone. Later that night, DJ surprises them by showing up at the lake house uninvited. Parker, however, is less than thrilled to see him and immediately calls him out for arriving unannounced.

It becomes clear that DJ wants to rekindle their relationship, but when he confronts Parker about an Instagram video of her kissing another guy, Parker bluntly tells him she’s not interested in getting back together. DJ, visibly upset, says he’ll leave the next day. Unfortunately, this is far from the truth.

How does DJ Die?

Things take an even darker turn during the night. A masked intruder sneaks into Parker’s room and steals her phone. Shortly after, loud music blasts through the house, waking everyone up. Parker goes to wake Miri, who narrowly escapes death when DJ attacks the killer. DJ tries his best to fight back but he’s no match for the assailant and is tragically killed.

Parker and Miri attempt to escape but quickly realize the killer has vandalized their car by slashing the tires. With no other choice, they retreat to the house but while trying to escape through a broken window, Miri loses her balance and falls off the roof, injuring herself. Meanwhile, Parker is pursued by the killer but manages to fight back, killing him by bludgeoning his head.

Parker thinks she’s safe, but she soon finds that the killer isn’t alone—he has an accomplice. Parker flees using a boat to cross the lake and seeks help at a neighbor’s house on the other side. However, before Mr. Lyons, the neighbor can help or call the police, he too is murdered by the second attacker.

Why is the Intruder Hunting Parmer?

After escaping the neighbor’s house, Parker makes her way to the highway and flags down a passing car for help. The driver, a woman, agrees to assist but insists Parker wear a mask before getting in. She tosses a mask toward Parker. However, as Parker puts it on, she realizes that it’s laced with chloroform. The substance knocks her unconscious and it becomes clear that the woman is also an accomplice to the two attackers. The attackers, along with the woman, bring Parker back to the lake house. To everyone’s surprise, instead of killing her then and there, they test her for COVID-19. But why?

It is revealed that the attackers, Jason and the woman from the highway, Pamela, are from the same family and they’re looking for revenge. The boy Parker kissed at the party turns out to be Jason and Pamela’s son, Benji. After the party, Benji was diagnosed with COVID. When his condition worsened, he was hospitalized but tragically passed away from the infection. To make matters worse, Parker had posted the video of her kissing Benji with insensitive captions like “COVID doesn’t scare me,” which showed that she has no empathy, and doesn’t care about anyone. Now that Parker has tested positive for COVID, Pamela and Jason plan to kill her to avenge Benji’s death.
