Sebastian Ortega’s “In the Mud” (Original title: En el barro, TV Series 2025) is a prison drama with loyalties shifting. There are female jailers out-plotting every move, a slew of twists and manipulations. A hijack erupts, followed by stakeholders claiming the scene. There’s friendship and community among women, a riposte to the ugly violence that threatens to break in. The series combs into place several machinations and ploys, the women trying to emerge from crisis after crisis. Trying to dismiss a developing crisis as punitive, the female inmates try to prise themselves out of the roughest, trickiest situation.

How much they band together against the male menace becomes the primary plank of the series. In inspired, diverse ways, each of the women stands up firmly against male authority, manipulation, putting up an organised front with ultimate strength and conviction. To exert themselves against the mechanics of male power requires tremendous steeliness and a clear sense of what one wants.

In the Mud (En el barro, TV Series 2025) Recap:

Episode 1:

We enter the series with a group of women being taken into a prison facility. Introductions to the characters are right underway. These women have been behind a string of horrible crimes. Slowly, interactions spin into a matrix. While the women are being taken, the van is targeted. It drops off into the lake. Gladys makes it out while Romina drowns. Amparo’s boyfriend kills the cops and foils their operation. Once they are back in prison, the women are carted off into different sections. Zurda makes money from the adult content business, thrilled she has more bait now. The prison director, Cecilia, has all of the women right under her eyes. There’s Maria, Romina’s aunt, who squares herself for an attack. There’s also a baby Cecilia has put up for adoption without informing the mother. Confrontations wait in the wings.

Episode 2:

Maria blames Cecilia for not keeping a leash on Zurda. Gladys assures the women that Maria isn’t a threat, as they had earlier surmised. They thank her for rescuing them from danger. Patricia gives birth but dies. Her death must be kept a secret, Cecilia insists. China is attacked by Maria’s goons. Zurda recruits Marina into her sex work business. Gladys also gets sucked into it. Antin demands critical information on Cecilia from Gladys. It’d be a bargain.

Episode 3:

Marina’s toxic, vitiated relationship with her boyfriend, Martin, comes to the fore. It is full of violence and abuse, neither letting the other get away. Cut to the present day; Cecilia goes around barking at the prison inmates, tightening the supervision. Zurda’s business gets badly hit. Gladys discovers Marina is certain about being an adult star. Cuervo, who’s planning to escape with the pregnant Amparo, ends up being slaughtered by the cops, and the latter is also apprehended. Marina doesn’t quite gel with the group anymore. There’s an unease that has crept in. Marina films her first adult video while Maria beseeches Gladys to look after Amparo, who is behind her niece’s death.

Marina’s guilt permeates the series. She has been used a lot by everyone. Her tenacity is a mirror of her resilience. But there’s a lot of trauma that she has internalised. Marina ultimately goes back to her mother, though she is aware of how terribly she’s been used and brutalised by recourse to greed and a self-serving agenda. She is battered by all kinds of threats and opposition. Marina struggles to hold onto her innocence, which has been antagonised so deeply and desperately. Antin’s offer to Gladys is also soaked in vicious propositions.

But she has been raging ever since she lost her boyfriend. She has been full of spite and viciousness. There’s a hell lot of humiliation, slighting meted out her way. This only fuels her vengeful impulses. There are very overtly patriarchal sentiments informing the depiction of women, their needs, and extreme reactions.

Episode 6:

Gladys and Yael edge towards friendship, kindness, and amity. Faccia strains to use coercion and get the better end of the deal. Gladys becomes a rat for Antin, who seeks to dig up dirt on Cecilia. She calls out Cecilia’s baby-selling business. Cecilia has been trafficking inmates’ babies for a long time. Maria ends up dead, which spurs a shift in prison politics and amps up the stakes. Pandemonium erupts. People are struggling to beat each other in a bid to ascend to the top.

Episode 7:

Gladys pushes a power play within the prison ecosystem. Betrayals take further shape. Yael cedes her daughter’s custody, knowing she’ll do better with the governor’s wife. However, Eugenia will take measures to ensure Brisa is aware of her mother’s identity and remains in sync with their Colombian heritage. China has a lot of followers and has been a successful call girl. China ends up having her heart smashed. There’s this superciliousness to her, being on a high horse, which becomes her nemesis. She gets stabbed by one of the girls, sucking her into punishment.
