ZEE5 Global, the world’s largest platform for South Asian content, recently premiered Tehran, a gripping geopolitical thriller that has quickly captured audience attention. Timed with the spirit of Independence, Tehran released on 14th August, a day before India celebrated its 79th Independence Day, bringing audiences a powerful political espionage drama, led by John Abraham, Manushi Chhillar, and Neeru Bajwa.
Backed by Maddock Films in collaboration with Bake My Cake Films, the screenplay has been crafted by Ritesh Shah, Ashish P. Verma, and Bindni Karia. For John Abraham, Tehran is more than just another addition to his diverse filmography, it is a continuation of a long-standing personal passion. Known for his inclination towards socially and politically charged cinema, the actor has often spoken about his deep interest in world affairs and how that influences his choice of roles.
In a recent conversation with Variety, John highlighted how his preparation for Tehran extended far beyond language training or rehearsals. “If you see my films, from Madras Cafe to Parmanu to Batla House to The Diplomat, everything has a very researched geopolitical insight into and a responsible political insight into what I want to present to my audience. I’m a person who gets deep into understanding, for example, why the conflict started, what the Nakba was about. So going into understanding where the Hamas, the Houthi, the Hezbollahs came from, understanding the whole geopolitics of the situation was very important to do a film like this.”
Adding to the authenticity of his performance, John also revealed that his character, ACP Rajiv Kumar, is inspired by real-life officer Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, who continues to serve in the Delhi Police administration. “I turned to him for a lot of my research, from his body language to the credibility of what we were portraying on screen, as well as his experiences in intelligence work,” John shared.
With its high-stakes storyline, rooted performances, and sharp direction, Tehran promises audiences an edge-of-the-seat experience while reflecting John Abraham’s trademark blend of realism and intensity.
