The first teaser trailer for The Odyssey has finally arrived, giving a sharp, moody glimpse into Christopher Nolan’s ambitious adaptation of Homer’s classic epic. The teaser leans heavily into the film’s central promise: a mythic, large-scale journey shot entirely on IMAX, with Matt Damon leading the cast as Odysseus and a packed ensemble around him. Universal Pictures is positioning the film as Nolan’s next theatrical event, with The Odyssey locked in for a global theatrical release on July 17, 2026.

About ‘The Odyssey’ Teaser:

The new teaser for The Odyssey is cut more like a mood piece than a plot breakdown, focusing on stormy seas, shattered battlefields and quick flashes of gods and monsters rather than clear narrative beats. Short lines of dialogue from Odysseus and his family are intercut with IMAX-scale shots of ships tossed in violent waves, silhouetted warriors and glimpses of strange islands, signaling that Nolan wants audiences to feel the scale of the journey before knowing its full shape. The teaser ends on the tagline “Defy the gods” over the film’s title, underlining how The Odyssey will frame Odysseus’ homecoming as a fight against both fate and divine interference.

About the Movie:

Nolan’s The Odyssey adapts Homer’s poem about Odysseus’ long, dangerous return home after the Trojan War, blending mythic spectacle with the director’s usual interest in time, memory and moral consequence. Universal describes the film as a “mythic action epic filmed worldwide using cutting-edge IMAX technology,” promising audiences a grounded yet large-scale take on ancient Greece. The Odyssey follows Odysseus as he battles storms, the wrath of gods and encounters with figures like the Cyclops, the Sirens and Circe, while his wife Penelope and son Telemachus struggle to hold Ithaca together in his absence.

Christopher Nolan directs The Odyssey, reuniting with longtime collaborators on both sides of the camera while expanding his ensemble with new faces. Matt Damon plays Odysseus, marking his third collaboration with Nolan after Interstellar and Oppenheimer, and the teaser quickly establishes him as a battle-worn leader trying to get home at any cost. Reports and studio announcements link Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal and others to major roles, building one of Nolan’s most star-heavy casts to date.

Behind the scenes, The Odyssey is produced by Nolan and Emma Thomas through Syncopy, with Universal backing what is expected to be one of the most expensive films of his career. The project is shot entirely on IMAX film across multiple international locations, continuing Nolan’s push for large-format cinema and emphasizing practical environments over heavy digital sets. The creative team includes several of Nolan’s regular collaborators in cinematography and production design, aiming to ground mythological elements in tactile, physical spaces.

When The Odyssey is Releasing?

Universal has set The Odyssey for theatrical release on July 17, 2026, with a rollout designed around premium formats like IMAX and 70mm. The date places the film in the heart of the summer season, a slot Nolan has used successfully before with titles like The Dark Knight and Inception. Given the early buzz around the teaser trailer and the strength of Nolan’s recent box office performance, The Odyssey is already being framed as one of the defining event films of 2026.
