Apex is a 2026 survival action thriller directed by Baltasar Kormákur, written by Jeremy Robbins, and starring Charlize Theron, Taron Egerton, and Eric Bana. The 95-minute film follows a rock climber stranded in the wild who soon realises she is being hunted, turning her fight for survival into something far more personal and psychological. The story quietly explores grief and resilience, showing how even strong-headed women can break, hesitate, and struggle before finding their way back. It also plays with the idea of dominance, where men often try to position themselves as the “apex” predator without fully reading the room, exposing a fragile sense of control.

In this piece, I will take a deep dive into the complete plot of the movie, explaining exactly what happens at the end. Please note: the article contains major spoilers. Reader discretion is advised.

Apex (2026) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis

What is the film Apex about?

The story begins with a rock-climbing couple named Sasha and Tommy. They are attempting a difficult climb on the famous Troll Wall. However, reaching the summit is not as easy as Sasha thinks. While Sasha is adamant and focused on finishing the climb, Tommy, on the other hand, feels that they must be patient. As the duo climbs higher, Sasha begins to struggle at the same spot multiple times. Tommy suggests that instead of pushing further, they should rest for the night and begin again afresh. Unfortunately, the plan does not go well, and a storm suddenly hits the area, making it extremely challenging to stay on the wall. The harsh conditions only get worse, and while they are descending, a powerful avalanche knocks Tommy off the wall. Even though his body is still attached to Sasha, he is completely unresponsive. His hanging body makes it difficult for Sasha to hold on, and she has to make the tragic decision to let him go by cutting the tandem of their harness.

Five months after the tragic incident, Sasha is now alone, and we see her taking a wild road trip to Wandarra National Park in Australia. Following Tommy’s lucky compass, which he believed in, Sasha is still trying to grapple with her reality. At the ranger station, while picking up a route map, a ranger warns her about the national park’s notorious disappearances. However, Sasha continues her journey anyway, indicating that she is still adamant about things she has set her heart on. While getting supplies at a local gas station, two hunters bother her, making Sasha uncomfortable. When a stranger steps in, the hunters let her be. Confused about which route she should take to Grand Isle Narrows, she decides to ask the stranger. The man, named Ben, offers her two choices, an easy route and a difficult one, and Sasha chooses the harder route that begins at Blackwater Bay.

Why does Ben want to hunt Sasha?

Upon reaching the spot at night, she sets up camp, but the hunters from the gas station show up again, bothering her. She does not engage with them and locks herself inside her car, carrying pepper spray with her at all times. The following day, she begins her journey in a kayak through the rapids. As she moves along the river, she notices pictures of all the missing people placed along the shoreline, which connects back to the ranger’s warning. Later that night, Sasha finds a place to camp, hanging her bag and clothes on a tree branch to dry. The next morning, she wakes up to the sound of a strange screeching. She also finds her belongings gone, leaving her confused. Spooked by a deadly snake inside her camp, she leaves immediately in her kayak and comes across a campsite that belongs to Ben, whom she met at the gas station.

Ben immediately invites her over and offers her food and extra supplies, suggesting that he always carries extras in case of emergencies. Sasha is hesitant, but she accepts because of her situation. While talking, Ben shares that he lives in the area and makes beef jerky that Sasha had bought earlier from the station shop. He also mentions that he knows she is a rock climber, which makes Sasha suspicious. When he reveals that he was with the hunters the previous night, quietly observing her, Sasha becomes even more alert. As the conversation continues, Sasha senses something off about Ben. She suddenly notices he is wearing her bracelet, which makes her want to leave immediately. This moment quickly changes the tone of the story, as Ben admits to taking her bag. He throws her belongings and brings out a stereo, playing loud music, along with a crossbow. He tells Sasha that she has until the end of the song to run before he begins hunting her.

What is the real reason behind the disappearances of people in the national park?

At first, Sasha is confused, but she quickly grabs her belongings, runs, and escapes using her kayak. She tries to get away as fast as possible, but when she hits her head on a river rock, she is forced to continue on foot. As she runs along the riverbank, desperate to find help, she hears the voices of a family nearby. She follows the sound, only to realise that Ben has placed a video recording of a family as bait to hunt her. As she processes the situation, Ben shoots at her with his crossbow. Sasha manages to dodge several shots, but one grazes her thigh, causing her to fall back into the river. Injured and disoriented, she still tries to reach a ravine and strategically climbs up to safety. Using her binoculars, she spots a canoe tied to the shore but also sees Ben nearby. When Ben notices her, she hides under a ledge in the ravine. Unable to find her, he screeches and leaves. Sasha then returns to the river, hoping to take the canoe. However, while trying to untie it, she steps on a hidden bear trap that clamps onto her foot, alerting Ben.

As Sasha struggles, Ben rushes back, and the two get into a physical fight. Sasha uses pepper spray on him to escape, but Ben is stronger and regains control despite his eyes burning from the spray. He points the crossbow at her and frees her from the trap, but instead of killing her, he ties her up. As Sasha tries to free herself, quietly enduring the pain and planning her escape, Ben explains that everything is part of a ritual for him. He places Sasha in a canoe and paddles through the river while she is chained. He takes her into a secluded cave and reveals that he researched her after meeting her at the gas station. He questions her about the Troll Wall and Tommy’s death, saying the incident does not make sense to him. Inside the cave, Sasha makes a horrifying realisation.

What does Sasha learn about Ben?

Ben has been storing the bodies of the missing people she saw in the ranger station. He reveals that he practices cannibalistic rituals, believing that eating people allows them to live inside him. When Sasha asks about a childhood picture with his mother, he reveals that she was one of his first victims, showing how disturbed he is. Ben explains that after his mother, he waited for a stronger soul until he met Sasha, and he plans to perform the same ritual on her. As Ben comes closer, thinking she will not resist, he makes her touch his pointed teeth, believing it is part of the ritual. Sasha takes her chance and bites off his ear, managing to escape. She runs into the river again, trying to get away, but realises that Ben is still following her, attached by cables. As they are dragged along by the current, they reach a large drop, and the fall knocks Ben unconscious.

Sasha reaches a nearby riverbank and manages to detach herself, but by then Ben regains consciousness. As they fight again, he overpowers her and almost chokes her. As Sasha’s eyes turn red, he pauses, and she uses a rock to break his leg. That night, caught between her past and present, Sasha reflects on what happened with Tommy. She admits to Ben that she feels responsible for his death. The climb was difficult, and despite Tommy’s repeated warnings, she did not listen and was forced to let him go. She also does not know whether he was still breathing, and that guilt has stayed with her ever since.

Apex (2026) Movie Ending Explained:

Is Sasha able to escape from Ben?

The next morning, Sasha suggests that Ben try to climb out despite his broken leg. She prepares a booster knot to help him climb. As they begin, the tension builds, as one mistake could be fatal. At one point, Sasha reaches a ledge and stops. She quietly loosens her harness without Ben noticing. However, he senses something is wrong and tries to pull her down. Since her harness is loose, it comes off, and she remains safe on the ledge while he loses balance. Sasha takes advantage of this moment and removes the knot supporting Ben. Without it, he falls from the wall, leading to his death. Although Ben is no longer a threat, Sasha still has to climb further. Staying focused and calm, she continues free solo. She nearly slips at one point but regains control and finally reaches the top.

Will Sasha overcome her grief and trauma?

It seems that Sasha’s unfinished climb on the Troll Wall, along with the guilt and grief she has been carrying, is finally resolved after surviving Ben. After catching her breath, she continues walking through the forest at night and eventually finds a kind couple who help her return to her car. In the end, Sasha returns to the ranger station and reveals the location of the bodies, bringing closure to the families of the missing victims. The final scene of Apex (2026) shows Sasha driving to a beach. She takes Tommy’s lucky compass and throws it into the sea, finally letting go of her past and overcoming her grief. However, there is one moment where she is startled by birds screeching nearby, hinting at the lasting trauma Ben has left her with after everything she endured.
