Netflix quietly dropped its latest sci-fi adventure series, The Boroughs (Season 1), and the 8-episode series easily feels like something fans of Stranger Things would enjoy. Created by the makers of the hit Netflix show, the series follows a group of elderly residents living inside a retirement community that looks peaceful on the outside but slowly starts revealing something much darker underneath. The story mainly follows Sam, who begins noticing strange things happening around the neighbourhood soon after moving in. As he starts investigating with the help of his new friends, they slowly uncover the terrifying truth about a mysterious creature and the people secretly controlling everything behind the scenes. Each episode runs around 40 to 45 minutes and keeps the mystery interesting throughout.
While the show has the same colourful visual style and mystery-driven storytelling as Stranger Things, it honestly feels more like an adult version of E.T. because of how much focus is placed on curiosity, emotions, morality, and human connection. The cliffhangers at the end of almost every episode make it easy to continue watching, even when the series feels like a slow-burner, taking sweet time building its bigger reveals. What makes The Boroughs stand out the most is how it explores loneliness, ageing, and the fear of being forgotten after retirement. The show turns its elderly characters into unlikely heroes instead of treating them like people waiting for life to end. Interestingly, it constantly reminds us that purpose, friendship, and excitement do not just disappear with age.
In this article, I will break down the entire plot line of the sci-fi adventure series, currently streaming on Netflix. Please note that there are major spoilers throughout the article.
The Boroughs (Season 1) Episode 1 ‘Welcome to the Boroughs’ Recap:
What was inside Jack’s room?
Episode 1 opens inside the retirement community. We meet Grace as she gets ready for a video call from her husband. We quickly realise that Edward lives in a corrective facility as he warns his wife about the ‘owls in the wall’. Soon, the guards take Edward away, and later in the night, as Grace goes to sleep, a terrifying creature attacks her from the ceiling fan. As she tries to escape, screaming for help, the creature drags her inside, thus introducing us to the plot of the series.
The story then moves forward as we now meet Sam Cooper. His daughter Claire, along with her husband Neil and the children, are driving to ‘The Boroughs’, a post-retirement community town especially designed for elderly citizens. Sam doesn’t wish to stay in the place, however, Claire feels that it may do him good since he recently lost his wife, Lily. As Sam gets introduced to his duplex that comes with everything one needs to run their daily life, he finds everything repulsive.
It turns out he has been allotted the same duplex Grace was living in before her death. Slowly, Edward gets introduced to his fellow neighbours, even though he remains grumpy most of the time. However, after a few days in, strange things start to happen, especially when Edward looks for a ‘door’ to find his wife, Grace, inside the house where Sam now resides. While trying to understand the confusing situation, Sam tries to talk things through, however, Edward attacks Sam, pointing out that ‘he is one of them’.
Before this, Sam wanted to end the contract of staying in the place, however, when his neighbour Jack reminds him that the place is still better than the creepy loneliness out in the world, he decides to stay. However, strangely, that same night, he hears an alarm coming from Jack’s house. Unable to get through to Jack, he breaks into the house to discover that the same creature that killed Grace is inside Jack’s bedroom, connected through wires and seemingly doing something to an unresponsive Jack. As Sam slowly moves forward to check on Jack, the creature jumps at him and escapes, ending the episode.
The Boroughs (Season 1) Episode 2 ‘The Mourning After’ Recap:
What does Sam find inside the storage unit?
Episode 2 picks up right from the moment at Jack’s place. As paramedics check on Sam, Jack’s body is taken away in a body bag. They believe Jack died because of sleep apnea, however, Sam knows something else killed him. He tries to explain that a strange creature attacked Jack, but nobody believes him. Wally, Renee, Art, and Judy quietly watch the ambulance leave while Hank secretly observes everything from inside a car. At the same time, Sam continues having painful memories about the last day with his wife, Lily.
In one nightmare, he finds a puzzle piece in her hair before she starts glitching like a hologram. Her face slowly opens as if the creature is about to come out of her. Later, Claire calls Sam because she is worried about him after Edward’s break-in. However, she becomes even more concerned when Sam starts tapping repeatedly and talking about an owl in the walls. Trying to understand what is happening, Sam visits Edward to ask questions about the owl. Because of Edward’s illness, Sam pretends to be Edward’s son, Joey, to get answers from him. Edward reveals that he caught the owl and locked it away, however, Sam needs “the key in the light” to find it.
Unknown to both of them, Blaine (the CEO of the retirement home) secretly watches their conversation from above. Elsewhere, Art leaves The Boroughs and visits a rundown house in the middle of nowhere, where he talks to a crow named Brooksy and takes care of mushrooms growing around the place. We also learn that Art already knew Judy was having an affair with Jack. Meanwhile, Judy struggles to deal with Jack’s death and secretly visits his house, where she lies on his bed while holding one of his shirts.
Back at the duplex, Sam searches the entire house looking for the hidden key and eventually discovers it inside a bathroom light fixture. At the same time, Art witnesses something disturbing in the desert as birds suddenly begin falling dead from the sky around him. Later, Sam uses Edward’s key to open a locked chest hidden inside a storage unit, where he discovers a living owl trapped inside. Near the end of the episode, Wally shows Sam the strange blue blood left behind by the creature. However, as they look closer, the substance suddenly changes into a glowing blue pigment before bursting into something that feels completely otherworldly. Wally quietly calls it a miracle, ending the episode.
The Boroughs (Season 1) Episode 3 ‘A Pyramid’ Recap:
What does Art discover in the desert?
The episode begins with Judy becoming suspicious of Sam. While sitting outside at night, she hears strange noises coming from his house and secretly looks through the window. She sees Sam placing something into a grocery bag that Wally is holding. The next day, Judy continues watching Sam and notices unusual activity around his home. She questions Wally after seeing him carry scientific equipment inside, however, he refuses to tell her anything.
Nearby, Hank is also secretly watching the neighbourhood. Inside the house, Sam and Wally work together to learn more about the creature. Using their engineering and medical knowledge, they begin building equipment to study it. Around the same time, Neil visits Sam to pick up Lily’s Bruce Springsteen record and gives Sam a book about grief since he still has not found the album. Meanwhile, Judy contacts some of her old reporter friends to investigate Sam’s background, while Renee learns that her ex-husband has filed a lawsuit against her. As Wally studies the creature’s blood further, he discovers that it has right-handed chirality, proving that they are dealing with something completely unknown.
Convinced that Jack’s death is connected to the creature, Wally talks Sam into secretly performing an autopsy on Jack before the body gets cremated. Later that night, Sam and Wally sneak into the funeral home, however, Judy catches them and sprays them with expired pepper spray. After hearing their explanation, Judy reluctantly agrees to help them uncover the truth behind Jack’s death. During the autopsy, Wally discovers strange puncture wounds at the back of Jack’s throat leading toward his brain. He believes the creature had been feeding on him before he died. Things become even more disturbing when Wally checks Sam and Judy and finds the same marks on both of them. Elsewhere, Renee and Paz investigate strange activity (everything that has a quartz gem on it is suddenly keeps disappearing from people’s lives) happening around the community center.
At the same time, Hank discovers a blue handprint left behind by the creature inside the storage room and refers to it as “Scar.” Meanwhile, several other shocking things happen at the same time. Hank arrests Sam at the funeral home while Judy and Wally manage to escape by hiding inside caskets. Back at Renee’s house, a creature crawls out of the oven while she sleeps beside Paz. On the other hand, out in the desert, Art discovers a glowing peach growing on a strange tree. After noticing that the fruit instantly heals a cut on his hand, he decides to eat it, ending the episode.
The Boroughs (Season 1) Episode 4 ‘Forbidden Fruit’ Recap:
How does Sam, Judy, and Wally capture the creature?
The episode opens with Art stopping at a gas station convenience store after eating the strange glowing fruit in the desert. His appearance has changed, and even his hearing aids begin to glitch when the cashier talks to him. While paying for his items, a robber suddenly enters the store with a gun. However, before things can get worse, Art uses his newfound strength to fight the robber and stop the robbery. Back at The Boroughs, Sam meets with Blaine after being detained for breaking into the funeral home. Blaine questions Sam about the creature he claims killed Jack and suggests that his behavior is becoming unstable. However, Sam refuses to back down and insists that something dangerous is happening inside the community.
During the conversation, Blaine also reveals that Edward suddenly died, which immediately makes Sam suspicious. Later, Sam meets with Judy and Wally and tells them that Blaine cannot be trusted. He becomes convinced that Blaine is somehow responsible for Edward’s death and even admits that he wants to kill him. Even though the idea sounds extreme, Judy and Wally continue standing by Sam’s side. At the same time, Wally develops a new theory that the creature is feeding on cerebrospinal fluid taken directly from people’s brains, which could explain the strange neurological problems affecting the residents.
In order to test the theory, Wally removes brain fluid from Sam to use as bait for the creature. Meanwhile, Renee wakes up with a strange feeling in her throat after the creature appeared in her room the previous night. Even though Paz wants to continue seeing her, Renee begins distancing herself from him. Later, Renee discovers an old newspaper article revealing that Hank was once known as Milton Hauser and had been connected to the death of a prison warden back in 1975. Elsewhere, Art slowly realizes that Judy had feelings for Jack after discovering one of Jack’s shirts hidden in their closet.
Not long after this, Art suddenly becomes violently sick and begins losing the younger appearance the mysterious fruit had given him. Eventually, Anneliese finds him collapsed inside the bathroom as he desperately begs for help. On the other hand, Sam, Judy, and Wally attempt to trap the creature using old televisions along with the brain fluid bait. However, the plan quickly falls apart when the televisions suddenly stop working. During the chaos, Judy shoots the creature, and the group follows its trail of blue blood into the kitchen, where it eventually escapes through the oven.
The Boroughs (Season 1) Episode 5 ‘Another Beautiful Day’ Recap:
Why does Hank try to kill Renee and Paz?

The episode opens with Sam, Judy, and Wally following the wounded creature through underground tunnels after it escaped in the previous episode. As they move deeper through the tunnels, they discover strange markings connected to each of their home addresses. The discovery only strengthens their belief that there is a much larger conspiracy tied to both The Boroughs and The Manor. That same night, Blaine experiences a disturbing dream where he watches his wife die when she was young. After waking up, he prepares himself an orange smoothie that looks strangely similar to the mysterious peach Art ate earlier in the season.
Soon after, Hank contacts Blaine regarding Paz, who recently discovered the hidden monster cages beneath The Manor. However, Blaine refuses to get directly involved and tells Hank to deal with the problem himself. Meanwhile, Hank discovers that Paz and Renee have been secretly investigating him and even found an old photograph showing Hank and Blaine looking exactly the same decades earlier. In response, Hank kidnaps Renee and Paz, locks them inside the trunk of Renee’s car, and drives them to the edge of a cliff. There, he attempts to kill them using exhaust fumes filling the vehicle. However, Renee and Paz fight back during the struggle, causing the car to fly off the cliff with Hank still inside.
Even though he is badly injured in the crash, Hank somehow survives. Elsewhere, Art wakes up inside the hospital after becoming violently sick once the magical peach wore off. Annaliese visits him and pressures him into revealing how he suddenly became younger. Later, Art returns to the tunnels hoping to find more peaches, however, the strange tree is now completely empty. Unknown to him, Annaliese secretly follows him and reveals that both she and Blaine have known about the underground mine for a very long time.
Moments later, after swallowing the peach pit, Annaliese transforms into a terrifying monster and attacks Art inside the tunnels. At the same time, Blaine attempts to convince Claire that Sam is mentally unstable and should be permanently admitted into The Manor. Deep underground, Judy shoots and kills one of the creatures while several more monsters begin closing in around them. Before escaping the tunnels, Judy, Sam, and Wally manage to rescue Art from Annaliese’s attack. The group then reunites with Renee and Paz at a diner, hoping to finally regroup. However, the situation quickly turns dangerous when Blaine and several of his people suddenly surround them.
The Boroughs (Season 1) Episode 6 ‘The Grey Rebellion’ Recap:
What happened to Sam?
The episode picks up right after Blaine and his people capture Sam, Judy, Wally, Renee, and Art at the diner. Wally explains the deal Blaine offered them. If they stop hunting the monsters and keep quiet about the truth behind The Boroughs and The Manor, they will be allowed to live. In return, Wally must work for Blaine and help solve their scientific problems. Three days later, Sam, Judy, and Art are still living at The Boroughs but are now under strict house arrest.
Meanwhile, Wally starts working inside the lab at The Manor. The workers throw him a welcome party and offer him a special drink made from the creatures’ blood. Wally hesitates at first, but eventually drinks it after Blaine explains that it will cure his cancer and stop him from ageing. Wally quickly becomes interested in the idea of living forever. Back at home, Sam works on a strange machine using his old televisions. He hopes it can somehow help stop Blaine and the monsters, although even he is unsure how it will work.
At the same time, his visions of Lilly become worse, and he keeps seeing her appear on the television screens. Sam plans to escape through the desert and call Claire to pick him up, even though Art warns him not to go. At The Manor, Wally finally learns the truth about “Mother.” Blaine reveals that Marcus Shaw discovered a strange egg in 1949, and the creature that hatched from it became Mother.
After drinking her blood, Blaine and the others stopped ageing and became immortal. However, Mother needs brain fluid to survive, so her children feed on the residents of The Boroughs. Renee decides they should not run away but instead destroy Mother during the community’s upcoming anniversary celebration. Meanwhile, Claire becomes convinced Sam is mentally unstable after seeing his strange behavior and sends him to The Manor against his wishes. The episode ends with Art learning where Sam has been taken and decides he must help break him out.
The Boroughs (Season 1) Episode 7 ‘Time To Go’ Recap:
Does the group kill Mother?
The episode opens with Annaliese growing weaker as Mother’s blood is no longer healing her properly. Because of this, Blaine becomes increasingly desperate and starts depending on Wally to help save Mother’s life. At the same time, Sam wakes up inside The Manor feeling weak, confused, and barely able to move after being fed on by the monsters for three days. It is now the night of The Boroughs’ 75th anniversary celebration. Realising that he needs to escape, Sam begins searching for answers inside The Manor. He remembers that Edward once managed to escape from the facility and becomes convinced that there must be a hidden way out.
During his search, Sam meets a strange woman who tells him about someone known as the Duchess, who knows the secret route to freedom. However, before he can speak to her, Sam first needs cigarettes to wake her up. In order to create a distraction, Sam performs “Thunder Road” by Bruce Springsteen during karaoke night, exciting everyone inside The Manor. While the crowd is distracted, Sam manages to steal cigarettes and later brings them to the Duchess. After waking up, the Duchess finally explains how Sam can escape. She also reveals that the visions of Lily he has been seeing are actually messages coming from Mother herself.
According to her, Mother believes Sam is capable of helping save her. Meanwhile, Paz steals a van and sneaks back into The Boroughs in order to rescue Art, Judy, and Renee. Together, they remove the tracking devices placed on them and begin heading toward The Manor to save Sam. Paz and Art create a distraction outside while Judy and Renee secretly search through the building. Eventually, they locate Sam after a nurse suddenly attacks him. During the struggle, they manage to knock the nurse unconscious using a fire extinguisher. Back at Sam’s house, Claire accidentally discovers the truth about what has really been happening.
While plugging in Sam’s televisions, strange particles suddenly trap the realtor and reveal her terrifying monster-like form before she changes back into a normal human appearance. For the first time, Claire realizes that Sam had been telling the truth all along and immediately rushes toward The Manor. At the same time, Wally develops a dangerous plan to save Mother using a bone marrow transplant involving the monsters’ blood. However, when Dr. Monsaur questions how risky the procedure is, Blaine kills him without hesitation. Witnessing this finally pushes Wally to secretly decide that he wants to save Mother from Blaine rather than help him. The group then finally manages to escape together inside a laundry truck. However, instead of destroying Mother as they originally planned, they decide that their new mission is to rescue her, ending the episode.
The Boroughs (Season 1) Episode 8 ‘Triple Audible’ Recap:
Why does the group decide to save Mother?
The finale episode of The Boroughs (Season 1) picks up from the moment when Sam changes the group’s original plan. Instead of killing Mother, the group decide to help her escape. Wally even dresses Mother in regular clothes so they can secretly sneak her out during The Boroughs’ 75th anniversary celebration. However, security quickly notices that something is wrong, and soon Blaine and Annaliese gather people to hunt them down.
As the group continues escaping, they slowly learn that Mother does not actually want to keep living. Instead, she wants to finally die peacefully and end the endless cycle of suffering connected to both her and her children. Wally struggles to accept this and argues that Mother’s powers could help humanity defeat death itself. However, the others convince him that keeping her alive would only continue the pain for everyone involved.
The Boroughs (Season 1) Ending Explained:
Who dies in the end?
Mother eventually asks to be taken back to the caves where she was born so she can die beside her children. Meanwhile, Sam, Claire, Renee, and Wally escape through the underground tunnels while Judy and Art stay behind in order to distract Blaine and Annaliese. During the confrontation, Annaliese violently stabs Judy in the stomach after they refuse to reveal where Mother has gone. Eventually, Art gives them the truth in order to save Judy’s life.
At the same time, Renee and Paz head deeper underground to free Mother’s children from their cages. Hank, now angry after losing his position and authority, finally gives them the key they need to release them. Elsewhere, Blaine blocks the tunnels, forcing Sam and the others to abandon their escape route and hide inside Sam’s house instead. Back at the house, Sam and Claire use Sam’s television machines against Blaine and Annaliese. The televisions release a powerful burst of energy that completely destroys Annaliese. Although Blaine survives the attack, he is left badly weakened.
Will there be a season 2 of ‘The Boroughs’?
The ending of The Boroughs (Season 1) shows that nearby, Judy is close to dying from her stab wound, however, Mother gently places her hand over the injury and heals her completely. Deep inside the caves, Mother prepares to die beside her children at last. However, before everything can end peacefully, Blaine attacks Sam one final time. Moments later, Mother suddenly begins glowing brighter and brighter before exploding along with all of her children, killing Blaine and seemingly ending everything connected to The Boroughs once and for all.
Before dying, Mother gives Sam one final vision of Lily. Together, they finish their dance while listening to “Thunder Road” by Bruce Springsteen before Sam eventually wakes up alone inside the cave. The finale episode of The Boroughs (Season 1) ends with everyone safe and happy back at The Boroughs. However, the final scene quietly hints that Sam may not have fully survived the explosion after all, opening a new storyline for a possible The Boroughs (Season 2). Although ‘The Boroughs’ has not been renewed for Season 2 yet, but the Duffers’ strong relationship with Netflix makes an announcement feel highly likely.
