“About a Place in the Kinki Region” (Original title: “Kinki Chihô no Aru Basho ni Tsuite,” 2026) is an absurdist, found footage J-horror story. The film begins like a familiar found-footage mystery before slowly unfolding into something far stranger and more ambitious. The narrative follows freelance writer Chihiro and a desperate magazine editor named Ozawa as they attempt to track down a missing colleague.
Their only clues lie in a scattered collection of unsettling video clips—ranging from corrupt live streams to eerie folklore recordings from Japan’s Kinki region. Rather than relying on cheap jump scares, the film builds a slow-burning sense of malice, meticulously stitching together diverse internet phenomena and local myths into a singular, suffocating tapestry of terror.

About a place in the Kinki region (2026) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:
The film opens on the streets of Japan, where the citizens read news about bizarre things occurring in the country. It’s about curses, text messages that warn of death, and scary videos. Among them is a freelance writer, Chihiro, telling people that her friend is missing. We go back in time to see how we came to this situation. In a magazine office, Sayama is working on a feature story.
When Sayama’s colleague Ozawa asks him what the feature is about, Sayama does not reveal the details but asks Ozawa to look forward to it. After that, Sayama heads to the basement of the office to continue his work. While working, the lights start to flicker, and Sayama starts to hear noises and shadows move around. Suddenly, Sayama hears ‘Ooii,’ so he turns around to find a person standing. The person takes away one of Sayama’s eyeballs. Blood falls on the paper Sayama is holding.
What do found footage reveal?
A week later, Ozawa calls his friend Chihiro to ask for her help in figuring out and finishing Sayama’s job since he has gone missing. If Ozawa does not complete the feature, the Super Mystery Magazine will be shut down. Since Sayama has disappeared with the data for the feature, Ozawa and Chihiro need to look at the material Sayama has collected to compile the feature.
They head to the basement, where they find some reading material as well as videos. They start to watch videos together. The first video is of a young girl who went missing close to her house. A while later, the girl’s uncle jumped into a dam. One day, a passerby saw the little girl in the forest area, but her eye sockets were black. In the next video, they see school kids on a trip. At night, they hear ‘Ooii’ from the forest. One of the girls starts making fun of the sound. Suddenly, the girl falls to the ground.
In another video, they see a man visiting the Masaru shrine, which is a small shrine below the mountains. Inside the shrine, there are many dolls. At the end of the video, the man is seen lifting his hand, and ‘Ooii’ is heard in the background. The videos have connections for decades. In one box, Ozawa finds a USB with video footage of a streamer on Nico Nico.
One day, Nico Nico does a live stream in a haunted house. The house is dilapidated. On the second floor, there is a room that is locked, but Nico Nico breaks it open to find the ceiling covered with nooses. When Nico Nico opens a drawer, he finds a picture of a boy, which suddenly moves. There is also a red stain on the floor. Before disappearing, Nico Nico used to post on Twitter/X saying he was safe.
What are the paper charms found in the footage?

There is a video of Sayama’s interview with Meguro, where he admits to liking scary videos and sharing them with his friends. One day, Meguro shows a video with a warning that says if you watch this video, you will die to his friend Sato. After watching the video, Sato started to go into his shell before disappearing completely. In the video, Chihiro notices a paper charm; it is a drawing of a stick figure in front of a torii gate, and around the corners, letters written in kanji.
Overnight, Ozawa spends his time researching in the basement of the office. The next day, as Ozawa is watching scary footage, Chihiro arrives, scaring him. Now, Ozawa finds images on the internet posted by people from different regions that are the same as the paper charm found outside Sato’s house. The only difference is the kanji on the corners or the stick figure, either being a man or a woman. They discover that the haunted house is in Kinki.
In one footage in Kinki, they see two grandkids and a grandma move into an apartment complex (Danchi). The grandma is looking at the mountains in the distance, and suddenly, a woman falls from the floor above them to the ground, dying immediately. Fifteen years before this incident, a TV crew captured something in this same apartment complex. Many children play the game Mashira-sama, which is similar to tag.
When the person who is catching catches someone, that someone needs to offer the one tagging something. Once that is done, the round is over. Before starting to catch, the tagger says ‘Ooii.’ Before leaving the office, Chihiro asks Ozawa not to go and investigate anything alone. Meanwhile, Chihiro visits a medium called Morota to get a reading on the paper charm. When Morota sees the image, she freaks out, throws the phone, and sees a hand creeping out from behind Chihiro.
What’s the tale of Masaru?
Now Chihiro gets footage of the follow-up interview with Meguro. Here, Meguro talks about something he saw, which frightened him: an elementary school boy who had his neck completely backwards. So, Meguro visits a priest to get an exorcism done. The priest suddenly vomits and says he won’t be able to get rid of this spirit. However, the priest asks Meguro to keep raising living things.
That night, Ozawa finds a news report about the Hesebe family, who disappeared one night. In the report, Ozawa spots the paper charm. So, Ozawa visits the now closed shop and home and finds the paper charm still stuck to the window. The next day, the duo sees footage of a reporter interviewing schoolgirls about the latest trend. The one they recall is of a series of text messages that say if they don’t forward it to three people, then they will die. The girl in the video soon disappears.
After lunch, the duo visits Meguro, who is in a terrible state. Turns out Meguro has been trying to raise living things like different animals, and makes sure to replace one as soon as an animal is dead. One day, Meguro’s Killifish died. That day, a woman was seen on his balcony raising her hands. When Meguro tried to call the cops, the woman disappeared. Furthermore, the priest who was not raising any living things also died. However, Meguro believes Sayama is not missing but has run off. In the basement, Ozawa plays a folktale of Masaru-sama.
In a village, there was a boy, Masaru, who loved his mother. One day, the mother died, so Masaru cried all night. Suddenly, there was a burst of light. When Masaru checks, he sees God granting Masaru a wish. So, Masaru asks to be pampered by his mother, but God gives Masaru a persimmon, asking Masaru to get a wife to replace his mother. Whoever eats the persimmon can become Masaru’s wife. So Masaru’s screams from the mountain asking girls to eat the persimmon. However, no girls arrived. Eventually, Masaru dies of tiredness and without a wife.
What warning does Sayama give Ozawa?
Every time someone went up the mountain, they could hear Masaru. Since people got scared, they built a shrine. This connects to all the footage they have come across. That night, Ozawa gets a phone call, and as he receives it, a pen falls under a cabinet. After the call, Ozawa retrieves the pen but also finds the paper Sayama was holding before he disappeared. Later that night, Ozawa’s colleague finds him swinging around as if he were taken over by something. The possessed Ozawa thanks his colleague for finding him.
The next day, the colleague tells Chihiro about the incident. In Ozawa’s laptop, Chihiro finds Hesebe’s family’s location and arrives there. There, Ozawa is still possessed, so Chihiro slaps him and takes him home. At Chihiro’s house, Ozawa finds a picture of Chihiro’s dead son, Takumi. Now, Ozawa reveals that a writer had helped Sayama escape. So the duo rushes to find Sayama.

Now, Ozawa is recording everything from here. As soon as they open the door to Sayama’s cabin, they are met with a disgusting smell. Turns out it’s the smell of all the animals that have died. Suddenly, Sayama appears behind them. Soon, Sayama’s wife also arrives, but she is possessed, screaming and on all fours. Now, Sayama calls Chihiro a disgusting woman, as Ozawa will be her next target after Sayama, as Chihiro has been deceiving everyone.
As soon as Sayama says that, his wife falls on the fence. Before going out, Sayama gives Ozawa a USB. Then Sayama puts his empty socket through the fence, killing himself. In the car, the duo sees the footage on the USB. It is of Amano Iwayato, a religious cult-like group where people who have lost their loved ones come together. They pray to bring back their loved ones. In the video, there are many women, one of whom is Chihiro.
About a place in the Kinki region (2026) Movie Ending Explained:
Chihiro reveals that after her son was murdered, that’s why she was part of the group. One day, a stone suddenly appeared in the courtyard. Similarly, one day the stone vanished, making the organiser aggravated. That’s when the group disbanded. They now visit Danchi as the one who wrote the folktale is there. The woman shows them the room where the grandkids and the grandma lived.
From the woman, they learn that the stone was rumoured to have reappeared in the shrine again, so the duo head to Masaru’s shrine. On the way, Chihiro runs over these spirits as they were blocking their way. Now, Chihiro realises that whoever is in dire need, the stone appears to them. At the shrine, Chihiro throws away the dolls but can’t find the stone. So, Chihiro starts destroying the shrine. Suddenly, ‘Ooii’ is heard from inside the forest.
There is a tree in the middle of a waterbody. As they are looking, Chihiro thanks Ozawa for coming to her place. Behind Chihiro is the black stone. So, Chihiro says she is also in need. Now, Sayama’s words make sense to Ozawa. From the tree, an octopus-like, huge figure appears with many eyeballs. The eyeballs come rolling towards Ozawa, and they consume him whole and vanish inside the stone.
A minute later, a baby’s cry is heard. Currently, Chihiro asks people to help find her friend Ozawa, as he disappeared while they were conducting an investigation. A baby’s cry is heard on all phones. In the video, Chihiro brings the baby out to soothe its crying. In the last second, we see the baby start to have the same tentacle-like structure as the creature in the tree.
Unlike many found-footage horror films that revolve around discovering a single disturbing tape, this one has everything: folklore, investigative mystery, creeping dread, restrained jump scares, and genuinely strong storytelling layered with unexpected twists. The ending suggests that Chihiro had to make a series of sacrifices to bring her child back to life. But the child that returns no longer seems fully human; it feels more like a demon reborn. When the baby cries, the sound is heard through thousands of phones at once, implying that the curse tied to the black stone has now spread to everyone.
It mirrors the cursed video Meguro shows Sato earlier in the film — the one that condemns anyone who watches it to death. The baby’s cry appears to function in the same way, except this time there is no warning. By the end, Chihiro herself seems transformed, almost as if she has become a servant of the entity lurking within the forest. The film is undeniably absurd in the sheer number of ideas it blends together, yet it never feels chaotic. Instead, it leaves enough ambiguity for viewers to arrive at their own interpretations.
