If someone had said that Richard Gadd would follow his prime hit show “Baby Reindeer” with one about complex brotherly relationships, no one could’ve wrapped their heads around it. But what he has done with “Half Man” is nothing short of extraordinary. Created, written by, and starring himself in it, Richard Gadd has once again proven why he’s one of the layered artists in the business. The Scottish actor won six Emmy awards and two Golden Globes, among others, for his previous masterpiece, and it’s not an overstatement to state that he might take home a few with his latest creation as well.

On the surface, “Half Man” might look like another show about male relationships. But what makes it distinctive is how intensely and complicated the characters are written, defined by the performances of Jamie Bell and Richard Gadd. The six-part steamy British drama delivers from the get-go, and the tension never leaves the air in any episode. The show is embedded in its deep-rootedness and cultural commentary that makes or breaks relationships, and derives its success from arguing why such conversations are necessary and why the stereotypes surrounding non-straight relationships should cease to exist.

Half Man (TV Mini Series 2026) Episode 1 Recap:

The show opens at the wedding of Niall Kennedy (Jamie Bell), with him standing across his stepbrother Ruben Pallister (Richard Gadd) in a closed barn. The way Ruben sees Niall suggests they share a very dark history, one that leaves indelible scars. Niall wants Ruben to leave him alone since it’s his wedding, but Ruben is not ready to. He laughs menacingly, hugs his little brother, and teases him psychosexually. Suddenly screaming in wrath, he lands two stone-cold punches on Niall, rendering him almost unconscious. The camera cuts to a flashback of Niall getting bullied at school.

We see that a couple of boys are harassing a young Niall (Mitchell Robertson), calling him homophobic slurs and pressing him against a classroom wall. The boys return to their seats when a professor walks in. He announces that Ruben Pallister will be joining them soon, triggering panic in Niall. When he is picked up by his mom, Lori (Neve McIntosh), after school, he finds out that the news is true and gets advised to share his room with Ruben. It seems that Ruben’s mother, Maura (Marianne McIvor), has been living in Niall’s house, and she hasn’t seen her son in two years. And Ruben has only been recently released from juvenile prison for biting off a man’s nose.

Niall feels that Maura has overstayed her welcome, which was supposed to be only six months, but Lori doesn’t want to hear her son’s complaints. The relationship between Lori and Maura is unclear, but it’s evident that they are more than “just friends”. Ruben is already home when Niall reaches, and their interaction signals that they’ve had an awkward relationship when they were much younger. Ruben appears macho, cunning, and threatening, so Niall obeys him to avoid trouble.

At night, when both Ruben and Niall are trying to sleep, they hear a man shouting in the street. Ruben realises that it’s his estranged father in a drunken state, asking him to move back with him. Niall is alerted and suggests waking up his mom, but Ruben grabs him in a choke and warns against it. Back at home, Lori and Maura persuade Niall to convince his big brother to take the prelims. Niall tries to have a talk with his brother upstairs, but the latter doesn’t engage.

The next day, Ruben arrives at the prelims late and causes a scene, which ends in him storming out of the exam hall. When the professors and staff follow him outside, Niall picks up his brother’s paper from the floor and fills in the answers, leaving it in its place just before the supervisors arrive. Later, we get to know that Ruben has passed, and Maura thanks him for it.

That night, when he’s trying to sleep, Niall hears a girl’s voice in his room coming through the window, along with Ruben. It appears to be someone named Mona who is kissing Ruben. Ruben catches Niall gawking at them secretly, so he wakes him up and urges Mona to get on top of Niall. Niall gets aroused, and Mona has sex with him.

It’s obvious that the intercourse has awakened something in Niall. He feels vibrant, and Ruben admits that Mona was a “thank-you gift” for helping him out in his prelims, which he reveals to have figured out. The episode ends with the present Niall lying unconscious on the barn floor and Ruben proceeding to put him out of his misery.

Half Man (TV Mini Series 2026) Episode 2 Recap:

Episode two rewinds a little bit and picks up from Niall getting ready for his wedding. He is informed by his mother that Ruben will be arriving, that she’s invited him. Niall is shocked to hear this as he can’t believe his mother. He slowly walks out and sees Ruben. Looking at Niall, Ruben does a shooting gesture with his hands, as the narrative takes us back to the times that defined their broken relationship. It is 1989, and Niall is now entering college as Lori drops him off at the hostel in Glasgow. She doesn’t want Niall to call his brother, which he assures her he won’t do, and adds that he can take care of himself.

Three flatmates — Joanna (Julie Cullen), Celeste (Philippine Velge), and Alby (Bilal Hasna) welcome Niall, with the former two remarking to Niall that Alby might be gay. The girls take Niall clubbing, with Celeste even showing some interest in him. But seeing Alby standing alone, Niall goes up to him and makes a connection. They both bond well, and we get the idea that Niall is queer, as he can’t resist catching feelings for Alby. Unable to process his feelings, Niall gets drunk and blacks out. Alby brings him to the hostel and tucks him in. Embarrassed about all this, Niall gets cold feet and calls Ruben, saying that he needs him.

The next day, Ruben arrives, and the girls fall in love with him literally, though Celeste initially labels him as a “troublemaker”. Niall hasn’t told his brother that he is gay, fearing the worst that could happen. They all go clubbing again, joined by Ruben this time. Upon hearing Niall’s relationship with Ruben, Alby doesn’t bite his words and says that Ruben is a negative influence. Alby and Niall hug when they are watching a movie together. The moment doesn’t last long as Niall takes off when he hears the voice of Ruben in the hallway.

The following day, Niall finds Ruben and Celeste high on substances in the hostel kitchen, which has been turned upside down. Joanna enters the room and threatens to call the police on Ruben. He leaves the room because he’s afraid of cops. Niall cleans up the mess and opens up to Alby about his feelings. Alby reassures Niall, stating that since their mothers are also queer people, his own sexual orientation will not be a big deal. Niall replies that since the perception differs for everyone, he is afraid to come out of his closet. Alby understands that Niall’s confusion and dread is majorly due to Ruben and advises speaking to him directly about it.

At a cafe, Niall makes a huge blunder, starting the conversation with Ruben’s dad, which sets him off. Failing to read the situation, Niall confronts Ruben about how he treated Celeste. When Ruben is told to leave them all alone, he pulls Niall by his shirt and mentions that he will stay in the hostel as long as he wants to.

Niall lies to Alby, saying that the conversation went well. Alby almost believes Niall’s words, but when he inquires with Ruben, he finds out the truth and gets irritated. Watching this, Ruben becomes a hothead and brutally pounds on Alby. Niall stands there, totally blanked out, riddled with anxiety. We then see Ruben getting arrested, doing the shooting hand gesture to Niall. Cut to the wedding in the present, we witness that Niall is marrying Alby (Charlie de Melo) as he still has those scars from Ruben’s beatdown after all these years.

Half Man (TV Mini Series 2026) Episode 3 Recap:

Episode three resumes where Niall and Alby are fretting over Ruben’s presence on their wedding day. Cut to Niall’s graduation day, we find out that Alby was in a coma for six months post the infamous incident and hasn’t been in touch with Niall since. Ruben has been involved in community work, looking after kids. Niall has college interviews lined up, with even one from Oxford. Also, Niall and Joanna have been in a relationship.

Apparently, Alby has pressed charges against Ruben when he regained consciousness from his coma, the case has been dragging on for four years, and now Lori is persuading Niall to vouch for him in court. Her bona fide reason is that his big brother has changed because he’s done community service. Niall thinks that if he doesn’t defend his brother, Ruben might threaten to out his queerness and his relationship with Alby.

So, he does the predictable. He goes to his brother and inquires about his demands. Ruben wants Niall to lie in court, stating that Alby attempted to grope Ruben during the altercation and the beatdown was an act of self-defence. As bizarre as this sounds, Niall is confused whether the court will believe such a cooked-up story.

Niall goes to his mother angrily and reveals Ruben’s stipulations. When she doesn’t act surprised, Niall figures out that she already is aware of this. Furious, he tries to explain the consequences of such lies, but in vain. Instead of contemplating this situation rationally, Niall goes to the pub with his college mates and makes his relationship with Joanna official. Joanna senses that something is off, now that Niall wants to move in with her, so she asks him the immediate recent cause for this development. He bluntly says that if he gets selected at Oxford, he will move on, but if he doesn’t, he will stay with her.

Niall visits the community centre where Ruben is working and gets impressed by his brother’s progress. When Ruben claims he’s actually interested in community service, Niall almost believes him. When Niall returns home after his Oxford interview, Lori says that Maura is suffering from cancer, and if Niall doesn’t back Ruben in court, the latter will not be able to see his mother for ten years. This news makes Niall melt and feel pity for his brother. The significance of Lori requesting this from her son shows how her love for her partner, Maura, clouds her judgment. The disclosure of this huge amount of information convinces Niall to switch sides as he makes up his mind to lie in court.

Joanna learns about Niall’s plans of lying and confronts him upright. She says that he has to face his sexuality, describing the horrible state Alby is currently in. Joanna has visited Alby, seemingly, which even Niall has failed to do. She calmly says that she knows Niall doesn’t completely love her, but that’s not the bigger problem here. She turns selfless and wants Niall to do the right thing. Furthermore, she shows him his Oxford acceptance letter, communicating that this is his opportunity to restart his life.

The following day, Niall arrives in the court and sees Alby for the first time since the incident. His face contains deep scars from the brutal assault, and that makes Niall do the impossible. He doesn’t lie for Ruben, which enrages the latter. We return to the present day, where Ruben has the mic, calling in a toast. He announces that he’s happy for the couple and states that he wishes to retell a story about Niall.

Half Man (TV Mini Series 2026) Episode 4 Recap:

Episode four is where the heat gets turned up, if it hasn’t already. Ruben narrates an incident from his childhood where he and Niall were playing hide and seek during Ruben’s birthday, and Niall tricked him into hiding for a prolonged time to dig into Ruben’s cake. We again cut to a flashback where Niall is having sex with a man inside the back of a car, with four people watching and deriving pleasure from their sight. We learn that Niall published his first novel a few years ago but hasn’t been able to keep his career afloat since. The quality of his writing has gone down, and currently, he doesn’t have the money to even buy books from a library.

He is hitherto struggling with his sexuality and started hooking up with random dudes. He gets caught by the librarian for having sex in the library restroom, who asks him for a bribe to shove it under the rug. Through an ex-college mate, Niall discovers that Ruben has been released from jail. When he arrives at Lori’s and brings this matter up, she confirms it. Niall is worried that his big brother might come up to him randomly and derail his life. But Lori adds that Ruben got released two years ago, and if he hasn’t gotten in touch with Niall still, there is nothing to be concerned about.

Niall meets up with Joanna (Kate Robson-Stuart) and asks her about Ruben. She confides that Ruben came to meet her. Ruben told her that he’s meeting all the people he’s hurt in the past to apologise to them. Niall is confused as to why he didn’t get an apology since he has hurt him the most. We get to know from Joanna that Niall dropped out of Oxford because he claimed not to like the environment there.

But we know that’s not the real reason. Niall goes back to his apartment and stalks Ruben online. He is astonished to see that his stepbrother, who made his life miserable, is doing well and living a lavish life with a bumper salary, while he’s practically unemployed and having arbitrary sex in public spaces. Couldn’t get over the fact that his life has turned from good to worse, Niall does the unthinkable and arrives at Ruben’s place.

He watches his house from inside his car, recognizes Mona (Amy Manson) — the same Mona to whom he lost his virginity in episode one, as she’s now married to Ruben, and envies his lifestyle. Lori informs Niall that Ruben was the one who took care of Maura when he got released from prison. Maura attempted suicide, and that caused her permanent brain damage, leaving her in a catatonic state. Niall is ashamed to hear all this, his guilt eating him alive from the inside.

To gather money to pay off the librarian, Niall goes to his mother, who refuses at first but suggests asking Ruben. Lori then mentions that Ruben has been lending her money during times of struggle. This causes Niall to completely question everything Ruben’s paid for. And when the answer to it is basically all the things Lori’s provided for Niall, he realises that his stepbrother owns him. Filled with jealousy, Niall vandalizes Ruben’s car. The alarm goes off, and Ruben comes storming down. Niall manages to hide and almost avoids getting caught. When he returns to his car and drives off, he catches Ruben staring at him like a hawk. In the blink of an eye, Niall crashes into a truck.

Waking up in a hospital bed, Niall notices Ruben in the room. The brothers have an overlong conversation about how they ruined each other’s lives. This epic showdown has some of the finest performances by Richard Gadd and Jamie Bell. Ruben reminds Niall that the only time the latter has felt worthy of himself is when he was around; otherwise, his life is just trash filled with meaningless moments. Niall retorts back saying Ruben has just wrecked his whole life, and the scars left by him make it excruciating for him to move forward. The brothers look at themselves, each containing fragments of the other’s pain.

Niall explains the money situation he’s in now, and Ruben agrees to lend him money if he apologizes for everything. Niall shoots himself in the foot once again and obliges. Ruben also says he’s sorry as the brothers hug it out. Cut to the present, the barn gate is opened and out comes a stretcher containing a body covered in sheets. When Lori opens the sheets, it is Ruben who is lying dead, which has everyone dumbfounded.

Half Man (TV Mini Series 2026)

Half Man (TV Mini Series 2026) Episode 5 Recap:

After that shocking ending, episode five turns the clock back to the past. We see that Niall is in a relationship with a woman named Ava (Anjli Mohindra) who’s pregnant. At the hospital, Niall asks an unusual question to the doctor: Whether the pregnancy is a phantom (fake). The couple then discusses their decision to raise the baby, to which Niall says he isn’t sure at the moment.

They both meet Ruben and Mona for a double date, which ends abruptly as the duo behaves in an animated way. Before Niall and Ava start home, Ruben has a private conversation with his stepbrother. He’s lent him 30k and asks it back. Niall replies that his book is almost over, he’s figuring out the ending, and requests six more months of time. Ruben replies he can’t wait that long. Niall doesn’t want Ava to overhear their conversation since he borrowed another 30k from her, under the guise of paying Ruben.

Hearing this, Ruben puts forward a verbal agreement with two conditions. Ruben is suspicious of a man in Mona’s dance classes named Benji, and he wants Niall to keep an eye on him. The second condition is that Ruben wants Niall to also work as his house cleaner, in exchange for allowing him to pay in instalments. Niall is at the mercy of Ruben, so he doesn’t have any other options other than to obey. We see Niall join Mona’s dancing class to keep tabs on her. Niall has a dialogue with Mona, and when the topic of Ava’s pregnancy comes up, she reveals that Ruben may be jealous because he’s infertile. This weirdly feels like a personal win for Niall.

Later, when he is asked by Ruben about Mona and Benji, Niall divulges that he saw them hugging, while also revealing that Ava is pregnant. The second news makes Ruben happy, while the first one does not. When Ruben pesters him about the money, Niall questions his intentions and points out whether he’s putting pressure on him just because Ava’s pregnant. This throws off Ruben as he realises that Mona has told his secret. This angers him, and he storms off in a terrifying mood.

Upon following, Niall sees that Ruben has sacked Mona from his house. She is standing outside, helpless, with tears falling down her cheeks. Ruben asks her to collect her things and get out. After making himself clear, he drives off, stating that he needs to go on a business trip. While Niall is pacifying Mona, he kisses her, which ends in them having sex.

When Ava asks about his deal with Ruben, Niall reveals that she spent her 30k on “straightening out” courses. This worries Ava, but she soothes a sobbing Niall, who breaks down and feels ashamed that he can’t feel proud in his own skin since modern society better accepts straight men. Ava consoles him and advises him to seek professional help.

In the middle of all this, Niall is still unsure whether he wants to have a baby, which we later find out didn’t happen. Niall tries to contact Ruben using the number on his business card, but finds out that it is fake. When he gets a lead on where Ruben might be, he goes there and meets him. Ruben says that he was let go from his job a year ago, but he can’t afford to disclose this to Mona. He has been faking his business trips and lending money to people by maxing out his credit cards. He simply says he “liked” loaning people money because it gave him a sense of control.

Later, when Niall goes up to Mona, asking her not to tell Ruben about their sex, she laughs out and reveals that Ruben’s micro-managing has pushed her into Benji’s arms. Ruben comes to Niall’s home that night, asking about Mona, questioning whether things have escalated between her and Benji. Niall doesn’t explicitly say it out loud, but gives a clue that they could have possibly kissed.

This fraction of a confirmation is enough to set off Ruben as he stomps away with uncontrollable rage. Niall goes after him and sees his car parked outside Benji’s house. Running in, he sees that Ruben has decimated Benji and won’t stop stamping on his deformed face. Seeing Ruben’s face covered in blood and Benji’s unconscious body on the floor, Niall’s legs give way.

Half Man (TV Mini Series 2026) Episode 6 Recap:

The final episode opens a few minutes before Ruben lands his blows on Niall. The big brother asks whether Niall loves him and demands an honest answer. Niall replies that he loves him in every part of his body, and since he has always had trouble coming to terms with his sexuality, his love for his stepbrother gave him a high that drugs can’t replicate. Ruben then brings up Mona, indicating that he knows about the sex with his wife. The camera cuts to the past to give us all the remaining answers.

Three years have gone by since Benji’s incident, who has survived, while Ruben has gone to prison once more. Meanwhile, Niall’s book, which has masculine identity as its core theme, has been published and has emerged as an instant hit. In a Q&A session with the press, every journalist inquires Niall whether the themes of the book and its characters are based on his personal relationship with his brother. Niall doesn’t like it when no one asks about the writing process or about him. Later, when he visits Ruben in prison, he fills him in on how people are viewing his book as a biography. Ruben laughs and reminds him that he has been the main character in Niall’s life.

Mona and Ruben’s relationship is in a complex stage where she has a child named Baird and visits him regularly. Since Ruben is infertile, it’s implied that the child is of Niall’s. But at the moment, Ruben thinks that he was able to make Mona conceive, so technically, he doesn’t know the truth. Ruben is still heavily pissed off at Benji and swears that he’ll finish him off when he comes out. Niall goes to Mona and asks her not to reveal to Ruben about their child, at any stage. Contrastingly, Mona is feeling lonely and is actually contemplating getting back together with Ruben. Niall asks her to drop that idea altogether if she wants both of them to live.

Niall’s identity issues have reached rock bottom as he has been hooking up with random men in a place disguised as a natural spa. Having unprotected sex has been deteriorating his health. When he arrives home, he sees Maura on her deathbed, drawing her final breaths. They take her to the hospital, and while he’s there, Niall bumps into Alby. They go to a restaurant nearby and chat about how their lives have turned out. Alby is surprised to hear that Niall is still struggling with his identity.

The next day, Niall breaks the news about Maura’s death to Ruben. He feels livid that a random guy like Benji is the reason he was not able to be with his mother during her final days. The visit ends in the guards dragging away Ruben, constantly shouting and screaming that he’ll kill Benji for ruining his life. Later, Maura’s funeral ceremony takes place, and Ruben is accompanied by a guard to attend the event. His eulogy for his mother is a sore tearjerker as he breaks down and talks about how he could’ve been a better son.

Niall sees Mona with her son there. He meets with her privately and stresses to keep away from Ruben. When Ruben catches them mumbling, the duo is dumbstruck. He presses them to reveal the subject, but his parole guard takes him away. Alby urges Niall to break his identity to Ruben since it’s been forever, and he needs to come out of his shell. On his next visit, when Ruben pesters about what Niall and Mona were arguing about the other day, Niall blurts out that he is bisexual, but mainly, he is gay.

Ruben falls silent for a second and repeatedly confirms what he heard. When Ruben laughs and replies that he’s always had his suspicions, it distresses Niall. Ruben casually mentions that it’s not a big deal and wishes he had known it sooner. Stunned by how lightly Ruben has taken this, Niall’s heart fills with regret. Ruben drops a controversial, undeniable truth that the biggest homophobe in Niall’s life was only himself. These words pierce through Niall’s heart and hit him like a train as he can’t help feeling worse, pondering about how he’s wasted his life seeking the validation of others.

At the end, Ruben points out that he feels proud of his brother’s identity. This opens the floodgates for Niall as he starts crying. Ruben reveals that his father treated him poorly in his childhood, and that one time he even sexually assaulted him. His voice breaks as Niall consoles him, saying his big brother has been his hero always. The brothers then harmoniously laugh about their dark moments and engage in confessing truths.

When it looks like they are finally bonding and patching up, Niall gets carried away and says that he had sex with Mona, and Baird is actually his son. Hearing this, Ruben’s smile disappears, and we see him turning back into the beast. The camera cuts to the present, where Niall is lying on the floor. Ruben tries to choke out Niall and end his life. Niall retaliates by sticking Ruben with a knife, but that unfortunately doesn’t save him. After he’s accomplished what he came to do, Ruben catches his breath, finds his feet, and looks at Niall’s body lying lifeless as the camera cuts to black.

Half Man (TV Mini Series 2026) Ending Explained:

Did Ruben Succumb To His Injuries?

After that dark ending, one might wonder whether Ruben actually died since we saw him on a stretcher covered in sheets at the end of episode four. It is only natural to think that his wounds were too strong and he never sought help because he must’ve felt like he had nothing more to live for. His temper got the best of him every time, and he allowed his anger to dictate his life. In a really heartbreaking way, Ruben could’ve realized that without Niall, his life is incomplete. Their lives have always been tightly knit together with so much shared history and repressed emotions that it essentially reached a stage where one can’t exist without the other.

The brotherly relationship emphasizes the meaning of the title “Half Man,” as they have always been a single soul dwelling in two different bodies. The overarching exploration of unresolved trauma stemming from dysfunctional family dynamics showcases the significance of proper care that every child needs. The need for inclusivity and the openness to call out toxic relationships is much needed, for it is the need of the hour. Niall punished himself throughout the show because he couldn’t accept himself, despite being intelligent, and that says something about the world, too.

One can safely conclude that Half Man is a necessary show. In a sea of films and shows made for the sake of representation, the show succeeds because Richard Gadd stays true to the craft and produces character arcs that feel starkly realistic. The accurate depiction of queerness and how society alienates and makes them feel vulnerable couldn’t have been done better. At its outset, “Half Man” might sound like a show with mainstream storylines, but the defiant approach and the intense characterizations make it an unmissable watch.
