Mayor of Kingstown (Season 2) Episode 6 Recap:
Episode 6: Left with the Nose
In the previous episode, Mike (Jeremy Renner) goes to jail to meet Bunny (Tobi Bamtefa). While he wants to bring Bunny out of prison, Bunny is tired of him not living up to his promises. That’s why he is determined to help. On his way back to the cell, Bunny gets dragged by some prison guards and gets thrown into solitary confinement. While that is bound to impact his mental state, Mike also gets infuriated by this new development. He is dead set on finding who is behind this nasty attempt at silencing him.
To get to the bottom of the inmates’ anger, Mike starts from the basics. He goes to the Warwick group office and brings up the subject of inmates being used as free labor for factories, which benefits their corporation. So, he asks for a favor from Wendy (Sandrine Holt) and offers his services to get Bunny’s papers signed by the DA. Wendy can do this since she can fund DA’s re-election costs in exchange for it. So, she accepts this deal.
Meanwhile, Big Hush (Jock McKissic), Rafael (D Smoke), and two other black inmates talk about Bunny’s present condition in prison. That’s when they see a guard thrashing a white inmate. This is the same guard who took Bunny to solitary confinement. The inmate manages to escape and goes on to kill one of the black convicts with a knife. Big Hush and Rafael avenge this murder by thrashing this man. The guards intervene only then and use pepper spray to stop the fight. So, it becomes clear that some guards cooperate with racially motivated white inmates.
Right after, Kareem (Michael Beach) calls Mike’s office and mentions that Bunny needs to be released the same day since he’s concerned for Bunny’s safety. He informs the racial biases that are driving the increasing prison violence. So, Mike asks him to trace the people who are running this operation and to manage a meeting between him and Bunny.
Meanwhile, Kyle (Taylor Handley) seems to be going through a rough patch due to not having any work to do. He even starts building sheds in their backyard. Tracy (Nishi Munshi) sees it as his unemployment taking a toll on him, who is, of course, worried.
Mike goes to meet Ian (Hugh Dillon), Kyle, and Robert (Hamish Allan-Headley). Robert notes getting a heart attack letter, where he is being implicated in a crime. They discuss who might have breached the information. Mike thinks it is not the DA but someone from the SWAT team that rolled on him. He wants Robert to find this person. During their conversation, Kareem texts Mike the details for his meeting with Bunny with a CO’s name (Davidson – the one who thrashed Bunny).
Mike leaves with Kyle, who brings a duffel bag to his car. He reveals that it has the bonds that were stolen. Apparently, it was Kyle, not Milo (Aidan Gillen), who stole them by bribing the security guard. Mike warns him to alert him or others from their team before pulling off a stunt like this.
Then, Mike goes to Davidson’s (Matt Gerald) place and threatens him to leave Bunny alone. Davidson thinks of it as a request, but Mike mentions it is an order. He takes it on his ego and whips Mike. That’s when Kyle leaves the car and hits Davidson with a gun. He warns this guard to act according to Mike’s suggestion for his own good. Then, Mike tells him to send Bunny to a general prison from solitary confinement.
Kyle returns home drunk and finds Marianne (Dianne Wiest) and Ian (Hugh Dillon) having a dialogue. She notices that Kyle is drunk and asks Ian for some time alone with him. First, building the sheds, then returning home drunk – she sees it as her son not being able to manage the stress of unemployment.
The next day, Bunny is brought back to the general prison as Mike wanted. Then the guard takes him to meet Mike outside the prison, who informs him that he is getting moved to another jail the same day. Bunny finds it impossible to trust him due to him not living up to his promises in the recent past. While Mike did not take care of him as he should have, Bunny moved a target on Mike to someone else. However, he refuses to tell who the next target is. Mike senses that Bunny isn’t going to trust him blindly like before and tells him to do whatever he wants to.
While these two go through a crisis of trust, Marianne continues her charitable duty of meeting juvenile inmates. She walks into the facility to speak with Jacob (Jake Schur), who wants her to get Mike’s help to get him out. He worries for his safety in the last year of his prison and does not want it to continue. Miriam assures her that she will speak with Mike about it.
While DA Lockett and his assistant Evelyn are having a meal, Mike interrupts them to speak about his deal with Bunny. Lockett isn’t the least bit concerned, even if it means danger for him. Mike knows that but rather makes the DA scared about Milo’s highly likely escape during the prison riot. DA still naively assumes that Milo got shot on that day. Mike warns him otherwise. Still, he does not see his duty but that of the DOC (department of the correctional facility).
Mike understands that the blame will fall upon the DA since common people do not care about the nitty-gritty and blame the well-known face. So, Mike threatens to tarnish Lockett’s public image if he does not cooperate in this deal. He also knows that Evelyn knows about Milo’s escape, which can backfire on Lockett down the line. While Mike storms out after giving the DA food for thought, Evelyn does not utter a single word during this interaction.
Mayor of Kingstown (Season 2), Episode 6 Ending, Explained:
Does Mike finally manage to rescue Bunny?
Prison guard Carney approaches Kareem about the death of the tent city prisoner that Kareem beat up. Since it will make Kareem the clear target for murder, he offers to falsify details in the report. Kareem understands his reasoning to back it up and keeps the report to himself.
In prison, Bunny starts working again in the factory. His dialogue with Raphael gets interrupted by Gunner (leader of a white racist group of inmates). He tells Bunny about the man who attacked Big Hush before and points toward him in the factory. Gunner mentions that this man was a lone wolf, acting according to the orders of Davidson. So, he offers to speed up his kill. Within a matter of moments, the attacker’s hands are chopped off by their machinery.
Meanwhile, Mike goes to the place where he always used to meet Bunny for their negotiations. He meets one of his associates, who gives him an update about the businesses around them. Then he takes him to the rooftop – the same one where Bunny started sitting from the fear of getting killed before going to prison. The place is quiet since Bunny is not there.
Does the DA sign the papers for Bunny’s rescue?
That’s when Mike gets a call from the prison. Bunny picks up from the other side and mentions that the path has been cleared. Mike has no idea what that means. Yet, Bunny asks Mike to get the DA to sign the deal and get him out right then, as he promised. While Mike tries to process this request emotionally, the DA gets shot to death in a parking lot. So it looks like the DA cannot sign the papers as Mike wanted.
So, like every other episode, we are presented with the bleakness of Kingstown’s future. Because of DA’s death, Bunny’s rescue is still under question. Will he still manage to get out? Only the next episode can tell.
