Silo (Season 1), Episode 7 Recap:
“The Flamekeepers”
The episode opens with Gloria imagining a lovely day at the beach with her family when the nurse enters and consoles her about what she is feeling. She gives her a sedative that brings her back to her present state as a patient, and her imagination of the water dissolves into thin air. Meanwhile, Jules is flipping through the magazine she discovered and stumbles on the names – Gloria, Anne, and George. Something pushes her towards looking into George’s file again, and when she discovers the mention of Gloria in it, she decides to pursue that clue.
The people monitoring Jules through the cameras raise a concern about her taking the magazine (a relic) and the files outside her boarding, and we see Simms appear as their supervisor.
Back at the office, Jules receives a prompt about her search for Gloria’s detail on her computer. While she prepares to leave for the Medical Unit, Deputy Billings arrives and tells her about the messages he has received for her. While one is from maintenance, the other is a summons from the Mayor. Jules decides to blow it off and instead pursue her investigation, leaving Billings in charge again.
Jules visits Gloria, and even though the nurse is not very receptive and helpful, she gets in and tries to take Gloria out of her room for a walk. She sees her talking about the water, and despite the nurse’s confirmation that Gloria suffers from hallucinations, Jules feels that there’s more to it and tries to take her out anyway. It is when the nurse points out that Judge Meadows has instructed explicitly that Gloria is not allowed to go out.
Jules then decides to see Judge Meadows and switches off her radio in case anyone tries to make contact. When her visit to the Judicial is unsuccessful due to Judge Meadow’s absence because of her sickness, she returns. However, Billings is forced to take charge in the meantime because a huge fight erupts on the 26th floor. When he and the other deputies try to stop it, some get injured, and the station is in chaos when Jules returns.
Billings her into the office and confronts her about the absence. Jules confesses openly that she took the post of Sheriff to find the reason behind George’s death which is connected to all the other murders that took in the Silo. Billings understands but also tells her he can’t always cover for her and that she needs to take her duties seriously.
Lucas meets Jules again at the cafeteria as she looks at the stars. The two introspect about them and how long they have been there. Lucas also tells her that he works in the IT department. All that talk leads to them having a moment which leads Lucas to try and kiss Jules. However, Jules instantly feels dejected and pulls away, making the moment awkward for both of them, and leaves.
Jules then visits Mayor Bernard, who tells her that Judge Meadows had warned him about taking Jules’ side when Simms tried to pin her for planting evidence. He also tells her the importance of the IT department and how its servers keep the Silo in balance. He confesses that he feels Judge Meadows might take some aggressive steps to ruin that balance, and the two should be more careful about things in the future.
The next day, Jules visits Judge Meadows at her home to get her permission to take Gloria out. Sick with a cold, Judge Meadows is not very responsive to her requests and indirectly tells her that putting Gloria in a drugged state is not her call. She refers to ‘them’ as the ones who make the decision, leaving Jules angry about her being just a face behind the façade.
With no other way around it, Jules decides to go to her father for help. While initially apprehensive, he chooses to help her. He secretly goes into the medical during the night shift and brings a heavily sedated Gloria out of her room and into the nursery. Since she is under the influence of drugs, Dr. Pete decides to give Gloria an anti-sedative, leading to a mini seizure but later neutralizing.
At the janitorial, the camera operators lose sight of Jules as she tries to go to the Medical. It angers Simms, and he tells them to trace her at any cost.
Silo (Season 1), Episode 7 Ending, Explained:
Who are the flamekeepers?
At the nursery, Gloria wakes up after the anti-sedative but is upset by seeing Dr. Nichols there. She blames him for working with ‘them’ and enabling their intentions of not allowing her to have a baby. Jules is frightened to hear that and asks her father to leave so that she can talk to Gloria alone. While Gloria is not too eager to speak to a stranger, on seeing the relic (the magazine), good memories wash past her. She decides to tell her more and talks about how they have been messing up with the water, leading to the slow decay of their memories before the Silo. She refers to herself and a few others as the ‘flamekeepers.’ People who knew of their past before the Silo and rebelled against their rules about relics and other essential things from their past so that it is easier to write over their memories with new ones. She tells her that the magazine belongs to her and that she gave it to Anne (George’s mother), who passed very early.
While talking, Jules’ mother’s name comes up, and Gloria tells her she was surprised that ‘they’ allowed a woman of her caliber to have children. Jules then confronts her father about his cowardice in giving people false hope of having children while keeping their birth control intact instead of taking it out. He tells her he did it because he believed that ‘they’ had a greater cause for it and betraying their trust would lead to dire consequences. His justification doesn’t stand of any value in front of Jules, who feels that he didn’t just betray her mother but many others like her because he was too scared to take a stand.
What does Jules discover about the mirrors?
Jules then takes Gloria back to her room, allowing the janitorial people to see her again. In her room, Gloria requests Jules to show her the magazine again while noticing that her flowers are gone. She tells Jules that Sheriff Holston had brought those flowers and kept them right in front of the mirror before working on the vent in the room. Realizing that there is some connection between the mirrors and the flowers – looking back at the note she received, Jules realizes that the mirrors are how ‘they’ can see them. She then covers the mirror using a cloth, alerting Simms about her knowledge of the cameras. Simms is furious that she knows about the cameras and sends a team to get her. Meanwhile, Jules gets into the vent and finds the hard drive that she has been looking for all this time.
