Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the 2024 horror thriller movie “Abigail” centers on the kidnapping of a young girl named Abigail. Things start to fall apart right after the kidnappers learn about the father of the abducted girl. Starring Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, and Giancarlo Esposito, the film skillfully balances its elements until it reaches the climax. However, the plot feels somewhat repetitive and unnecessarily prolonged at times. Despite this, it remains an enjoyable watch for fans of vampire stories. Alisha Weir delivers a standout performance as Abigail, showcasing remarkable nuance and subtlety in her dialogue. Her portrayal alone makes the film worth viewing.

Abigail (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

The movie starts with Abigail practicing her ballet while her house is being invaded by 6 kidnappers. When Abigail comes back from the practice, they kidnap her. Before Abigail’s father can stop the kidnappers, they leave the place. Later, we meet with the leader. Lambert, who has hired these kidnappers. Lambert says that no one is going to use their real name, and within 24 hours, when Abigail’s father pays 50 million dollars, their job will be over. Joey is tasked with interacting with Abigail, who is still sleeping due to the drug.

Soon after, Abigail tells Joey that she is sorry about what is going to happen to the kidnappers, which makes her very scared. Joey asks Frank about Abigail’s father and whether he is a very violent man. Subsequently, Frank goes to talk to Abigail. He does not know that Abigail’s blindfold is removed by Joey so she sees his face. Frank learns that Abigail’s father is Kristof Lazaar and he decides to leave right at that very moment. When Joey asks the reason he says that Kristof Lazaar is basically a crime lord and no one should mess with him.

What happens to Dean and Rickles?

When the rest of the crew learns about Kristof Lazaar, they all seem to be frightened by the name. They know Lazaar has a hitman named Valdez who has done impossible things to get to his enemies. But, since it is a question of millions of dollars, they decide to stay and secure the parameters. Later that night, when Dean hears something from the kitchen, he goes to look out for it. Suddenly, he is confronted with something. Hearing Dean’s screams, Sammy comes looking for him and finds that his head is cut off from his body.

The kidnappers assemble, and they start to look for Valdez. As right at this moment, Abigail tells Joey that Frank is Valdez. Joey shares this news with Rickles, and since they both have military backgrounds, together they decide to put an end to this by killing Frank. Moments after this, Joey finds out that someone or something has killed Rickles. She confronts Frank while he tells Joey that Abigail is trying to take advantage of the situation by turning them against each other. Frank, being the leader of the group, asks Peter to take care of Abigail.

When Peter is about to shoot Abigail, Joey interferes, and there is a spat between Peter, Joey, and Frank. Meanwhile, Sammy witnesses that Abigail is quite easily removing herself from the handcuffs, and suddenly, she takes a ballet position. Before they can realize what is happening, Abigail turns herself into a vampire and bites Sammy. Somehow, they manage to escape. Frank realizes that all the stories about Valdez’s impossible assassinations are true because Abigail is Valdez, and she is a vampire.

Sammy is concerned about whether she will turn into a vampire or not, while the others plan on how to kill a vampire. Joey tells Frank that Abigail is too clever to be killed that easily because she has already killed Dean and Rickles. Frank, however, decides to move along with the plan. But soon, he, Peter, and Sammy come back injured. Abigail could have easily killed them. However, she is only playing with them until she decides that their time is over. Joey says that only the drug was effective before, so they plan to inject the drug once again.

Is the Whole Kidnapping thing a Trap?

Right after Dean’s death, when Rickles tried to escape the place, it completely locked itself automatically. They doubted at that time that the kidnapping might have been a setup. However, after Rickles’ death and Abigail turning into a vampire, they are more than sure that someone has plotted this thing against them. But they do not know the reason behind this. Anyway, Joey is able to inject the drug into Abigail, which makes her sleep for a while. They cage her inside a lift as Abigail regains consciousness and explains everything.

She says that Lambert, who hired all of them, works for Abigail, and she has planned the whole kidnapping thing just for fun. She says that she is going to kill each one of them since they have all tried to harm her father’s criminal business. So, basically, Abigail is more than a hundred years old. She is seeking revenge on behalf of her father, and now she is stuck inside a lift. Abigail manipulates Peter into opening the door, but before he can do it, Joey shoots at him. Frank stays to keep an eye on Abigail while Joey takes Peter for treatment.

Later, Abigail quite easily opens the gate and attacks Frank. In the meantime, Joey arrives, and she breaks one of the window shields that let the sunray enter the room. Just when Abigail is about to stab Frank, the sunray hits her hand, and her hand blasts off. She removes herself from the sunray while Frank and Joey run down to the library, where the sunray is coming from a particular window. The four of them place themselves inside that circle and plan for an escape.

Once they can get hold of that, Sammy can easily destroy it, which will result in removing the shields so that they can escape easily. Sammy and Peter go in one direction while Joey and Frank go in the other. Right at this moment, Sammy turns into a vampire and attacks Peter. She kills him on the spot and later attacks Joey and Frank as they run into the library room again. The sunlight has moved from the previous location now and they seek shelter under it.

Abigail is now in full control of Sammy’s body and can do anything she wants with her. Sammy takes the position to attack Joey and Frank regardless of the sunlight when Joey points a reflection toward her, which results in Sammy’s death. Her whole body explodes into pieces as later Joey and Frank discover a secret room.  Inside that room, they confront Lambert. How does Abigail Save Joey from Her Father?

Lambert makes a deal with Frank that he will make him a vampire. Together, they will put Abigail to death, and later, they can enjoy the taste of the whole empire. Frank agrees with him, and Lambert turns him into a vampire. However, right after Frank becomes a vampire, he kills Lambert because he had trusted him with this kidnapping thing, and he betrayed. Later, he is confronted by Abigail, but Abigail is too weak to fight him alone. Frank has gone completely mad as he wants to kill both Abigail and Joey now.

However, Abigail plans with Joey to put an end to Frank by fighting together. Their plan seems to be failing as Frank is too powerful for both of them. Frank has bitten Joey and thinks that she will do whatever he asks as she will turn into a vampire. But, to turn someone into a vampire, i.e., a follower, a vampire needs to make sure that the human drinks their blood as well. Only then there is a chance that the human will instantly turn into a vampire. The same process that Lambert follows while making Frank into a vampire.

But Frank, being very new to this world, does not know about how the vampire stuff works. So, when he orders Joey to stab Abigail, it does not work, and Joey attacks Frank. A failed attempt once again. However, this time, Abigail and Joey are more determined to kill Frank than ever. Finally, together, they stab Frank’s heart, and his whole body explodes. At the end of the film, we see Joey is confronted by Abigail’s father, Kristof Lazaar. Kristof seems to have taken an interest in killing Joey, as he is a vampire too.

But Abigail interferes as she says Joey has saved her life from Frank. Kristof tries to make Abigail realize that he would have gotten here before Frank could do any harm to her daughter. Nevertheless, seeing such determination in Abigail’s eyes, Kristof decides to let Joey go out of his love for her daughter. Kristof turned Abigail into a vampire long ago, and with time, he has only seen the monster within her. But, right at the climax, we realize the fatherly love still remains inside Kristof’s heart as he grants his daughter’s wish and lets Joey escape from the place without any harm.
