Throughout his career, Francis Ford Coppola has explored varied genres, from crime to romance. This time, the director will be helming a science-fiction drama, Megalopolis, and it would be interesting to see what he can bring to the table. Coppola started writing Megalopolis in the 1980s as a passion project. Actor Laurence Fishburne, who collaborated with Coppola for his 1979 film Apocalypse Now, earlier shared that Coppola was talking about the project as far back as when they were shooting Apocalypse Now.
Finally, after four decades, Coppola will be working on his dream project. The ensemble cast includes Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jason Schwartzman, Grace VanderWaal, Kathryn Hunter, Talia Shire, Dustin Hoffman, D. B. Sweeney, and Giancarlo Esposito.
The upcoming film follows the story of a New York City woman, Julia Cicero, who is divided between loyalties to her father, Frank, who has a classical view of society, and her architect lover, Caesar, who is more progressive and ready for the future. He wants to rebuild New York City as a utopia following a devastating disaster.
Adam Driver will portray Caesar, the lead character. Meanwhile, Nathalie Emmanuel will play his love interest, Julia Cicero.
During an interview with The Face, when Driver was asked about his upcoming film, he gave a subtle answer that described the complexity of Coppola’s film. He said that Megalopolis is undefinable, and any description won’t make sense unless one watches the film. He said, “It’s kind of undefinable, which feels very general until you watch the movie. Then my answer will be perfect. There’s not a lot of precedent for it, and it’s wild on a big scale, which is what’s really unique about it.”
When the actor was asked to shed some light on his character of Caesar, Driver compared his character to Coppola himself. He said, “He’s a visionary. He’s very much Francis [Ford Coppola], in a way, where he’s investigated every way people can do something and is trying not to get stuck on the right answer. That’s an idea that’s moving to me—and one that reflects Francis.”
Earlier, Coppola said while talking about Megalopolis that the movie is in the tradition of a Roman epic but set in a utopic version of New York City called New Rome. The film has also been described as “a love story that is also a philosophical investigation of the nature of man.”
Megalopolis started filming in November 2022 and finished in March 2023. It is reported that the film will be released in late 2024.
