There have likely been many women-centered films to date that chastise the patriarchal society. Such films are not just empowering, but they also offer a chance to think comprehensively about a male-dominated society. The topic of feminism was recently explored by the auteur Greta Gerwig with her 2023 film “Barbie.” The film was a blockbuster hit, breaking records. A cinematic gem like “Barbie” is undeniably complete in all senses. Now, fans eager for more of Gerwig’s masterpiece will be pleased to hear the good news. The filmmaker has recently announced that there can be a sequel to “Barbie” if she gets the right ideas to continue the make a follow-up.

Greta Gerwig opens up about the possibility of a sequel to Barbie 2

Recently, Gerta Gerwig was honored as one of Time Magazine’s Women of the Year. And according to Variety, during a conversation at the West Hollywood Edition, the filmmaker opened up about the possibility of helming a follow-up to Barbie. Gerwig says, “If I find the undertow, then we get it. If I don’t find an undertow, there’s no more.”

Though there is no certainty to the follow-up plan, Gerwig’s statement comes as a hope to witness the world of Mattel dolls once again. This isn’t the first time Gerwig was posed with the question of making “Barbie 2.” Previously, in July, Gerwig said during an interview that the sequel to Barbie is unlikely given how much she poured into the movie.

However, her recent statement offers a more optimistic outlook on a follow-up of the film. During the same conversation at the West Hollywood edition, Gerwig outlined her creative approach to Barbie and filmmaking in general. She said, “My North Star is ‘What do I deeply love? What do I really care about? Like, ‘What’s the story underneath this story?’ And I think with ‘Barbie,’ the story underneath this story was I loved Barbie. I remember going to Toys R Us and looking at Barbies, and I loved their hair. And I loved everything about them and my mom was not sure about it. And I find that’s the story, that’s the generational story…I’m always trying to find those undertows.”

Margot Robbie’s starring film is the highest-grossing movie in Warner Bros. history, making over $1.44 billion, and is also the biggest earner for a film based on a toy. Considering the critical and commercial success of the film, there is a high chance that a sequel to Barbie can happen.

Moreover, Robbie, who is also the film’s producer, revealed last summer that sequel discussions took place at Warner Bros. However, she later admitted that the chances of a follow-up are uncertain. Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz also suggested that the film could spawn multiple sequels and spinoffs. But he later retracted his comments regarding future Barbie projects.

Barbie has received eight Oscar nominations, two Golden Globes, and three Grammys, among other accolades, following its release.
