Constellation (Finale) Episode 8 “These Fragments I Have Shored Against My Ruin” Recap:
The penultimate episode of “Constellation” showed Alice (Rosie/Davina Coleman) speaking with her other self. Jo (Noomi Rapace) had to accept the loss of Alice she left behind. Meanwhile, Magnus (James DโArcy), who was told that his wife died, saw a silhouette that looked like her. It made him consider Aliceโs belief that Jo is alive. Now, in the series finale, we see Jo in a medical facility after she was found near the cabin. The nurse hands over Jo’s x-ray result to Irene (Barbara Sukowa) and says the image of her fetus is corrupted. Hours later, Jo wakes up, but the nurse keeps her locked inside the room.
The next day, Irene asks Jo to play the piano โ hoping she return to her past self. However, Jo keeps asking about ‘her Alice’. Irene does not want her to believe in these theories. She stresses how Jo needs to get her condition treated. However, due to her pregnancy, she cannot take the necessary pills. Then, for a brief moment, Jo sees the dead astronaut in Irene and calls her โValya.โ Irene recognizes that name but chooses not to react or respond. Meanwhile, Alice returns home with Magnus and speaks with him about Jo. She says Jo died after the collision, and the Jo they met isnโt her mother. Magnus thinks Alice believed whatever Jo told her because of her mental illness. Alice doesnโt agree.
What happens to Bud and Henry?
Bud and Henry swap places and start living lives as their alternate selves. So, Henry gets arrested for Paulโs (William Catlett) murder. He pleads for his life, claiming Bud killed Paul, not him. FBI Agent Lenora (Clare-Hope Ashitey) shows him the book that he/Bud wrote, but Henry says he hasnโt written it. He asks Ger to check the DNA evidence to verify that he and Bud are not the same. On the other hand, Bud receives the broken CAL machine but feels no connection to it the way Henry does. Irene calls Bud (Henry for her) and asks him to meet her.
What does Jo decide to do with her life?
Ilya (Henry David) comes to meet Jo at the hospital. He reveals that he is likely going to take over Ireneโs position because of her deteriorating health. Jo tries to explain what she is going through. But Ilya rejects her theories and calls them a result of the astronaut burnout. Jo claims that Irene is the dead cosmonaut whose body she saw in the space. He doesnโt believe her. But before leaving, he hands over the keys for her to leave. Finally, at night, Jo uses them to escape her room. Suddenly, she hears some distant screams. She walks in that direction and opens the window to that room. Behind bars, she sees two identical, older men acting erratically.
How do Magnus and Alice cope with the truth?
After seeing the two screaming men, Jo runs back to her room, scared and worried. She feels that she will face a similar fate if she doesnโt take the pills. Meanwhile, Magnus meets his therapist and admits to seeing Jo near the cabin. No matter which universe he is in, he wants to mend his relationship with his family. Alice and Wendy (Sadie Sweet) speak about their parents in both worlds. Wendy says she believes she saw her dad despite knowing he is dead. Alice believes Jo is dead. Their other selves feel differently about their parents, and they listen to each otherโs feelings without any judgment.
Eventually, Alice admits to Magnus that Jo is alive, unlike what she said before. Jo starts refreshing her piano skills, hoping to get back to her routine. Swedish-speaking Alice and Magnus vacate their house to move out. Before leaving, she tells him that there is another Alice whose mother is still alive. Magnus sees it as a healthy way for her to accept the reality. It seems like they all want to move on with the life they have instead of living with feelings of loss and regret.
Constellation (Finale) Episode 8 “These Fragments I Have Shored Against My Ruin” Ending Explained:
Does Henry get charged for Paulโs murder?
Bud meets Irene and talks about the accident during Apollo 18 and the evident differences between his understanding and Henry’s understanding. He says that he hasnโt been himself for years. Irene worries about his health and asks him to visit a hospital. He refuses to do so. Later, he meets Ian (Shaun Dingwall), whom he remembers pushing down the ocean. In this world, Ian is just a retired police officer and not someone who publicly criticized him. Meanwhile, Henry learns that Budโs DNA is identical to his. So, he gets charged for killing Paul and Ian.
What happens to Jo and Alice in the end?
After seeing the two men behind bars, Jo asks Irene about him. Irene says he is the first man in space but refuses to explain further. Jo keeps asking questions about their alternate selves. But Irene thinks she should do things that her body is familiar with rather than falling down the rabbit hole. She tries to make Jo understand that the increased knowledge will not help them because the changes cannot be undone. Eventually, Alice and Magnus come to meet Jo. Alice and Jo decide to move on with the things they have rather than worrying about what they donโt have.
Jo tells Magnus that Alice kept seeing the dead cosmonaut in her dreams, like the one who collided with her space station. It still doesnโt make sense for Magnus. He thinks Alice drew something after hearing what Jo saw. Finally, Jo agrees to continue taking pills to cope with her dissonance. Meanwhile, Irene decides to communicate with former astronauts, asking them whether they saw any such things. Later, she cryptically tells Alice that she is Valya. In the final shots of “Constellation,” we see injured Jo in space holding on to her photo with Alice.
