Daddio (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

“Daddio” opens at the JFK airport, and Girlie gets into a cab and does the usual things like checking her make-up and phone. When Girlie checks her phone, she has messages from a man called “L.” The cab driver, Clark, starts a casual conversation with Girlie, telling her that she is his last customer of the night and thus begins a game of who wins the game of personal stories. The conversation starts with Clark being annoyed with plastic money, because of which people don’t tip.

Continuing the conversation, Clark is happy to see Girlie not on her phone constantly and cares to have a pleasant conversation with Clark. After driving around people for years, Clark can read people. He tells Girlie that she is someone who can handle herself and is not a tourist in the city but is used to traveling around. In between the conversation, Girlie gets messages from L asking her to send nudes as he is horny. The text messages make Girlie uncomfortable. However, the discussion with Clark distracts her.

What does Clark learn about Girlie?

Curious in general, Clark asks Girlie about her hometown, Oklahoma, and learns that Girlie is a coder. This surprises Clark as he expects Girlie to be a wedding planner. The conversation gets philosophical as Girlie explains that she assigns one to true and zero to false, which is true to everything in life, and Clark quickly grasps the idea. Their journey slows as traffic is ahead, giving them more time to converse. Once again, Girlie checks her phone. L asks for Girlie’s nudes and sends a picture of his privates, showing he is hard and needs her nudes. Despite being uncomfortable, Girlie continues her conversation with L. Luckily, Clark distracts her once again.

Through the conversation, Clark learns that Girlie has a half-sister who is eleven years older than her. Growing up, she didn’t like her, but they still got along just fine. Despite losing touch, Girlie’s sister had reached out, and the trip was fun. Girlie’s sister’s girlfriend, Eagle, had joined them as well. Surprisingly, Girlie reveals that when she was a child, her sister used to tie her up and lock her in the bathroom as a way of preparing Girlie in case she ever got kidnapped.

What does Clark say that makes Girlie rethink her relationship with L?

As the conversation progresses, Clark realizes that Girlie is seeing someone and knows the man is married. After Girlie confirms, Clark tells Girlie that he was married twice and advises her never to say she loves him. However, seeing Girlie’s reaction, Clark realizes she has already said the ‘L’ word. As a man, Clark tells Girlie that a married man does not want to hear the ‘L’ word from the woman he is casually sleeping with, but Girlie begs to differ.

Furthermore, Clark reveals that his first wife was perfect. After she started to have self-esteem issues because of her weight, he slept with a 19-year-old. But things went downhill because she used the ‘L’ word. One cannot be smart and a pig in bed, and since Girlie is a smart girl, she cannot go down and dirty in bed.

However, Girlie says women cheat as well. Clark explains that the reasons are different, and the reason men go behind money and power is because of women who cheat as they choose men with money or power. Suddenly, Girlie rethinks about her attraction towards L as Clark explains the games men play, and Girlie has fallen victim to it.

What gets to Girlie is when Clark makes her realize that she has daddy issues. She never had a father be there for her when all her peers did. As an adult, she is looking for that father in her romantic relationships. The difference is that the child inside her needs a father. But the adult outside wants to sleep with the same man. Girlie also confirms Clark’s suspicions that Girlie calls L daddy.

At that moment, L texts Girlie. This time, Girlie initiates sexy texts. When L asks for nudes again, Girlie sends pictures that she had saved on her phone to him, satisfying L. The traffic starts to clear. Clark interrupts Girlie’s sexting and asks about Girlie’s sister and father. Remembering the old days, Girlie reveals that she had run away with her sister. Before leaving, her father shook hands with Girlie, and that was the first time he ever touched her. The conversation turns briefly light as they talk about their bucket lists.

Now, Girlie is curious about Clark’s marriage. He says he met his wife as he drove his ex-wife and her friends from a club, and they were drunk. That day, his ex-wife threw up in his car and left her bag in the cab. When Clark went to his ex-wife’s house the next day, they hooked up and eventually got married. The conversation is interrupted as L messages Girlie. Girlie asks L if her saying she loved him has ever bothered L.

L says that it took him by surprise but never bothered him. In the end, L says he loves Girlie, which gives her hope about the relationship. It is Girlie’s turn to reveal more information to Clark. Girlie says that two weeks ago when she left for Oklahoma, she was pregnant and hadn’t told anyone. During Girlie’s stay in Oklahoma, she started to bleed and eventually lost the baby. Moreover, Girlie had decided not to keep the baby, but the baby had given up on her. L did not know about the pregnancy.

Can a Chance Encounter Change the Course of Two Lives?

This revelation brings tears to Clark. They reach Girlie’s house. Furthermore, Girlie’s sister told Girlie that their father never gave her a handshake, but Girlie has a false memory of it. Outside, Clark gives his hand for a handshake, and Girlie is moved and thanks Clark for everything. Later, Girlie gives him a big tip for the ride. Eventually, Clark motivates Girlie and asks her to stay strong, as her life is not over.

The cabbie, Clark, is a smart man with enough life experience and can read people so well. Clark gives the perfect advice to Girlie about calling it quits with L because if the relationship progresses further, it will hurt Girlie terribly. However, the fact that L said he loved Girlie and had let her inside his world gave Girlie immense hope for something big in the relationship. Girlie finds it difficult to let go of the relationship even though, deep down, she knows Clark is right with everything he says. But her emotions and trauma overpower the logic. Clark and Girlie may never cross paths, but that interaction will stay with them forever.
